  1. Funny you say that heidly - she is the Cheekiest of the lot!!
  2. Hi All, Here are my babies, - 5 weeks old now, well actually 5.5 weeks old. They are all so gorgeous and full of energy and personality. I want to keep them all! Still haven't picked 'the one' - D-day is this weekend. It's so hard.... Puppy 1 Puppy 2 Puppy 3 Puppy 4 (the boy) Puppy 5 Puppy 6 Puppy 7 Typical GSP - Upsidedown! Mum and bubs - An increasingly rare moment!
  3. The funny thing is she's never once indicated it was painful when I was touching it and checking it out - maybe once it burst it stopped being so painful?
  4. Yes we went off to the vet this morning - that was always the plan - it literally developed in a matter of hours - so damn quick! I wasn't sure if I needed to send her in last night or not, that was my issue, but we took her in first thing this morning. I checked on her a number of times overnight and she had no temps and was her usual self, still is, playing and running around and no temps. She has some antibiotics and another drug to start reducing her milk production (she's producing far more than the pups are eating hence the problem!) The vet said he wasn't overly worried about her and the antibiotics will clear it up. She's basically completely uninterested in feeding the pups, has been getting quite growly with them in the last two days and yesterday she basically told them all to rack off. If she decides to let them feed - standing up - it's usually only for a minute or two then she runs off. Short of sitting on her and forcibly holding her down she doesn't tolerate them feeding off her at all. They are well and truly eating lots of solids now so i'm not worried about them. Will keep an eye on it but i'm not so worried now our vet has had a look. She's had enough of the pups at the moment, is happy to keep an eye on them (from a distance) and will bark at anything that she's worried about but really isn't interested in sleeping with them or being with them much at all now. They are getting so big and rough and have found a good game is to see how many pups can hang off mum's ear, lip, nose - you name it really. Can't really blame her for having enough and they aren't at all worried about her not hanging around, they do their own thing and are happy enough with each other.
  5. Here's a picture of it. Doesn't seem to be oozing anything at the moment.
  6. Yeah i'll go out put her in to let her feed and try and keep them off it (isn't that going to be fun, they are so full on when they're getting a feed) I just cannot believe how quickly this has happened!
  7. Temp is 38 and she is just chilling out on the couch at the moment, seems to like the compresses. Any recommendations for keeping it clean overnight, pups are going to want to try and feed off her, should I keep her separated tonight or let them feed? definately taking her to vets in the morning.
  8. Brought Mia in tonight for some time away from the pups (they are almost 5 weeks old now and she's only feeding a few times a day and wants time out) She has laid up on the couch and rolled over and I noticed there is what looks like a burst mastitis on one of her teats and a hard lump on another (I had only been feeling her teats mid morning and all was well). It basically looks like a hole which has small amounts of haemoserous fluid seeping out and what looks like possibly pus higher up in it. What do I do? I've used hot towels on her teats at the moment but am not sure what to do now? Can I wait until morning to take her to the vet. She is her normal self, eating, running around and playing and otherwise seems fine but i've heard nasty stories about mastitis and given my lack of experience am just a bit worried about what I should do now? Thanks in advance for your advice!
  9. GSPs seem to vary greatly, you can get a main register pup for $500 or I think when I was looking for my first one I was quoted $2500 from one place, i'm sure you'll find more expensive ones too, but pet pups vary between $500 (lowest i've heard of anyway) to $1500 plus - go figure. Mine are $950 show or pet. I have based this on what I consider to be reasonable and what I have discussed with other breeders too.
  10. Underfoot how do you introduce paper to toilet on? Just interested because I'm about to move mine ouside in the shed For night time too and am wondering how to set it all up.
  11. Don't worry allerzeit, my Mia wasn't too interested in staying in with her pups either. I stressed about it for a while but pups were doing fine and are now very independent pups and are really healthy and well grown. I'm thinking it's better than a really overprotective bitch that won't let us near the pups. Mia looks after them when needed but is more than happy to let us have a bit of time with them, just don't let her hear next doors dogs or she puts on her cranky mum face!!
