  1. Not so much worried about her second cycle as she is still very young, and a slow maturing bitch at that, however I'm more concerned about having her around dogs, and dog shows. Also there is a genuine concern for her health when everyone else with Rotties is having 6 month seasons (or atleast they appear to be).
  2. Thanks everyone. I'm kinda stoked she's not having a season at the mo, as my brother in law dropped his unneutered staffy (BYB) here in may while he looks for a house in Wellington where he is allowed his dog, and the effort in keeping them apart if she should come into season would do my head in! I've got her enetered in the 2012 Nationals over here in NZ, I've got my fingers crossed VERY tightly she doesn't decided to come into season then (6th October)!
  3. Wouldn't have a clue sorry Crisovar, I purchased her from Errol Tooth, as opposed to breeding her. I will contact Errol today and ask him. Thanks for the advice, as you can probably guess, Im very new to the whole showing/pedigree world (this is my first papered dog) and I've never had a litter/unneutered dog before.
  4. Hey there everyone. I am enquiring as my bitch has now gone nearly 9 months without a season, during this time she has ruptured her cruciates and had TTA's on both knees. People told me initially that she was stressed because of her cruciates and surgery, however as time has gone on people are starting to tell me there may be a problem and to ask my vet. The problem is, is that while my vet is pretty good, they seem to be the GP's pf the dog world in that they know a little about everything, but not a lot about more in depth topics (it took 5 visits and they still hadn't diagnosed her cruciate). Is this normal? Is this healthy? She seems to be otherwise in very good health, apart from going slightly insane being crate rested! She is only 18 months old, and had her first heat in very early december 2011 (her D.O.B. is 23rd of January 2011) The vet told me there doesn't seem to be anything wrong vaginally, and as I said before she seems to be in perfect health. Thank you for any responses.
  5. Gidday people. Just a quick note: I'm going to the Rotorua Show next weekend. I will be getting there as soon as the gates open on friday so will be getting a very good spot by the utility ring (ring 6). I am taking a 3X3 gazebo and tarp, however it is just me, and it seems almost rude to get a prime spot and not utilise it efficiently, so if anyone out there wants half my space send me a message and I'll make sure to save it for you! I'll be hanging about till best in show breeding on the sunday so no worries about early pack up etc.
  6. Excellent, thanks for that everyone. To those interested a Benefit show (atleast in NZ) tends to be run alongside Ch shows and the proceeds go to a charity etc.
  7. Well they're advertised as benefit shows? They're alongside 2 Championship shows, 2X CH Shows + Benefit show Champ Show Saturday am Stakes Saturday pm Champ Show Sunday am Benefit Show Sunday pm All being organised by the same people with the same judges in the same place, just wondered?
  8. Hey there everyone. Probably a naive question, but, I wondered if challenge certs are on offer at benefit shows? Kandy is entered in a few shows and benefit shows coming up and I'd love to see her walk away with her first challenge. She's just taken out 2nd for her group (okay so there was only 3!) in the south island rottweiler champ shows. I was ultra stoked with this as she is very much an all breeds dog rather than a specialty, there were 6 month puppies there that dwarfed her (shes 8 months)!
  9. To be honest, I've been to this back beach in Nelson. I was awe struck by it. No body has their dogs on a lead, nobody! I took my brother in laws AmStaff down to the beach while I was down there on holiday and every dog came up to us. Luckily Tank was a lovely boy and in no time I felt I could trust him off the lead aswell (no problems BTW). My Rotties have been mauled (for want of a better word) multiple times by jack russels/foxies. They seem to be really bad for it (not trying to get into breed specific stereotyping here, I do have rotties!). Lcukily I used to keep my big boy muzzled as he was shocking for dog aggression, but I tell you what, if that muzzle wasnt on it would have been carnage! I also had an incident very recently where I was walking my two girls, muzzled, leashed, and by my side down Raumati Beach, and a Shih Tzu came rushing up and started barking and nipping, all of a sudden I hear a great shreak from a fair way down the beach, maybe a hundred meters or so, "get away from those dangerous dogs!"????Im sorry...WHAT?!?!? Dangerous?!?!? Lady my dogs are on their best behaviour, your Shih Tzu on the other hand...And the Aweful thing is the council, atleast here in Paraparaumu, will always be on the side of the smaller dog. I really feel for this bloke, and his dog. What a sad story for everyone. I only hope the council doesnt order the destruction of his pooch!
