  1. Susan Garrett in her puppy peaks sessions addresses puppy food aggression. In the video she hand fed the pup then progressed to putting her hand in the bowl while feeding and then eventually progressed to giving puppy a bone and then rewarded it with a high(er) value treat before puppy gave her the bone back. Then she gave the bone back to puppy. She made explicit mention to give the treat first as an exchange. She progressed to eventually taking the bone & giving the higher value treat with no issues. hope this helps.
  2. last weekend on a rare trip into Big W. We were picking up some puppy treats & toys in anticipation of Wilbur's arrival (Friday). The checkout girl asked if we had a puppy and we said "no". she gave us a weird look and must have thought we were fruitcakes as we didn't offer any further explanation then she made another comment about us having a puppy and i put her out of her misery and said the puppy hasn't arrived yet :D
  3. it sounds like you've got the situation well under control; kudos to you Having access to a child psychologist to help children to manage their emotions is something that you've already acknowledged as important Your son obviously has the support and framework to develop the skills he'll need throughout his life to manage some of the complex emotions he may experience. Sadly, some children experience and are exposed to some very complex situations and they need help in being able to develop the skills to manage. For some kids childhood is more of a challenge than we acknowledge or are aware of; for a variety of reasons. Losing any significant relationship (including pet ownership) is hard for adults never mind children who often have less skills to cope throughout the trauma and chaos. My sympathy and thoughts are with you as you navigate through the awful part of pet ownership; saying goodbye.
  4. okay, we need rulez on this thread....no teasing about new puppies without pics Congrats; can't wait to see pics of your new girl. *Four sleeps till Wilbur comes home
  5. Crate training is entirely one's own choice but it's very helpful in house training and keeping puppy safe when left home alone. But in saying that if you do choose to crate, you need to know how to crate train; it's simply not putting pup in and hoping he'll take to it. owners have to build value for the crate so puppy LOVES being in the crate. It isn't for putting puppy in for long periods of time. Just in case you're not aware (and i'd never presume anything), crate training is different to merely using a crate for transportation. Using a doggy harness is fine in the back seat, but you'll need differing sizes as puppy grows. It may prove a challenge if you have a 'chewer'. if you do a search in DOL regarding dogs travelling in cars, you'll find some great threads with a number of differing choices and opinions regarding safety etc You may find puppy gets a little confused with learning to evacuation on paper when you're out and then evacuate outside when you're home. It usually takes longer for toilet training due to the confusion, but it's not an impossible feat. Patience and clear signals is the key to success. having a puppy and raising it is a wonderful experience; enjoy
  6. Awwww good gawd he's a cutie! My input: keep puppy calm and don't invite visitors around until he's settled into the family. Take him straight home and out to the back yard to evacuate. Then give him a drink and some dinner as he'll have been food restricted that day. Once he's eaten, be aware he'll be wanting to evacuate soon after, so make sure he's in the area where you want him to evacuate. Don't change his diet from what he's used to at the breeders (at least til he's settled). Organise a vet check within the first week. Seek out puppy classes asap. Make sure he's restrained in the car on the way back to your house from the airport. If you have purchased his travel crate i'd not open the door and let him out at the airport simply because he may get stressed being put back into it for the drive home. I know you'll be dying for some puppy love but i would resist so as to keep puppy's stress levels as low as possible. Have bedding, softie's and other toys ready for him when he arrives and introduce his bed to him. Are you crate training your puppy? What have you considered re toilet training? outside/inside evacuation? have you considered the house rules, methods of training, who will be primary care giver etc so much to think about and lots to learn about with a new fur baby in the house enjoy.
  7. Rest assured that Stevie will get lots of extra kisses and cuddles from the vet staff hope the big day goes well :D
  8. geez you peeps are quick dvd already gone to a new home.
  9. Casper our, recently pts, 14yr old lab had an allergic reaction to rice his entire life. He had it prior to desexing and after. He would get the most horrendous diarrhea a few hours after eating it He was fine with everything else.
  10. somehow i have ordered and received two copies of this dvd I've placed an ad in the 'for sale' section of the classifieds in DOL. Check it out if you're interested.
  11. What time is pickup for your puppy? Our plane eta is at 3:30 pm & pick up from Toll Freight is 4:00pm...i'll be there at around 3:00 pm
  12. I feel for you! it's thus far, been an 8 week wait for us...5 sleeps to go. The only time it flew was during our two week holiday...the rest of the time has dragged by. I hope your time left is speedier than ours has been.
  13. i forgot to add, that Susan Garrett's crate draining dvd "Crate Games" is a wonderful resource if you want your puppy to love their crate. The dvd teaches you to create value for the crate. Worth every cent. Work hard at creating a wonderful relationship between you and the pup; you can do it...even as a part time single puppy parent
  14. New pics of Wilbur & his sisters: Torrential rain = water. Water + labs= FUN 5 sleeps till Wilbur comes home. The puppy/child gates are up, 1st vet check appointment is booked, puppy classes booked, food in freezer...*sigh*
  15. have you considered a smaller travel crate that can be situated beside your bed? Then when pup is settled into the family you can graduate him to his larger crate. I'm with Rileys mum on moving puppy in with you at night. They're only babies and we often have way too high expectations of what they can do successfully. good luck.
