  1. to be honest my Dalmation girl turned out to be deaf so we desexed her & she had no puppies & I don't think it made any difference.. she was a complete goof & sweetheart till she crossed the river.. she never had any major health issues either..
  2. I reckon you would find most small dog breeds would outdo a human at hiking over terrain any day..
  3. lol.. Dex was holding her ear down so he could lick it.
  4. sorry its so small.. but this is my cat at about 6 weeks old maybe a bit older not sure, I found him on the side of the road.. the cat we already had wouldn't have a bar of him so he would sleep with my now departed Dalmation.. & I managed to snap this pic out of the lounge room window one day.. Holly (Dalli) was so good with him (with any cat really) Just so you can see how small Dex (Kitten was) I don't know who really came up with the old adage that cats & dogs are enemies when they really don't need to be some of the photos in this thread are so beautiful.. it is lovely to see cross species hanging out together in such a nice way.. I think I may have a photo floating around somewhere of the dog & the cat in the same basket with a rooster standing on the edge of the basket.. think it may be on mums comp
  5. Frost, what about Storm, Ice or Icey. thanx Pax, I have considered those, even considered those in other langauges, nothing much seems to satisfy me there
  6. thanx Newfsie righto so I thought I would test some names out on you all.... this is the short list of names so far, I thought I'd make a list of names I like & then when I finally meet my boy in person I can test them out on him & see if he responds to any of them.. ok here goes. Hail Kobe Loki (sorry Lokilani I had been considering this one before seeing your doggies name lol but after I saw it again there I really liked it) Tchecky Mogwai Splinter having looked at some of my other fave names I have come up with a bit of a way to narrow down what I'm looking for in a name between 4 & 6 letters, with 2 syllables, ends in an i sound, does not start with an a sound, something thats a little foreign sounding, possibly asian or european, hhmm I'm not being too picky am I lol.. any suggestions would be appreciated keep in mind though I have the feel of a name in my mind its just a matter of finding the name
  7. Chilli? Kind of goes with the frosty theme (chilly). Chilli definitely has some serious potential.. & Lokelani your dogs are very lucky they are both very cool names
  8. Thanx everyone for all your advice, I was considering Rusty or Dusty, but neither are really very suitable either, He does have Frost in his show name, but I don't like Frosty either I'm hoping that once I meet him in person something will come, Would love something short but foriegn, I feel confident that he'll pick up a new name pretty quickly, just got to find something nice sounding is all, something that rolls off the tongue easily..
  9. thanx everyone.. I was considering what happened to dogs that were adopted from the pound.. now to just find something else that suits & is easy to say & sounds nice.. ggrrr its worse than trying to name a child I really appreciate all your input, it has given some relief
  10. thats a good idea & I've tried to find something similar sounding that I like but haven't come across anything that I could live with.. maybe I'm being a bit too picky but I want his name to be nice.
  11. ok so I need some advice & maybe a pep talk at the same time, back story, I'm soon to become a proud owner of an adult dog, well he's a bit over 3 yrs old, he comes with a pet name that I am not super keen on. I mean it kinda makes me cringe. would it seem or be cruel if I changed his name to something I could say without thinking of something not so pretty, I really don't want his name to affect the way I feel about him.. he's really a very beautiful boy. are his previous owners likely to feel offended that I don't like his pet name?? I love his show name, its lovely but a bit too long to be yelling out the back door any advice or other peoples experiences in changing a dogs name would be appreciated
  12. oh golly ouch.. some of these stories have had me laughing well & truly.. mine are pretty pale really lol. when I was about 8 years old the dog we were babysitting & I were rough housing on the lounge room floor, he ended up slamming into my face & bent my glasses, I snuck upstairs to try & fix them only to break them clean across the nose band.. mum asked me why I wasn't wearing my glasses when I came back downstairs, I think I said something along the lines of I don't feel like wearing them.. got my butt well & Truly kicked over that one.. then when I was about 12 or 13 I threw my back out while playing a game of chasings with the dog, was running up the hall then through the kitchen door, into the lounge room, & then tripped over both dog & door jam from the lounge room back into the hall way & did a massive body plant into the wall at a fairly bad angle, was fairly dazed, winded & I couldn't move.. no lasting damage from that one though.. & yup I've done more damage while getting onto horses than anything else, otherwise nothing really major with my dogs

    Puppy+cats

My ex wild kittie that lives with my mum, I got him when he was about 4 weeks old, & I already had Holly my recent;y deceased Dalmation, & Dex (the cat) ended up sleeping in Hollies basket with her, I have some beautiful pics of Dex washing Hollies ear while Holly slept. in fact the other elderly cat we had there deteasted the new kitten & thats why he ended up hanging out with the dog. when the older female cat arrived we also had Holly too & the elderly lady cat had been attacked by dogs, so we were a little worried she would find offence with Holly, but Holly being the sweet girl she is kinda just pretended to ignore the female cat & in the end the cat would sneak into the dogs kennel to sleep with her too.. (it must be something that Holly did or didn't do that made cats feel very comfortable with her) a thought just came to me, if your worried about your little fellows eyes in a cat swipe attempt why not get Harper (cute name ) some eye protection till he learns the dynamics of the cats & him.. just an outside the box kinda idea..