  10. Yeap! Im sure you know the breeder, Dave Mackeown? Really really stoked to be getting a pup from him, certainly seems to be very passionate about Rotts, and ushc lovely lines!
  11. Absolutely Andisa! You're correct! Sorry for that. But you're right Crni Lotos lines are magnificent! And previously we have very Crni Lotos dogs in NZ, there were some from Moya Rott's (I believe) that were sired from frozen seemen from Niko Crni Lotos. Im ultra excited about bringing these lines over!
  12. Hey there everyone. Thought I'd jump in on this thread. Im mega excited. I've just put a deposit down on a pup thats not due until january. I know its a long wait but I'll get pick of the litter and Im extremely impressed with the lines (Corni Lotos) and the breeder seems like he's incredibly talented. Can't wait! I'm in the process of building run and kennel setups out the back of my property. Can't say who the dame (choice of three) will be just yet but it looks like the sire will be Felix Corni Lotos.
  13. Bjelkier: Thats no good to hear! Inevitablue: I think if I've learned anything from previous business deals with friends (flatmates, lending money to friends, etc) its that theres no such thing as mates in business! I cant say how well you know your breeder but maybe make sure EVERY little detail of the arrangement is nutted out first. Everyone here has said co ownership of studs is a risky business. Something to think about is that studs (atleast with Rotts) almost always have to be at home to mate properly. Something to think about, how are you going to feel when your breeder realises your stud wont mate at her house, and she starts bringing multiple bitches to your house for servicing. What about when the bitches dig your garden, cry all night, have a fight with your stud (that your friend then expects you to put in for the vet bills)? I think it could work really well, just make sure all the details are, as I said, nutted out. Aussielover: Its a standard clause written into contracts over in the US and UK, I think for the price my puppies will be selling for the sort of people who intend to treat the dog badly are far more likely to be looking at $400 (NZD) Rott's on trademe from BYB. I will be meeting all puppy buyers and checking them thoroughly. If the dog develops HD/ED as a result of not being fed properly then thats partly my fault anyway as I chose them as a viable candidate to purchase the pup. When I meet my buyers I will discuss everything, in detail. No taking the puppy for long walks, no matter how full of energy they have. No bite work training on any pup under a year. How much to feed. What to feed (Orijen BTW). All of my pups will leave my property with Ellenco Pet insurance. I will talk to them about house training. Training them to be gentle with children, cats, other dogs. Then aswell as all this I will send them home with a puppy pack that includes a big bag of Orijen LBP and a Puppy Book. I think I'll take everyone's warnings and just bring the bitch over. I will see how I cope with three dogs and when the initial bitch is getting close to a year I will concider whether I want to import a dog, if not I will import seemen when she's ready. Something that does puzzle me a bit. People over here use very young stud dogs. I've had big name breeders tell me that studs are ready to use "as soon as they're ready to go" however while I dont see it being physically damaging to a dog to mate young (like it would be to let a 14 month old bitch go to pup) I wonder how many health clearances can be met by such a young age. I would love to import a boy (if my circumstances allow for it) when the pup is 12 months, meaning that when the girl is ready to breed (24-36 months) the boy would be old enough to mate. I know that hip[ scoring under 18-24 months in NZ is frowned on, and what's worse is that, over here, once you get a score you cant reapply to have more scores done on the dog at a more reliable age. I also know that when I got Kandies penn hip scores the vet said there was no way I should be getting elbow scores before she is atleast 24 months. I would NEVER breed the dog unless he had all his clearances! Even if the bitch had excellent scores and the boy seemed all good,
  14. Also, I have mentioned CH titles alot here, however I would be attempting to get the puppy her working titles aswell. The puppy will be enlisted in obedience training too. I will be breeding for temperament in a big way!