  12. Hmmm Mia is very quickly getting to the point where we are having to make her get in there to feed them at times, I can't blame her either - there are a LOT of little pointy teeth around and I don't think it will be long before she decides enough is enough, thankfully they are getting the hang of eating their solids! That day under the tree she voluntarily fed them which I was slightly suprised about! I'm actually not sure how much she still gets in with them overnight. We constructed our outdoor puppy day pen today (good old bunnings compost panels) and from tomorrow they will be spending more time outside during the day, they like it out there and just get into the kennel when they want a sleep. At this point we're still going to bring them in at night but as soon as they start escaping from the whelping box then out to the shed we go! Yours are so gorgeous aren't they alyosha - love the shot of them all trying to eat - you don't need a bigger bowl - you need a TROUGH!
  13. Hi Guys, Awwwww those Cavs are too cute - lovely little girl! Here are some of my babies - we've had LOTS of really good puppy enquiries lately, none of this "I only want that one" so i'm really happy that i've got great homes for them all! Still struggling to choose between two that I really like, will just hang in there and see how they mature over the next few weeks but each time I think i'm leaning towards one the other steps up the cuteness and starts to win me back! Whispering in mum's ear Our first pointer! Trying to teethe on mum's nose! Exploring! Kisses Lots of noise at playtime! Cheeky pups! Fun outside
  14. Mia's babies are 3.5 weeks old now and are just so gorgeous, they are starting to run around a bit and play rough. There are two that I am far too attached to and just want to know which one is mine NOW!! NOW DAMMIT NOW!!! Maybe I could just keep both.....OH not happy about that idea! Mia's milk is starting to go a bit overboard and she doens't always feed both sides so she gets up and there is milk everywhere! Trying to encourage her to at least roll over a bit so they can get in and have some 'left overs'. Alyosha - so damn cute aren't they!!!
  15. I was looking at signing up for the breeder program for my pups. Can anyone tell me about it, do you have any costs or obligations or anythign else I need to be aware of?
  16. So sorry to hear about the losses guys :-( Talking about all those pooing puppies i'm a bit worried about the fact that mine dont' seem to make that much mess. I'm starting to wonder if Mia only cleans up when i'm not around or if what is in the whelping box is all they do? Mine don't seem to be hard to clean up at all....They are all thriving, putting on weight, playing and seem healthy but hearing about yours all making so much mess i'm wondering if mine are ok? Like i said, otherwise they seem just fine and I think they're doing well but...... Anyhow, the first escapee from the whelping box has made her break tonight so the other half of the door has gone in. Our little liver girl (and she is one of the littlest) practically jumped out - luckily enough I was there to catch her and put her back in. She sure is a pocket rocket, she's running around the box and trying to pounce and spin around and keeps jumping all over her sisters and brother. Once the rest saw her do it they were all at the door and trying to get out, glad I was there to see that or we could have had puppies everywhere!!
  17. Marinapoint - Such an ordeal, I was wondering how you were going after you disappeared and I had my fingers crossed you were OK. Sorry for the little ones you lost, it's always sad but it looks like you have a good spread of colour across the lovely little ones you have now. Would love to see some piccies! For those still awaiting litters - I have my fingers crossed that they will still be July babies and they'll arrive soon - safe and well. Mine are coming along in leaps and bounds. Tomorrow 3 weeks and is the day we start our first solids. I don't think poor Mia will be able to keep up for much longer, she produces great amounts of milk but she's very tired and it's taking a bit out of her. We're making sure she's having plenty of good quality food to eat and getting lots of rest but we don't want her to run down any more. So along with the food comes a sticky mess and plenty of cleaning up! We're starting them on Dr Bruce's vets all natural muesli with some mince mixed in so we'll see how we go! Alyosha - such a big brood - it must be a releif to have them all in with mum now. I'm very glad that i've been able to keep all mine in together with mum the whole time, it's been exhausting enough without the added work! They are all gorgeous!!
