  1. As long as your pup is well behaved, on a leash and not getting in the way there is probably no problem. BUT..... you knew there was a but didn't you? If this is the first show you have been to, then you may want to leave her at home this time. If you are going to get a feel for what happens at a show it is probably better not to have your pup because then you can concentrate on what's going on without having to worry about your pup. HTH Bear. Thank you, I had those exact thoughts running through my head; If I'm concentrating on Cleo, I wont be focusing on what I'm there for! You've helped make my mind up - thanks again
  2. Hi, another new newbie =] I'm a bit late getting into showing (still deciding whether to do conformation or agility, my partner and I have different opinions). My girl is 6 months in October (when I hope to first show her, at a very small country show - expect more questions around then lol) but there is a bigger show this weekend that I am just going along to get a feel for (agility is on as well, same day/same time/different place) my question is: As a hopeful future exhibitor, with a main registered bitch + a member of DogsNSW is it out of place/rude/wrong to bring my pup along? I wasn't going to take her, but if it IS ok, the chance to bring her out with us on sunny 30 degree day would be nice. Thanks, I've gone through a ton of threads but haven't yet stumbled across this question other than "members of the public bringing dogs along".
  3. I feed kibble and BARF patties. Kibble is EP Holistic Select in the process of switching to Black Hawk which is lamb flavour. THe Barf patties I use are mainly pork or kangaroo, the roo in particular has lower protein and lower fat. I used Combo once but it was too "red" meaty - dals shouldn't have red meat. It's hard knowing what is "safe" and what isn't, and some of the "safe" foods I would not feed with regularity. So far I've done ok though! I understand the situations are very different, just thought it might help find some info (maybe). I wish you all the best in finding a solution.
  4. I'm not sure if this will help but Dalmatians need a low purine diet also, from day dot. When searching, maybe including the word dalmatian could help (as I see espinay did above).
  5. Hi Sheena, just want to jump in and say hi, I'm in Coffs and was reading all about BH and wondering how on earth I was going to try it when I ran into either your son or son-in-law (he mentioned his mother bred BC's) at the markets. I bought a small bag but it might be a while before I buy more coz I have like 20kg+ of pro plan and Eagle Pack Holistic Select sitting around (work in a pet store). I'm happy on Holistic but Aussie made BH is winning me over - just can't tell the boss. Sorry, just wanted to say how happy I was to see BH being sold "out there" where I happened to be walking. I'm hoping to get the weekend of the coffs trial off, if I do I'll come say hi!
  6. My Cleo definately has her selective moments! Although she listens to me most of the time now (I'm definately her Alpha) she used to be more selective and even now she ignores my father in law and sometimes my parter too. She always comes when she's called though too! I am so grateful for that (she's 5 and a half months) I find that segment kinda only grazes over the "health issues" and special diet! I'm already so careful of what Cleo eats to avoid kidney stones, as I see it,it can't be harmful to be careful.
  7. I don't have any photos of my girl using the wobbler but she LOVES it and so do I! It's a great toy, although its funny when Cleo - my girl, does all the work and the in laws dog just scoots behind picking up most of the kibble... I bought it from my work (a pet store), in a regional town that's kinda struggling I try not to buy online, even for my dog books.
  8. Hi, I'm in Coffs Harbour and very keen to begin showing my dal girl but I am clueless where to start with her training (other than stacking, we are getting there...) My parents showed our lab when I was a kid but that was a decade ago and I was only 10. I've been directed to try show training classes, does anyone here know anyone who runs these classes in Coffs? We do have a Dog Training club but as far as I know, they focus on Obedience and Agility - although I will shoot off an email to double check. Thanks in advance
  9. Thanks for posting that link. I'm a snake and dog lover and I hate hearing about people killing snakes just because they were a potential threat. I've had the misfortune of losing a dog (not in my care at the time) to a snake bite, a most beloved puppy only 6 months old but I definately don't blame the snake for using it's ONLY defence.
  10. Haha I live on the mid north coast of NSW and the breeder is in Tas... I doubt I'll wrangle my partner round to boarding her, she is our (his) baby.
  11. I wouldn't mind boarding her, but I'm only 50% of the decision making committee. A kennel run was the best outcome we could agree on.
  12. Snakes don't always stick the rules of their names. Brown snakes can be black, brown, and have stripes, and the same goes for variouss other venomous snakes like tigers and blacks. Never assume you have seen or been bitten by a brown etc, let the venom detection kit at the hospital do the talking! Worked with a man by the name of Steve McEwan who is a local reptile expert. Learnt some amazing things!
  13. Thanks, will take note and make it difficult to dig into the run. We plan on placing it in a highly visible area to those to stay at home most. Luckily someone is home 90% of the time. I know that male dogs will smell her from quite a distance and come-a-running. Its great that we live in a relaxed beach side village but I fear some people are too relaxed about their dogs getting out.
