  1. Nevafollo - I really would be laughing hard if your pointers came out the 'german' kind!
  2. Alyoshsa that would be hard work - one is enough here - I can't imagine 4!!!!
  3. Awwwwww squee!!!! Pug babies!!!! Sorry for the little one you lost but I'm glad the others and mum are ok
  4. Noted I probably shouldn't laugh, Karma is a bitch and we are planning another litter in 2013!
  5. If that happeneds with Kites litter I will be stuffing some back in Ha ha ha Just about wet myself reading this!!! If Mia ever reaches 10 in future litters i'll be telling her to cross her legs and not let anymore out!! They are so gorgeous but like Belljari said, when mum hotfoots it out of there and leaves me with feeding/cleaning duties and with Mia that starts at about 3 weeks it's so much work! Can't wait to see your big litter though! I'm sure you'll be fine managing them all!
  6. Wow 7+ that is great, will be lovely to see some pointer pups! We had 7 GSPs earlier this year and they were a bundle of fun. Mind you i'm glad we didn't end up with 10, 7 were handful enough by the time they were 4-5 weeks!
  7. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww lovely puppies everyone. Mine are 14 weeks old and i'm missing them already (they all went at 8 weeks), so much so that I can't wait for my next litter in 2013! Your puppy pics are keeping me going until then!
  8. Good Luck!! I had my first litter in July this year and I had many of the same questions. I have my fingers crossed for you that you have a lovely trouble free whelping and healthy pups. I'm still kicking myself over how well my girl did and I hope so badly that it goes as well again next time - I almost feel like maybe I had all my luck this time around! I really hope that isn't the case! I have my guys on Sentinel and I wormed the day she was due and I did worm her normally in her pregnancy (on advice from both my vet and my mentor breeder) I used the drontol liquid wormer for my pups (once again on advice from my mentor breeder) until they became too heavy to do them all on syrup and then we used a worming tablet from the vet (forget the name actually...) I didn't give calcium at all and although I had nutrigel on hand my bitch didn't seem to need any. Totally problem free whelping, all 9 pups born in 7 hours, mum very restful throughout the labour and although tired at the end she had a good feed and sleep and was fine. About the calcium there is a thread kicking around in here that I read and there are many valid points of view in there, If anyone knows where it is can you point it out? i'm going to have a look too and will re post if I can find it. Best thing is to have a look and see which point of view you agree with, for me, I can't see the point unless it's a breed specific thing. My mentor doesn't use it and my vet doesn't recommend it so that's where I stand but EVERYONE is different! I too am an RN (ED mainly) and I read EVERYTHING!!! I was so damn prepred it wasn't funny and things still cropped up that I had little freak outs about but really in the end all was well and I ended up with a lovely healthy bundle of pups. This however, does not mean that next time I will be any less worked up. I love my girl to pieces (as we all do) and I just cannot come to grips with the prospect of her being in any danger at all or losing any pups or having to have a c-section....it's any wonder I even was game enough to put her in pup! Good luck and make sure you post as time goes on and of course we want to see pics of the gorgeous pups!
  9. I was the idiot bawling when I dropped our Roxy off at Jetpets a few weeks ago. Even though we didn't consider keeping her we had a bit of a soft spot for her and it was one of the hardest things i've had to do. I swore to myself that I wouldn't cry and I wouldn't be silly but it just got the better of me. She is now in an absolutely wonderful home where she is spoiled rotten and I too was waiting on tenterhooks for the phone call. I know she's in the most wonderful home but it was still such a hard thing to do. You are most certainly not the only one!
  10. Me too, had no idea ACD's started out that way and my brother has one! I knew ours (GSPs) well the speckled ones anyway started out white with only their solid patches and of course the Dallies. I wonder who else can join the club?
  11. I wouldn't worry too much Ruth, like the others say, different breeds, different breeders, different idea and opinions, you just have to read through the suggestions and do what you think is best for your girl - not everyone will agree but you know your girl best. Each breed is different too so your girl's breeder should be able to help. It's hard when you're just starting out and what works for some won't work for you and you'll learn heaps this time around. I know now that there are extra things i'll have on hand next time that I didn't this time, things i'll just deal with at home rather than running on into the vets (now i know what it is and how to fix it I can just go in, ask for what I want and then do it at home). My suggestions for now would be to start getting excited!! I bet you are very excited (and maybe just a little bit terrfied - well I was) about these pups arriving!) I didn't supplement my girl during her pregnancy she did brilliantly on Advance Puppy Growth and looked a million dollars by the time the pups were 4 weeks old. I loved this book - The Whelping and Rearing of puppies - a complete and practical guide - Muriel P Lee http://www.amazon.com/Whelping-Rearing-Puppies-Complete-Practical/dp/0793804973 I ordered it from the U.S from amazon and it was my bible, I can't count the times that I looked things up while we had the pups. Worth every cent!
  12. Allerzeit I know what you mean, as much as I miss them terribly, when all 7 of ours were here in that last week they were ferals! Into absolutely everything, ganging up and trying to escape and driving their mother mad! They were gorgeous and I loved them to bits but somedays - seriously - you'd no sooner sort them all out then you'd turn around and feralness ensues!