  15. I am leaning towards that direction, I must admit, after reading everyones posts. I'm glad everyones not jumping on me and accusing me of being a BYB. I intend to do the very best I can, and am 100% willing to neuter/spay the dog/s if they turn out to be anything less than very healthy CH's. The litter is not due until January. I probably could have gotten a puppy sooner but I would rather wait for the "right" dog. Also I have to build the kennels and finish the runs. I have checked with the neighbours as to wether they would have an issue with me having multiple dogs, and they all say it's fine as my dogs NEVER bark and there hasnt been a single issue on the property ever. We have 5 foot fences all the way round, aswell as a double garage that is empty and never has cars in it. When we first moved in I went and introduced myself to all the neighbors and gave them our phone number, I told them that if my dogs ever bark or do anything that annoys them in any way, feel free to phone me and I will rectify the issue immediately. I have a good relationship with our local animal control, and they have also said they would be happy to issue me with a permit to own multiple dogs. I have done my research. Lots and lots of research. I am extremely impressed with the breeder over in Aus and am very impressed with his bloodlines. We are members of multiple dog clubs over here (working, obedience, Rottweiler etc). The only thing I am slightly hesitant of is getting home at 6 pm after leaving home at 4:15 in the morning, and having to go out and do two seperate walks (Im not small but even I know I couldnt handle multiple Rottweilers!). I will issue all my puppies with a typical contract: No breeding without my consent (I check health scores of potential mate). If the dog ever needs to be rehomed they talk to me first. If the dog develops hip displacia etc I will refund (wont replace puppy as I plan to only do one breeding per year, if that). Wont supply more than one puppy at a time, unless to an experienced breeder. I am importing from Aus because our lines in NZ are so few I'd like to bring in fresh lines, I also believe this will make my puppies more "salable" to fellow breeders/showers. Inevitablue: that is exactly the sort of arrangement I would be looking at. The co owners would own the dog for the most part, and if they wanted to show it...GREAT, if not I would show it. I would offer them the dog free of charge (obviously I'd be extremely picky about who would be offered this) on the condition I could bring my bitch around for servicing. Rallyvalley: I have my mums place for overflow dogs, however I would attempt to keep my numbers low (when Maddy passes she wont be replaced, leaving me with two bitches, as the new puppy reaches 5/6ish I would keep a pup from her last litter and hold off on breeding again until the puppy was 2 and had her CH title)
  16. Hey missmaddy. I am looking at importing from Aus to NZ as this requires no quarantine time. I really dont want puppies to have to spend time in quarantine, especially during a critical point of development. I am importing because both of the dogs come from brilliant lines, absolutely incredible lines. The parents, the grand parents, and the great grand parents all have their health checks and have passed with good marks. I have checked relatives (cousins etc) out on the US OFA site and they all have good results. Hence I hope that the pup's will arrive and go on to be good scoring dogs. The family is full of international champions. The mum is V Rated. The breeder strikes me as very reliable, professional. He told me to come over and spend a week with the dogs and really judge thoroughly which dog/bitch I would like. I have first pick of the litters. If...after all this...the pups have bad scores, I will be pissed off, no doubt, but I'll accept that I have very expensive pets. I have a few contacts in the Rott world, not many granted, but a few. I have not bothered asking around yet because I want to work out the details of what is a reasonable agreement first before I offend someone with a proposal.