  14. Hi, I have an entire female dalmatian (we plan to show her) nearing 6 months... we live with the in laws and I'm having trouble convincing them that a male dog WILL climb or dig under the colourbond fence and WILL climb the other fence on the courtyard. There may not be great footing on either fence but a determined dog will do what it takes right? I've seen my parent's dog mated at 6 months when a mutt climbed our fences which were 2m tall (but climbable apparently)and she had to have an abortion. Luckily we knew the owner who paid for the costs of his roaming dog (it was a known roamer). Can anyone here tell me YOUR stories of seeing a determined dog get to a female? We've decided to buy a petsafe kennel run which we will put a roof on but from the frosty reception at the dinner table- this isn't welcomed. Much appreciated =]
  15. My dal is a bit of a whiner, when she wants my attention. The worst time is while we are eating dinner, she can't see us but can hear/smell it and whines the whole time. I don't know how to deal with it coz ignoring it certainly isn't working and I seem to be the only one committed to definately NOT going out to her when she's whining (my MIL will take their dogs dinner out when I'm trying to stay back until Cleo stops, she doesn't seem to get it despite my explaining) She used to whine at bedtime too (they sleep inside at night, separated by a babygate) and ignoring worked for that but not dinner time. Hopefully time will improve the issue, and a move out of the main house! When the move happens, I plan to crate her while myself and my partner eat and then let her eat when we are done, out of the crate...good idea or no? (Sorry to jump in the thread with my own questions)
  16. For me, it would depend on why I dislike them. Personal preferences/sexuality etc don't bother me but I do trust my gut about people and if I didn't feel right about it I couldn't go through with it (although I have trouble telling people "no"). That said, I would be hesitant to sell a pup to my sisters! At least I could keep an eye on them...
  17. Its sad. I'm glad there are people like you running rescues, although sad that rescues have to exist; mostly because of these people. We don't sell pups or kittens and I encourage people to either check out DOL or the RSPCA and thoroughly discourage them visiting the only pet store in town that sells pups. I've got so many "shake your head" stories from work, one lady wouldn't spend a few dollars on fish food but was looking on our advertisement wall for a free dog....made me wonder.
  18. Hi there - best dog ever :D Not the easiest by any stretch of the imagination to run in agility but SO much fun when you find out what makes them tick. They are smart. Too smart actually!!! Ziggy has made me a better trainer as any mistakes I make are magnified for the world to see LOTS of positive reinforcement and variety in training - food, tug, whatever works - don't get grumpy in training or they'll take the first bus home. Don't be in a rush to start on equipment - LOTS of groundwork, focus and control first - it made our transition to agility much easier (we started agility training when he was 2). As a newbie to the modern way of handling I found that it was harder for me to get it right than the dog - so I would run the course 4 or 5 times and when I got it right I would run Zig through once or twice to save him from getting bored. Zig is in Masters Jumping (a couple of passes thus far) and Excellent Agility now plus the Open courses (a few passes) and we're both loving it. Happy to answer any questions you have. If you have access to a good agility club or a trainer that's a great start. One of my private instructors runs VERY fast Border Collies but is really understanding of breed quirks so I love getting lessons with her. The Dalmatian thread is a bit quiet of late but it would be great to see some more pics in there! Ah - just saw that you had posted - sorry, somehow I missed it! Also let us know the breeder as a history of dog sports in the lines help (message me if you don't want to post on the public forum). Video here but we have both improved a lot since that was taken - purely by concentrating on a couple of aspects of my handling and his understanding... thanks for the reply spotted devil! Cleo is already showing her intelligence (or is it cheekiness?) and her ability to get into things she shouldnt is amazing (climbing on a gas bottle to reach a counter top? for food of course). She is extremely food driven, but also toy driven - yay. When toys don't work, food will. Your Ziggy is gorgeous by the way - will pm you now once I figure it out...
  19. Hi all, just wanted to share something that got me going today (and still is, if i'm writing this several hours later)... I work in a Petstock in NSW and I was standing at the counter while my workmate served a lady, and the lady happens to ask if we know if any so and so breed are around, we don't know, and she mentions that she has a lovely boy and wants to get a girl and breed them.... At this stage the eyebrows are raising but she goes on... "He was a bit of a street dog really..."etc. At this stage, i had to say something (she wasn't actually talking to me directly, I was standing aside). So I said "Make sure you at least do health testing, you know hips, elbows, eyes; you don't want his progeny to inherit anything bad" - blank look "Oh, I've had him for years, he's fine" ARRGGHH. Yea sure he's fine, not on the register, no papers, no health tests I didn't have enough time, or patience to lecture her, and it wouldn't have gone down well I think. I'm only 20 years old, I have a 5month dal on the main and I am keen to show/agility and with success, yes, breed down the track. I will do health testing - no question about it- and if she fails, she will be desexed immediately. I have learnt sooo much from this forum (thanks) and hearing ignorant people like this irks me to no end....I hope she NEVER finds a female of this breed!
  20. Can anyone comment on dallies in agility? I've got a 5 month old pup that I would love to get into either agility or showing/conformation.
  21. Haha Stormie, maybe its just my work that has Comfortis more expensive than Advantage? I've memorised the prices of Frontline and Advantix currently because that's what we've been selling the most of (at the moment), they are both mostly cheaper than Comfortis here, but even up when you get to the big dogs. Can't exactly remember Advantage $'s, really not a big seller here for dogs. We're in regional NSW btw.
  22. I agree that using Sentinel could be a waste of time if doggy daycare is a regular occurance. Capstar isn't that cheap (well not in my town) and using it every time you see an adult flea could be money-consuming. I use Interceptor (heartworm and intestinal worm components) with an adulticide - Advantix is my choice. This is the most cost effective method I found. Comfortis is also an awesome product, but expensive when you consider it is only doing fleas, for more $$ than advantix. I really only recommend Comfortis to those customers (I work in a pet store) who have had absolutely no luck with spot ons or don't worry about ticks (My personal opinion, im sure my boss would rather I recommend the exxy products more)
  23. I work at a Petstock in NSW, we are having trouble getting it in and having to deal with angry customers when we can't help is upsetting.
