  1. Hey there, I've just launched the new Facebook page for the Whippet Racing Club of Victoria. We are looking to have a bumper year in 2012 and invite all new whippets and members to come along. Click HERE to view it. Be sure to 'like' the page and share it with your fellow whippeteers. Race dates will be listed in February as we race from March to November, meeting once per month. This is a very social club but also for those who like to take it a little more competitively... Races are timed and there are trophies awarded at the end of the season! Come and join in the fun in 2012! MnDM
  2. Would one of those enablers be Ososwift by any chance? Thanks God there is nothing left on there I want (I think - not game to go and check ) Now I'd never want to blame Lewis for convincing me that my whippies are missing out ;) I didn't think there was anything left either.... Then I looked.... Dumb, dumb, dumb!
  3. Well.... I put in my first order and received it last week! Now I've just put in my 2nd order! Gah! I think with the $160 saving in shipping just encourages you to buy more! But the first order was all toys! This one is collars, treat bags, beds, damn iSqueaks and cuz balls (thanks to the enablers... You know who you are), books and lures for the whippies!
  4. Have you tried adding cold pressed coconut oil (from health food stores) to his diet? We feed 1tsp per 10kg body weight. We no longer have issues with itchy skin, grass allergies etc. Just put it directly on their food. Our guys love it and it's the first thing they eat from their bowl. Their coats are thick and shiney too. It's worth a shot. We've referred many itchy dogs who were costing and arm and a leg at the vets... Who now are vet free due to coconut oil daily.
  5. I wanted to know what people do about council registration if you have multiple dogs but by law can only have two registered with the council? When I was single I had two cats, as it made it a lot easier finding rentals. Now we've bought our own place we have 4 cats, 3 dogs and thinking of getting a fourth! But our council only allows 3 dogs in suburbia! One of the guys up the road has 6 racing greyhounds! Does this mean that a lot of people have some dogs registered and some not?
  6. Monet ALWAYS greets us at the back door when we get home with a toy in her mouth and roo rooing, Benson will grab a toy as soon as he sees us and Diva licks the screen door really slooooowly (we have a perforated steel screen door). If put outside Diva does this whine and sloooow licking of the screen door. She also won't settle unless she's seen me in the morning which prompts my partner to set the dogs on me mid sleep-in. Benson when he poops will do it in a big circle, spinning round to sniff the first bit that hits the ground. Diva and Monet when they pee, they squat but try to not have their back feet on the ground. Usually one is in the air and they are balancing on one rear toe! Very funny to watch.
  7. My order arrived last week! The humans had a blast taking everything out, squeaking them and generally driving the dogs mental... Then they all got put back in the box and put away. I can tell you right now that one of the whippets had a serious case of the sadz when we wouldn't let her look!
  8. Have you tried Black Hawk? We use cold pressed coconut oil. 1tblsp daily for your dog would clear up skin irritations. We have a dog who had grass allergy and skin rashes, we've been using coconut oil for 12mths and have no dramas. Just put it straight on their food. FYI our lil guys skin cleared up within 2wks of using it!
  9. I wants one.... I've written my letter to Santa, the stocking is hung and I've been verrrrrry good this year!
  10. I work full-time, and so does my partner, though my roster rotates. Some weeks they only have 2 days home alone or 5 one week per month. They are home for 12hrs. They have their beds, toy box, diggy pit and each other (3dogs total)... They play chasey and wrestle a lot together. I'll scatter the kibble on our lawn for them to find (only when it's dry), if wet I scatter it on concrete.... Not nearly as hard to find. Usually one weekend day per month the two whippets go racing so the lil fluffy guy has to stay home. He usually gets his dinner, lamb bones, frozen pupsicles or a treat to chew. He loves his time away from the crazies! When we're home, the dogs are inside!
  11. Hey, How much has she researched Whippets? And what are her reasons for wanting a whippet and not a mix breed 'oodle? We have two whippets, and unless she has some time to dedicate to her pup... They arent like 'oodles! Many aren't affectionate with their owners or loyal like a lab might be. They also usually cannot be let off leash unless in a secure/fenced area due to having a high prey drive and racing off after things and deciding they have absolutely no recall. They are extremely fast which can be scary if they see a bunny, bird, or another dog in the distance... They shoot off with no warning! Whippets aren't particularly fond of playing with other dogs at the park and have such thin skin that doesn't handle the rough and tumble and tears easily. They feel the cold and heat a lot more than other dogs due to such a thin coat and require indoor living. They are not n outdoors dog. Not to mention that whippets can easily clear the average backyard fence if they want to. If she wants a lap dog, maybe she's better looking at a Maltese? Pomeranian? I hear your frustration. Tell her to join the whippet breed thread in the sub forums. Whippets aren't for the faint hearted. Best of luck.
