QUESTIONS
1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc)A- I am on to my second great dane now.
2. Where and why was the breed first developed? A- Germany for hunting and fighting, because of it's harsh temperament and combative nature.
3. How common is it in Australia? A- I think the great dane in Australia is as common as anywhere else
4. What is the average lifespan? A- being a large dog their life span isn't as long as others they average to live around 8-10 years but there are dogs that have lived to 13 plus.
5. What is the general temperament/personality? A- Treat a dane like your child. They are full of personality, love and companion-ism, they don't like to be yelled at, and their heart is broken easy.
6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? A- A dog cant be healthy if not permitted adequate exercise, (considerable) they need plenty of space to move freely as well as daily walks
7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? A- Quite easily, they are a dream to own
8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? A-No dog should have to, they are our pets for a reason so therefore they should be given all the attention they deserve and is possible to give them
9. How much grooming is required? A- Brushing at least once a week, cleaning their ears trimming their nails, and a bath.
10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? A-No, not if brought up around kids, my 2 nad 5 years old love ours to bits, and they are very patient with children.
11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? A- Yes there are, bloat hip displasia all of these things and problems most large dogs are susceptible to
12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be A- Ask about the parents of both parents of your pup. If they have had testing done, and for what they have been tested for.
to answer the question it is to prevent bloat, i use raised feeders as i too believe it is more comfortable for them, and there is no proof that raised feeders to cause bloat therefore you have nothing to loose by using them and if it prevents it in the meantime then you win.
