  1. for the first night or so i set my alarm to make sure a pup evacuates so we only experience success but that doesn't mean between those breaks that pups won't stir and want to go out. This happened early this morning. Took her out for a 4:20 am wee. reset alarm for 6am but she stirred and whined a bit just after 5 so i took her out & she did a poop. she wouldnt resettle so at 6 i took her out for breakfast. after food she did another poop and then had a wee. she settled quickly. now that i know her morning internal timer is set for around 6 am i'll extend that a little each morning so i can change the feed time for a little later.
  2. we are ALL pooped! Here's our new girl Laiken in the car. At home in the back yard with Miss21 and norty brown dawg Wilbur. and before she left our breeder's this morning - this is her and norty brown dawg's furmum, Carlotta It's been a really full-on day. After we picked her up we went home for a small feed, a drink, wee etc and then off to the vet for a health check. The vet was really happy with her: no fleas, clean ears, right temp, clear eyes, good hip movement, clear heartbeat and alert and interactive right after a flight. We've been doing small incremental introductions with norty brown dawg Wilbur and they've all been positive; Later in the afternoon i took the lead off him and he recalled each and everytime :) At this point in time he's either very unsure of her (she comes with sharp needle teeth that hurt) or a little excited or focussed on me. We'll just keep up these introductions short and sweet and often. She's been a bit whiney and howly which is totally expected after leaving the litter and flying across the country. Our routine this evening has been to eat a little, go out for a toilet break and then a little play and then back in the crate for another snooze. She'll be crated beside my bed tonight and have hourly to 1.5 hourly toilet breaks.
  3. last sleep as a one dog home; picking up Laiken at the airport at 1:30pm. Then home for a leg stretch, wee/poop business, a drink and a small spot of dinner and then off to the vet for a check. We might have a very small intro with norty brown dawg Wilbur before she goes to the vet - we'll see how energetic she is. I'm not stupid enough to think that butter wouldn't melt in that mouth...i am a seasoned labby owner
  4. rubbish! you've got a gorgeous face...and i don't give out gratuitous praise about looks very often.
  5. Norty brown dawg is three and he still mouths his stuffies just before he falls asleep; Ronin looks quite delicate about it...not so norty brown dawg who likes to shove a whole lot of stuffy in his gob
  6. Roova I was looking for one of those second hand in Adelaide; just wasn't to be. I ended up paying the same as you including postage for one of these I can't tell you how embarrassed i will be using this I've been getting norty brown dawg used to waking next to me with it; he's doing really well.
  7. i bought one of these today after reading your comment. The wrapping says not a chew toy and only to use under supervision - this works fine for me as it's for an 8 week old lab pup who will be supervised; i like the quality of it; thanks for sharing your thoughts.
  8. Pom Breeders in Perth are rare unlike east coast. Can we buy the puppy from east coast and ship it to Perth? Does this allowed to buy puppy from other state and ship to another state? Yes - a lot of people do this - my last pup was from Brisbane and I am in Perth :) Would you mind advise me the procedure to do that? The breeder will organise with you as they do it all the time, don't stress about that part. Yesterday, I paid for a pup to be transported from Melbourne to Adelaide next Friday; $107 including crate hire (pp40) and i opted to spend and extra $30 for a travel liner that wiks the urine away if puppy urinates in the crate. The breeder organised it as they get special breeder rates. This is the second time i've done this through Jet Pets in the past three years. Last time i opted to purchase the crate and it was about $50 more along with the wiki liner. The breeder organises it, I then contact Jetpets with the quote number that my breeder gives me, pay via credit card on the phone and then the breeder and i are both emailed the paperwork of payment etc. easy peasy! edited to add: buy in haste and repent at leisure...was standing in line in a pet store recently (doesn't sell live animals) behind a family group with a small dog of 16 weeks. They had purchased it a few months before at a well known pet store in Adelaide city; the family were telling the checkout girl the health issues the dog had from the moment they got it home; it's been at the vets for weeks and weeks; was under weight and had numerous other issues. They had spent a fortune in vet fees and the dog was only 4 months old When you buy from petstores you are perpetuating the supply and demand of puppies...those puppies DO NOT come from ethical registered breeders; they come from puppy farms and back yard breeders who have no concern for the welfare of the dogs that they use as breeding stock nor the puppies that are produced. Take your time, fine a good quality registered dog from an ethical breeder; your bank balance will thank you!
  9. if you're going to crate train and have no prior experience then getting ahold of a copy of Susan Garrett's dvd Crate Games is something you won't ever regret purchasing (if you haven't already got a copy). I bought a copy just before i bought my first crate nearly 4 years ago and it's been invaluable in teaching puppy to toilet train, keeping puppy contained in the house when necessary and for a content place to sleep in. I have (labby) puppy sleep in a PP40 crate beside my bed (at bed height) initially to reduce any anxiety in the puppy and then over time the crate gets moved to the lounge room. This allows me to awaken easily when puppy stirs alerting me to toilet it (i also set my alarm every 1.5 hours initially and if there are no accidents i add more time incrementally). Eventually when puppy has earned freedom in the house after proving it won't eliminate or destroy stuff in the house and stay beside my bed at night, they get sleep in a bed beside my bed and the crate is move outdoors and used for when visitors come etc i still play 'yer in, yer out' every now and again to keep him willingly entering and exiting the crate. I'll be starting the routine all over again next week!