  17. Hey there Oakway, you are entirely correct, I have not bred before. I am new to the game. I have done a bit of showing and am to some degree quite involved with the world of dogs (obedience, conformation training, I have a dog chiro, private trainer, hydro therapist). I have researched this fully and intend to do my very best. I understand the perils of BYB's and intend to make sure my dogs arte (a) titled (b) health clearenced ( hips, elbows, heart, eyes, dental) © rated well in specialty shows (d) of acceptable age (probably let the bitch go to pup on her second heat after she's two provided she's met all the relative requirements) and (e) I want the dogs to be something Im proud to breed, something I feel will do the Rottweiler breed a service. I will place puppies only in very carefuly chosen homes, and I will generally do everything I can to improve the Rottweiler breed. A little history on me: I currently own two bitches. My older girl is 5 now, I got her at 8 weeks old and she is a magnificent girl. She unfortunately doesnt have what it takes to go in ring (light eyes, to much of a doggy appearance, and apart from everything I had her spayed at 2 years old). Maddy is lovely dog, greatwith my son, and my wife, and a loving, calm, placid member of our family. She ruptured both cruciates at two and I had TTA's performed on both legs at Massey university, she has had arthritis since and attends hydrotherapy. I also feed her Orijen with a supplement that contains, among other things, glucosamine, condroiton, and omega 3 and 6. Maddy has done very well with obedience in the past however I knew from the time she was a year old she would not make a good show dog, therefore I spayed her and let her live as a pet. My younger girl is 8 months, her name is Kandy. I purchased Kandy with the intention of showing and possibly breeding her. However recently I had her Penn Hip scores done. They have come back looking rather bad. I have had limited success with her, so far she has been showing a very short time but 4 X puppy of breed. I intend to keep showing her and have her scores done again before she's two at which stage if they are still poor, I will spay her aswell. Kandy is fed Orijen LBP and also has the supplement that Maddy has. She attend conformation training on wednesdays at the NZKC, she also goes to obedience on tuesdays, once a week she sees a private trainer and she sees a chiro once a month. I have researched breeding and showing quite extensively and I believe that it could be appropriate for me as (a) I earn a reasonable amount of money (b) I work rather good hours, 4 days on 4 days off 12 hour shifts © I have a stay at home wife (d) we live on a reasonable amount of land in a semi rural setting. I understand the time and effort involved, I understand that making a profit is unlikely, I understand that during the birth stage I will need to take time off work. I have a large station wagon with a caged back, I have started building kennels and runs out the back of my property (runs are 5 meters long by 2 meters wide, kennels will be insulated and possibly have a panel heater inside), I have a large double garage that could easily have a whelping box inside with heat lamp etc. I do not intend to make a profit, I intend to breed beautiful Rottweiler puppies that can go on to make great ambassadors for the breed. I dont want huge rotties. I dont want "tough" rotties. I want rotties that have incredible temperaments, that can be housed with children, cats, other dogs, etc. Rotties that will go into the ring and do well. I know nobody likes a new breeder on the scene however I have researched this, and I am entering with the best intentions. As far as the co owner of the stud, we would come to some form of arrangement, i.e. we both use the stud to service our bitches (provided the other bitch has her health clearances). I would very much doubt I would ever reposess the dog unless I turned up and found the dog in unfavourable conditions (I think we all know what I mean, the term BYB comes to mind). I am starting to think importing semen might be the best option, however. Thankyou for all the responses, please dont jump on me assuming I will just be another BYB as I intend to do everything in my power to do this properly.
  18. Hey there people. I would have posted in the breeders forum but I'm too new. In March next year I am looking at importing two Rottweilers. A boy, and a girl, completely unrelated. I intend to use the boy, health clearances depending, as a stud later on to my bitch, also health clearances depending. They come from magnificent lines and I'm really excited about importing these lines to NZ. However I will only have the facilities two cater to the girl (already have two other dogs) and so am wondering about the boy. I can either pass on him and just bring the girl back, or I can find a co owner over here in NZ to house and care for him. I dont know how to go about this, especially as I feel the deal I want to offer is probably ridiculously unreasonable: I'll pay for the dog, I'll import him, I'll pay for his medical insurance, and in return I expect the co owner not to breed from him without my strict permission, I expect to use him for shows, I expect the co owner to allow my bitch/es on site for servicing. I also want to write into the contract that if at any point I feel the dog is not being cared for to the highest expectations, I can remove him. All of this seems like a bit of an unreasonable deal to me? What are your thoughts? How would you approach this situation?