  14. right now I don't have a dog (well I do, just waiting to bring him home) but we have 2 cats, we started out with just the one but just before christmas another ginger long haired boy came up for adoption at the cats home, we liked the look of him & it was before christmas & he'd lost his previous owner to old age, it was (my suggestion) our good deed for the christmas season anyway they both sleep on the beds, & I have covers on the couches that get stripped & washed to keep the couches clean.. in saying that, the first of the 2 cats does also have a special cat bed on top of the wardrobe in case he feels he needs his own privacy & space.. once I get my dog I'm not sure how the second of the cats is going to cope as he normally sleeps on top of me, but the little doggie is used to cats so I'm hoping with some quiet socialisation & greetings they will all feel comfortable to sleep on the beds.. besides its cold here in tassie in winter at night so I would worry like anything that my new little doggie would freeze without the shared body heat.. it may sound gross but when I was younger I had a pet rat that used to escape from her enclosure & I would wake up to her curled into my neck, I gave up trying to keep her in her enclosure during the night cause she would just get back out & be back beside my neck before I knew it lol.. she was very clean & never peed or pooped in bed, she was strangely very well toilet trained.. (I know I'm going to get funny wow thats gross looks from some of you) to be honest as long as the animals are wormed regularly & kept free of fleas & other bugs then why not.. but then its all a matter of preference isn't it..
  15. I would recommend the coconut oil too, it is also a natural healing agent & is great for clearing up blackheads & pimples, also good for wounds & scarring, I use the stuff on myself, only the organic stuff though. My mum gets its in bulk from an australian source.. its great stuff & it soaks in very quickly & does not leave an oily residue..
  16. uurrrrr.... (sniffle) lovely.. doesn't help that I laid my lovely goofy Dallie girl to rest just before christmas at the age of 13 1/2 that was nice though so..
  17. however it has been established that "They' may not have used Products deliberately. if your so offened by it, son't visit their website & don't contact them regarding their puppies.. find someone who is aware of the words they use to advertise their puppies & forget the other website..
  18. does your mum know how to use the camera on her iphone?? sounds like she is set up perfectly to get some pictures of the lab when it does enter your yard, have you contacted the real estate agent?? it doesn't matter if the owner is overseas, you still have rights in fact you have a lot more rights as a tenant than you might think.. I would also suggest going round & introducing yourself to your neighburs, make with the friendly, you never know you may be introduced to the lab by accident I hope nothing seriously nasty happens on account of this lab coming into your yard.
  19. it depends I know that assistance dogs & guide dogs can go most places but their owners have special cards that give them these rights.. it might be worth you going into your regular haunts (without dog at first) & asking if they allow dogs there!!
  20. I remember when I got my Dalmation puppy, I was 12 & she was supposed to be my dog so at night she was crated in my room, by golly did she howl at night lol.. poor little puppy.. poor mum, I would do the first couple of get ups to take her out for a pee & then back in for a cuddle, but by the end of the night my mum would find me huddled with my head under the pillow hoping the dallie would just stop crying.. she turned out to be the best most beautiful loving little doggie ever.. I miss her very very much.. & i'm glad we stuck it through the tough beginning when the poor little girl who had come from a very very large litter to being the only puppy in the house... I'm glad to hear you stuck it through with Harper.. not that rehoming in a tough situation isn't a bad thing to do, its more about giving yourself a chance to settle into things rather than Harper this time round though I am getting an older dog, as I know that he will fit my life as it is now a lot better than a puppy would, I fostered a pup a few months back for a couple of nights so she could get used to being alone without being stuck in a cold shelter kennel, man that was a real eye opener, she was adorable, but mischevous & golly she could cry.. glad I have chosen an adult this time round.. & very much looking forward to him joining my life
  21. aaww how cool is that...!!! mmm I can just imagine being able to carry one of those in a saddle bag & bringing it out just when you need an extra set of legs on the ground to keep the sheep in line lol... so cute..
  22. not to mention those ones that do win even if they have crested in them tend to be x'd with another breed..