  10. if you want a comprehensive list of reading do a DOL search for things that DOLer 'yellowgirl' has posted using search terms like 'BARF" "Prey model" or just search for yellowgirl's profile and then click on "my content" ; she created a wet mix for her then petfood business which she eventually sold to another DOLer. If you want to speak directly with the current owner you can speak to her via fb at Adelaide Dog. Karina is very knowledgeable and always happy to help anyone who is interested in the advantages of feeding raw. Karina and yellowgirl before her have fed my boy for the past 3 years and i've just ordered ready for when the new pup arrives next week. I mostly use a BARF type model of feeding and sometimes i add Prey model stuffed with roo meat. here's yellowgirl's content on DOL
  11. jOeyyBRUH, ; the comment about not needing to freeze anything is because some puppies gulp their meaty bone component of a raw diet and freezing them slows the eating process down; WW was saying that an 8 week old Stafford puppy will be fine eating the meaty bones like chicken wings, necks and chicken carcasses raw so it's not necessary to freeze them. Raw food is fine to defrost and refreeze once. From what i understand (and follow) it's fine to purchase frozen raw wet mix, defrost and then refreeze. My raw wet mix comes in 1kg tubs that are frozen and when i get the tubs home, i defrost, divide the mix into appropriate meal sizes for my dog and store it flat in zip lock baggies and then refreeze. If you are buying frozen bulk meat to make up your own wet mix, it's fine to defrost it and then freeze it again - but don't defrost and then freeze it a third time. hope this helps.
  12. good lord i love clicker/market training - reading Karen Pryor's book was the beginning of a love affair (one sided of course ) Karen on her website, clickertraining.com also offers web streamed videos about learning to use CT. I bought access to two about 3 years ago and i still have access to them until 2016.
  13. Wilbur likes me to stick my finger in his ear and gently massage it in circles and then he likes to lick my finger - i don't mind doing it as he enjoys it but i make sure to wash my hands thoroughly afterwards
  14. surely you know the rules TTJ??? Photos are required :-P
  15. I had a two year old male labby in the house until i had him desexed - never had any issues with marking/cocking leg inside - the outdoor bbq cover is a whole 'nuther issue
  16. I'm a little wary of the MFT club after a friend of mine bought a pup through a member (that was recommended by the club) about 18 months ago. Pup arrived with fleas and worms.
  17. I wonder if you could share the secret of no destruction. Horrible Herbert added a new trophy earlier. A brand new just delivered DVD.... Daddy left it on the shelf. The Horrible One retrieved it and ate it all up. Majority of the time everything is secured. But the times things are not are his best scores. You poor bugger; Horrible Herbert really has you on the hop! After reading this i realised just how lucky I am...norty brown dawg has rarely (if ever) eaten anything in the house (he liked my plant pots outside though). I think it's because in the house i had the opportunity to redirect him with a chew-appropriate toy and he took to that really well. He'll steal shoes, socks, undies etc but it's only to incite play. He has full run of the house except mis21's bedroom.
  18. for you VM I thankfully didn't have to wait too long for a season/mating/litter. We knew that we'd be ready for a second one by the time nawty brown dawg was about 2 or 3 but we weren't waiting as such. When our breeder let me know that his furmum was in whelp with her final litter after they did the ultrasound, I decided there and then that we'd go with this litter. The only uncertainty was hoping there was a bitch in the litter and if so, that we'd get it. Brown Dawg was the only boy in his litter and we wanted a boy and we were lucky to get it since there were others ahead of us on the list wanting a boy. Luck was on our side with 5 bitches
  19. https://vimeo.com/106571348 Laiken in the pink collar being confident; she & her litter mates had their 6 week vet check & vaccinations today - all good :D
  20. Sweet Jeebus i need a copy for the back neighbours who got a puppy last week...all week it's been left alone to bark in the back yard and then today the owners were home; yelling at the pup to shut up...of course when it was quiet, it got ignored Top stuff
  21. great news; you've got a relationship developing already! IMO breeders who want their pups to go to the best homes will engage with prospective buyers - even before a litter is planned. Just as much as we want their pups, they want the best homes for their pups. It's a two way street. When i was looking for a puppy nearly four years ago, i made the decision that one of the criteria that had to be met was that the breeder would engage with me and be prepared to develop a relationship. Developing a relationship has advantages for both parties; breeders get a life-long advocate of their breeding methods/ethics who will be like a walking advertisement for not only their breed but their particular line. And buyers often get preference - This time round, i wanted a bitch from Norty Brown Dawg's furmum (her final litter before retirement) and i got what i wanted. There was another litter born 10 days later from his half sister, but despite having to wait 2 weeks for landlord approval, Ruth tried her best to make sure I got what i wanted. Breeders generally don't like to put people on a list when they're 'prospective' or 'tentative' buyers but Ruth was happy to do that for me while i waited for landlord approval to have two dogs on the property. A good relationship with a breeder is very valuable in my opinion. Good to hear she's receptive - now all you have to do is build upon that. Perhaps an email in a week or two regarding some interesting points in the article she sent - it sounds like you've found the right fit with breeders
  22. So glad you knew what i meant VM If she's anything like Wilbur (they're 1/2 sibs with a different sire) we'll end up with a delightful dog full of personality and a face that steals the show wherever we go. Two weeks to go.
  23. i think Laiken is the pup on the right with the bright dark pink collar
