  1. Never heard of it - what is it exactly?? Do a bit of Googling :) (quote)From the website NotMilk.com, an educational website from the Dairy Education Board, Executive Directory Robert Cohen has some very negative things to say about carrageenan. His article states “Carrageenan is a commonly used food additive that is extracted from red seaweed by using powerful alkali solvents. These solvents would remove the tissues and skin from your hands as readily as would any acid.” When addressing whether carrageenan is natural, this author states “Carrageenan is about as wholesome as momosodium glutamate (MSG), which is extracted from rice, and can equally be considered natural. Just because something comes from a natural source does not mean that it is safe. The small black dots in the eyes of potatoes contain substances that are instantly fatal if eaten. Got poison? You will if you eat the black dots on the “eyes” of potatoes.” (I must learn about those black dots…)(end of quote) for the rest of the report Carrageenan in Pet Food Thanks - I already had. :) Seems to only be in the canned food not the treats or kibble. It does appear only in the wet food. I emailed Wellness about it and got this response: Carrageenan Gum: Carrageenan is a natural carbohydrate that has been extracted from a variety of red seaweed and has been used as an emulsifying and stabilizing agent in the in the pet food industry for several decades now with a long standing history of safety. This is also true of this ingredient in human foods. Additionally, Carrageenan has been studied extensively by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Commission and was determined to be safe. Also, AAFCO has defined and approved use of this ingredient as a “special purpose product.”
  2. They are biscuitlike, not soft, but they do crumble. Not much good for training treats in my eyes as it takes my puppy several seconds to chew through even a small piece, I use them as an occasional snack, or for filling Kongs/treat toys :)
  3. Really disgusting... I feel for this poor woman. As far as I'm concerned the dog owners are responsible and they ought to be held responsible. In my eyes that means financial compensation. If they have no assets, go out and get a damn second job and face up to what you and your dogs did to ruin a life.
  4. And if everyone were as responsible as you, we wouldn't have problems - but the majority of pet owners are not being responsible I agree the responsible minority shouldn't have to conform to desexing rules just because some people are ruining it for the others - but I also belive things shouldn't stay as they are and continue to allow acts of blatant cruelty to continue.
  5. I remember that Rotti on the Show. It said he was specially good at police work, because his father had been an outstanding police dog. Silly burglar! No wonder he's nursing some wounds. And he's being charged with aggravated cruelty to a dog! Among other things. Yes, the name is the same I remember, he was impressive to see in action. Nice one Nat, stand up for yourself and your master! Liz why do you say he'll be the last Rotty?
  6. How exceptionally interesting... Pfizer is the manufacturer of Revolution. Very very interesting. Yep I think I will always continue, just like I will always get my puppies vacc'd. Even in winter, I just couldn't be sure that some of the mozzies aren't coming from homes with heating etc in some way too. Quite what I think. Except here, even in winter, you get mossies. Certainly worse in summer, but year round pests and potential spreaders of the disease. But I think when Maya goes in next week for vaccination, I will ask our vet when she last saw a Heartworm infected dog out of interest :)
  7. I think a case of dog choosing a master? :)
  8. That was the very first thing I thought of too. There are people about who simply will not tolerate dogs barking and they take matters into their own hands Mien as well Not that it makes it okay, of course, but tragic as these awful situations are, I always wish I knew the full circumstances, so that you can begin to see why it was done and how to avoid such things in future. Not that there is any cure for cruel humans...
  9. I think it was just that, a freak accident, after reading that. Just one of those long shots, and it was handled very well in my opinion. Hopefully he will have no lasting fear of water after this!
  10. Well, my new girl Maya has come home! It'll be a week tomorrow and she has settled wonderfully! She's best friends with Zeke, eating well, progressing well at basic training, and blown away all my workmates, my family and the vet staff with her cuteness! Thought I'd share some photos :) Maya exploring on her first night home! Maya and Zeke on the first night, about four hours after they'd met ♥ Chomping on Zeke! Ruined it! Record time too... Ohhai Zeke! Crazy puppy alert! Eating own foot! Conked out :) All in all couldn't be happier with her first week :) I feel very privileged, and just can't wait to get home and see her. The next few days are going to be tough as I have a trip to Brisbane, and she'll be home with my husband, but I will still miss her terribly!