  18. :-( BB very sorry for the little ones you lost, it's just not fair is it.
  19. They already have an enclosure over their whelping box inside so it will be the same in the shed. As for heat lamps - also dangerous, especially with big dogs who think cords are toys!! Our hot water bottles go under the bedding which is secured so they cant get at them. Rebanne I'm Glad to hear yours are doing ok outside in the cold. Mine is a similar setup but inside the shed so fingers crossed it will work!!
  20. Yes i'm worrying about the permanent move outside but with pups this big it has to happen or we will have chaos inside! Being in Toowoomba we get some very cold nights eg. -2 last night :-( So i'm worried about moving them outside and them getting too cold. We have a big closed in shed, the whelping box will be off the ground, made windproof with cover and they will have hot water bottles and (hopefully fingers crossed) mum in there with them. I'll still be worried but as they're only 3 weeks old we can hold off that for a while
  21. Fair enough, that would be hard, it is never easy and I know exactly what you mean about being overly sensitive when it comes to our babies!
  22. Have had a search but can't find any other topics about this. As you all know I have GSP's so we're talking big dogs here. Mine are 3 weeks old on Sunday and we've been having some really lovely weather here at the moment so i'm wondering when you all take your babies out for a bit of a play on the grass? We have our own fully fenced yard on a really large property and they would be supervised the whole time. Just wondering when everyone else takes theirs out?
  23. Sounds like you need to find a vet you trust more, I had to change vets to get this but the one I have now I trust implicitly - he explains everything so I know exactly where we are and why were doing things. The drugs make sense to me - if it's caused by inflammation then you need to get rid of it in order to get rid of the problem hence the drugs but I'm certainly no expert so I'd suggest you talk to your vet and get them to explain it to you so you at least have the full story to make a decision you're happy with.
  24. Loving the bubbas allerzeit!! They are adorable - you've done well!! Mine are progressing by the day - they are playing and biting at each other today and one is trying to run and then spin around (hilarious to watch because she can't quite figure out why it's not working!!) I keep getting this look from her when she falls over and it's quite cute. Also loving the fact that they are moving away from where they sleep to poo but they have no objection to peeing on their siblings!! Can't wait to see the Pointer pups and am hoping that all went well and they've had a rest! SBT - this is why i didn't do temps, tried it with horses once and I drove myself mad!! Mia didnt do much to indicate she was going to whelp but I still knew when something was up when she wouldn't let me go to bed one night and sure enough from about 4:30am she got really restless and wanted out thank you very much (wasn't interested in the whelping box thanks very much!!) bag at 5:30 and pup at 6!! Bottom line is - you know your girl - you'll know when it's going to happen!!
  25. Allerzeit - being Mia's first litter I was a little worried about this happening, our 'bible' The Whelping and Rearing of puppies by Muriel P Lee says that if the mum fails to accept the pups to put them with her to nurse 5-6 times a day, it says you will probably have to hold her head and hold her in place. You're supposed ot show her the pup (bottom first!) before you put them on and let her sniff it. It also suggests to squeeze some milk from her nipple onto the pup to see if she licks it or some liver. Apparently some take 3-4 days to come around. (in the mean time you've gone completely mad and are wondering why on earth you wanted to do this in the first place!) It says if you put the pups on her every three to four hours during the day then you can go 6 hours at night. I have no personal experience but this is just what it says in the book - maybe it's helpful? Hopefully someone who has had this problem before might be able to help you out. Congrats on the litter by the way!!! Hope to see some piccies when everything is going the way it should. I remember our first 24hrs - It wasn't easy and I barely slept but we've made it to 2.5weeks and we're doing just fine, i'm sure you'll get there too although I do remember the 'how on earth am I going to handraise these puppies - what have I done??? feelings that were going on that night, especially at 2am and trying to convince Mia she should be in with the pups!