  12. IggyL, to have venomous snakes in your backyard would be AMAZING huh? Even when you're not home and your dogs are out there even when you've put up shade cloth, kept lawns low, no piles of rubbish for them to hide in? Snake bite deaths to humans is not what is being discussed so much here, it is deaths of animals, people's pets. I see you live in Vic? Melbourne or the far north? Do you have a licence to catch wild snakes? I feel that disturbing animals in their natural environment is the height of abuse and cruelty to satisfy your own curiosity! Having grown up in Western Queensland where we'd see a venomous snake almost on a daily basis at close range near or in the house... I can tell you right now that living in suburbia voids you of seeing them this frequently. Having snakes as 'pets' is one thing, you know they are in their vivariums at all times. You don't (or shouldn't) come home to empty exhibits and having to hunt for them in the house! Speaking of animal lover and ones love for animals and being selective.... You eat meat? Killing livestock for your daily eating pleasure? Killing rats, mice, rabbits for your snakes? Glass houses!
  13. No offense IL, but a venomous snake is VERY different to the python you have with your dog! I would prefer all snakes in unwanted places be relocated, but people who are doing everything they can to keep them away, but at wits end with them still getting in may value their own lives and that of their family and fur babies more than said snake! Before you jump on me, I'm a herper, so I understand your love of these animals!
  14. We use baby sunscreen on our dogs! It is purple but rubs in clear. It doesn't have the harsher chemicals of adult sunscreen! It's a lot more expensive too.
  15. I think at the end of the day you need to do what is right for you. Can you withdraw your resignation from your current workplace? Bear in mind that most dream jobs seem awesome from the outside, but sometimes once you are there the politics, management style, etc may make it your nightmare. I work in an industry with a relatively small number of staff Australia wide and quite specialised., and highly competitive. We are not rolling in cash, do it for the love of the animals and whilst I have days where I love what I do, the day to day monotony can make me forget how awesome my job is. I used to earn $32,000 a year in this industry in NZ, paying $600mth in rent alone, electricity ($100mth) and phone bills were much higher than here and I still managed to travel home to Oz or even month long trips overseas. I don't drink, smoke or waste my cash... It can be done if you budget. Whilst my salary has increased, my spending habits haven't. I say go for it. With vet nursing and marketing, you could get into some cool positions! Good luck. MnDM
  16. Daily without fail. But usually pick it up when we let them out before work, pick up after work. If at home it is picked up as it falls. With 3 dogs on premium dry and raw there isn't much. But I hate poop on our small yard when they do zoomies... Gak! The nightly walk usually expels one poop from at least one pooch!
  17. Hmmmn, just had a look at the site. I think it's a great idea but I don't know how many people would sign up, not to mention issues with vandals because at the end of the day the fence is low enough to climb. Shame there are no trees, and it's just one big open space. Responsible pet owners who are sick of the morons who frequent the off leash parks would be keen I would think. And YES I would use one!
  18. So sad to read this Sway! I'd been lurking hoping for her to be found... Unfortunately not in this way. I think it's amazing how during these times how DOLers are a selfless bunch doing all they can to help. So sorry Sway xx
  19. Thank you to OP for letting us know about this! I've just spent a small sum on toys! It is soon to be Xmas time ya know! If when you put your order in and it gives you no free shipping option (only if you've spent $100 or more), select PICK UP and in the comments put that there was no free shipping option and for it to be sent to the billing/shipping address. Their webmaster is currently working on fixing the glitch that is stopping us Aussies getting the automatic free shipping. Cheers, Meagan
  20. Awesome pics Krisilin. Loved this ad heaps too.
  21. Awesome photos. Would have been a great day too... We couldn't go... But will be there on November 13.
  22. being that it is in a Hospital, and that experienced Zoo staff are responsible , I would have no doubts ! I can tell you that it'll be kept to the same high standards we keep them in the zoo. The nursing staff, sponsors all love it and spend time just 'having a look' while we're there feeding and servicing the exhibit. It'll be a great distraction for the 600+ kids who'll go through outpatients daily. This group is a non breeding group, it is also a very stable family group so outbreaks of violence or aggression will be very infrequent and when it does occur it is short live, lasting only a few seconds. There is interest from other hospitals around the world. The aquarium at RCH is also awesome! We are in a unique position due to the zoo's proximity to the hospital means it's a short walk across the park.