    Rottweiler

Hey there. I know very little about dog nutrition but I do know that Hill is grain based and the second ingredient is a meat by-product (not good). Take a look at this site http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com I dont know about NSW but I know in NZ I feed Orijen. 4 of its first 5 ingredients are meat. They use high quality meat and ingredients. I hate to sound like a salesman, and believe me Im not, but I've had brilliant results with Orijen and my girls coats are shinier than ever. Also my older girl, who has arthritis in both back legs, is walking much better now (due to the glucosamine and crondroiton in Orijen) and pain free, for the most part. Take a look at Rottweiler forums and you will soon see that most people really dont agree with foods that have grain in them. I hate to sound like a salesman, really! But While Orijen is deer it is similarly priced to Hills and if you're going to pay for the best there is much better products out the than Hills, and Eukanuba, that the vets push HEAVILY!!
  20. Hey there everyone. Spoke to a Chiro this morning. Kandy is booked in for tomorrow! On a side note. I was told (unsure of truth behind rumour) that the winner of best in show at the 11 nat's was a staffy that was written off as "ugly" throughout his younger life. After seeing a chiro they clicked his back/legs and he is now the champ for all of NZ!!! This is the chiro we're booked in with http://www.ceatnz.com/about/01-fenella.html finding a chiro in NZ was a PITA! I tried ringing Massey university (vet training uni) I tried ringing the NZ Veterinarian Association, I checked the yellow pages, google, everywhere. What made it even worse is there's a place in palmy called Animal Chiropractic that doesnt do animals!?!?!? Anyway, yes Kandy is booked, thank you everyone for your help, lets hope this does the trick!
  21. Hello everyone thank you very much for your advice. It is truly appreciated! I approached our conformation trainer the other night to see if he could do private lessons but he is too busy at the moment. He also said that there wasn't anything wrong with her back however I may run her by the vet on monday when Im off work. Becks, I think you are bang on the money. Unfortunately poor Kandy doesnt seem to enjoy it at all and sometimes starts shaking like shes scared, I have no idea why? I only do very small sessions at a time (3 minutes 2-3 times a day) I also think that it might be best to do it after I've finished walking her so she's perhaps slightly more relaxed. Also to everyone that mentioned the slippery floor, the same thing was told to me over at the Rott forums. Thing is that she does her best stacking, ironically, at the NZKC show buildings (when we do our conformation training) and the floors there are smooth concrete. I truly hope this little bizarre twist continues when we go to the same building for shows! To the people who encourage giving her a treat, my issue is that as soon as I reach for the treat she breaks the stand/stack and everything Ive ever been told by trainers is that you need to reward instantly or atleast before they break the command (i.e. sitting down, breaking the stack). I learned one thing that was VERY helpful at training last night. The trainer told me (and it worked) the best thing to do with a pup is to lift them around the genital area so you'r placing both legs at once rather than having to set each leg individually (giving her a chance to move the other leg). I still didnt get her so that her hock was perpendicular to the ground, but it was close! I think she is capable of having her legs positioned correctly because she was pulling on her lead to sniff another dog last night and I saw her legs facing straight down (the right way for a stack!). Thankyou very much for all the help it is brilliant! Kandy will be booked into the vet first thing monday.
  22. Also forgot to mention, she starts her showing on the 6th and 7th of august with the Upper Hutt Kennel association show, and the Pencarrow Kennel association show. Both are double championship shows.
  23. Hello everyone. My names Rob, and I have two gorgeous Rottweilers. Older one, Maddy is 4 younger one, Kandy is 5 months. Anyway on with my question. I did A LOT of research before purchasing Kandy. I checked hip scores, show success, breeders reputation etc. I decided on Kandy (don't know if Im aloud to list breeder?) but her dad is NZ GR CH and her mum although not a CH has both parents NZ CH's. She is a very healthy lively young pup. My issue is that she wont stack. I don't know if it hurts her when I pull her legs back too far, or if shes not stable, or if shes just a stubborn pup? I attend conformation training each Wednesday at the NZKC (porirua) and she seems to show promise. But the not stacking thing is just plain painful. Does anyone have any tips or know of someone who does private conformation training? I imagine I need more training than the dog! I have included photo's of her and a couple of us doing our best to stack, as you can see her back legs are no where near far enough back to be considered stacked. That's the best we can do. I appologise for the photo's, I have been told on another forum that the photos should be taken straight on of the dog and in future I will do so.