  11. I don't like his account of events when the supervisor gets there, how he is saying there was quite a bit of time between approaching the owner, and saying the dog was coming at him, and he backed off and placed himself behind a truck - from the sound clip at the start, over the course of two seconds, the cop has gone from yelling 'show me your hands' to the owner, to 'f**k it's a dog' and you hear the shot fired. There is no way he backed off and took cover. He obviously approached on a hair-trigger and when the dog came running towards the scene he has just reacted. Poor Cattle Dog Rest easy little man.
  12. I use Comfortis and it is unparalleled for flea control. I also sell this product at my work and everybody who uses it raves about it, very few things get the amount of positive feedback Comfortis has! I do recommend feed this one with food though as others have said, on an empty stomach it can cause vomiting.
  13. Was going to make this topic myself, for the same reason, but Ben and Jerry you have beaten me to it :D I too am very eager to hear people's feedback, good or bad. Going to give Wellness a whirl for my cat and dogs ASAP. We have already given a test run to the Wellbars in the Peanuts & Honey variety and Zeke and Maya both think they are great. I must say they look impressive, they look and smell like small human grade muesli bars! http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showcat.php?cat=all&stype=1&si=Wellness Has some good things to say about it
  14. I think this is the wrong type of push for bored dogs at home. A big bone, a food-stuffed Kong, a chicken wing frozen in a four-litre icecream container is they're outside dogs... but a specific channel for dogs to watch? Taking it too far. Maya watched 'Bolt' with me this evening, and she did actually seem interested in a few bits in particular with doggie vocalization, but I'd hardly leave the TV on all day for her!
  15. Whew what a lucky save for William! Could have wound up a very sad story. Hardy little Arabians!
  16. My last dog, a Jack Russell X, had one testicle retained. I waited a few extra months to desex hoping it would descend on its own but he had to go under the knife to retrieve it. It was, from memory, around $200 more expensive. His recovery time was hard to me to judge; he bounced back far quicker than Zeke did after his surgery... but then, that is JRs for you, and my Jayne in particular. He didn't know he'd been sedated - he got home and was like "Mum? Why am I in this crate? Want to run around with you and Zeke, lemme oooout!'
  17. I feed frozen, Zeke loves his frozen treats be it a bone or a frozen beef stock flavoured Kong :D
  18. Peekasso! Newfound Asset Hound My workmates and I have often joked about Bullshitz but the remainder were new to me! I think this one needs to be printed for the wall at work :D Thanks so much for sharing that!
  19. Dream breeds... Anatolion Shepherd (Verrrry soon :D :D :D) Border Collie Husky Golden Retriever Nova Scotia Northern Inuit Dog (Waaaant, though I don't believe there are any breeders in Australia as yet) Irish Wolfhound Borzoi Pharaoh Hound Edited as more popped into my mind!
  20. I know we're selling them at Petbarn, they fly out the door too! Very lovely looking shepherds, happy and relaxed :)
  21. I usually recommend and use myself Advantix and Interceptor (heartworm plus intentional worms) for when tick control is required :)
  22. “I was taught vaccines were safe and it was implied there had been safety studies done on them before they were used on the general public. They are not safe and there have not been any safety studies done on any of them. THIS. This bothers me more than I can describe. I have had a chat to several local vets as I'm on the lookout for a new one for my new puppy. Nearly all in my area (including 'big brands' like Greencross as well as small private practices) are recommending a two-course puppy vaccine (6-8 weeks for the first and the second and last puppy vaccination coming 4 weeks later) And then every THREE YEARS after that instead of annually. Apart from the Kennel Cough spray which to be effective, is done yearly. I found that very interesting as when my previous dogs were puppies, eight and six years ago, it was drilled in YEARLY. What is the opinion on titres? Should we as pet owners be pushing for vets to have these more readily available? I know many pet owners who have never heard of titre testing an before the start of the year I myself was among them. Is this a good way to make an informed decision on weather a dog needs a vaccination?
  23. Oh my goodness Eddie is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS! Just look at that face, I am totally in love. Also the names... too awesome! Curiosity question: Does Eddie have a normal sounding bark?