  13. Hi Ruth, I had my first litter this year too and don't worry about being a newbie, we all have to start somewhere and the fact that you ask questions shows you care! I have GSPs so yes my bitch was active right up until the day she had her pups, in fact she kept up her walks (although there wasn't quite as much running and we didn't go as far - only because we wouldn't let her!) bounced everywhere then had massive upsidedown sleeps complete with snoring! I can't tell you about having the sire present as I don't have my own boys or about the chickens/eggs but i'm sure someone else here can. There are lots of very helpful more experienced breeders on here with lots of help and ideas. I found their advice invaluable when I had my babies who have only been gone a week now! Enjoy it while it lasts, some days it seems overwhelming and that first 24hrs is sleep deprived worrying hell BUT those 8 weeks fly so make sure you take plenty of photos (and put them up on here for us to see!) and enjoy them while they're there!! All too soon they will be off to their new homes and making their mark on the world!
  14. Ok so for Dogs Queensland this is what we have. I shall not breed from any bitch kept or owned by me causing it to whelp more than twice in eighteen months; My take on this is that your bitch can whelp twice in 18 months but not a third time?
  15. I know what you mean alyosha, I wasnt going to let smudge go to a home that was any less than perfect and there were quite a few enquiries this week. She went to a really lovely home yesterday and our boy goes today. So that means it's just Mia and our pup Stella now. I'm so glad I've been able to find such awesome homes and that I'll be able to see them all grow up!!
  16. Well another one left today....very sad to see her go - I really had a soft spot for her and there were quite a few tears shed when I dropped her off at the airport this morning. Only 3 left now, one is our keeper, one is going to his home this weekend coming and we only have the one girl left and a few enquiries that we're sorting through at the moment. I can't imagine this part ever gets any easier but at least they are all going to wonderful homes where they will be loved as much as I love my girls! Will put some piccies up later tonight or tomorrow.
  17. Mine went through a similar thing early on and we did end up having antibiotics at the vet the next morning. they were fine overnight as they were well hydrated, we also ended up giving some lectade feeds to give them a break from mum's milk and let their tummy's settle and ended up using scourban too. We think mum's milk might have been a bit rich for them. Then after we got it cleared up mum went on AB's for some mastitis and we did the whole thing again!
  18. Well most of mine are off this weekend - waiting for registered names.....fingers crossed they'll be back by the end of the week - they've taken my money so i'm hoping i'll get them back soon! Pup 1, 3 and 6 are being picked up this weekend, pup 7 flys to cairns on monday, pup 4 is staying until the following weekend then heading off to NSW and pup 5 is ours. Pup 2 is the only one not sold and I desperately want to keep her for myself but alas the landlord is not going for it and we are about 12months of having our own place. Have a possibility of another lady showing her for us and running her on until we can take her back but not 100% at the moment so we may end up selling her too :-( I'm going to miss them all so much but they have such lovely homes to go to I guess that is the only thing that will make it easier. Life will go back to normal to an extent but it will be sad to look out the window and not see all the pups playing in their pen.
  19. Hi Britt, Mine are gorgeous, lively and well, i'm absolutely torn as I have chosen my pup to keep but there is one that is not sold (because we were considering her) and she is turning out to be just as good as the one we chose....landlord won't let us have 3 dogs (oh I only wish we had our own place as it would then be a no-brainer) and she is something that I definitely want to breed from in the future. Another breeder had a lady show and grow out her pup for her until she was in a position to have her back and i'm now considering this option. I just can't imagine letting her go unless it was to someone who wanted to show/trial her. some pups are heading off this sunday coming, one is flying to cairns early next week and then it's just one to go home the following weekend, the one we're keeping and the one I desperately want to keep! Great to hear yours are well and all off to new homes!
  20. I have GSPs and I do mine at 6 - know other breeders so do
  21. Mine are GSP's - bought a whelping box from http://hydrobaths.com.au 1.2m x 1.2m wouldn't have wanted any smaller for my breed, if I had a really large litter eg. 12+ I might have run into trouble. By the time pups could jump out they were ready to be able to go onto paper in a small pen. Very easy to clean, pig rails are good and love the removeable half door at the front. Just used newspaper in the bottom with vetbed (best invention EVER) in the bottom. I liked the greenback vetbed because it dried quicker after washing - my rubber stuff took a look longer to dry. My bitch doesn't dig though so I really didn't have problems with her pulling up the greenback. My whelping box was inside so mainly used in house heating - having a short coat breed I don't run into too many problems with mum getting hot, used hot water bottles for babies when mum was out - had no problems, they cuddled up to it and were just fine.
  22. The one we've decided on was the one I picked the moment she was born. I told myself don't be silly - how on earth could I pick at that stage!! Really haven't gone off her at any point and now theyre 6 weeks old weve had another more experienced breeder that has been guiding us along the way have a look and we agree. There is one other girl I really like but I didn't really look at her much until I had a really good look at them all and thought - gee she's pretty nice too! Our boy is a REALLY nice dog but we aren't at a point where we can keep a boy yet. We've tried not to really 'pick' one until now but we've had to make some decisions along the way and I think you get to a point where you know who is up for contention anyway and who isn't.
  23. I'd like to leave mine to 8 weeks too but even so at this stage we know who is and who isn't a contender so really we can line up homes for the others. I think deep down I really have known for quite a while who it is and I don't think I will change my mind - something pretty spectacular would have to happen for me to go in a different direction!
