  1. I think you have not met any chickens! :) Chooks are foragers, and a part of a wild/true free range bird is insects/ carrion etc . Our Chooks always get meat as part of their feed .. they thoroughly enjoy picking bones clean , they hunt & eat mice , and they adore maggots/slaters, earwigs & flies. Chooks can be problematic if in close confines and presented with another chook who is bleeding ..as they will peck and peck and eat away at that wound Kangaroo is , IMO not a perfect 10 at all ... nowhere near enough fat .. the rest of it I won't comment upon, as I do not have the expertise . I would like to know though why pig meat is not an acceptable pet food? Ditto to all of that. Had to laugh one day when out at my parent's farm walking around the paddocks and could see a flock of chooks all chasing one poor chicken that was madly trying to fly away... The one being chased had found a dead sparrow and was apparently not sharing
  2. What a raging cow, she sounds like a horrible person with no friends. And a germophobe.
  3. My parents are on 5 acres which is mostly sheep fenced, but they have an area deer fenced around the side of the house for the dogs to stay in when they have guests etc.
  4. In the process of trying to figure out what to do in my garden now - b/f is NOT happy with the muddy, poopy, urine stained patch that we call a backyard. Thinking of making a dedicated dog toilet area, perhaps lay some bark down? Will replant garden, and put a stone path down... Hopefully have a nice lawn by summer *sigh*
  5. I don't personally know anyone that keeps their dogs outside in NZ - except for farmers, and the very occasional person in my obedience class. Probably around 75% of the people I know use a crate, or have at some point, even the new dog owners and people who aren't particularly dog savvy.
  6. Elsie did it once or twice when she was really little. We had a giggle, then redirected with toys. Have seen a very serious tail chaser that was PTS, he used to board at the kennels where I worked. A big GSD boy, would spend hours chasing and biting his tail... Most of his tail was bald and scabby, his kennel would get splattered with blood from him biting it, then chasing it around. Very sad.
  7. Elsie chatters when she is worked up about something, like going for a walk. Apparently lots of Jack Russells do it (she is half JRT)
  8. In off-lead areas like dog parks I don't mind other dogs approaching Elsie - I don't take her to the dog park to keep her away from other dogs, and most people at dog parks don't have a lot of control over their dogs, so I go in with the expectation that other dogs will go up to Elsie. At regular parks I always ask if off-lead dogs are friendly and if Elsie can say hello before I let her go over. I don't let Elsie greet dogs that are on-lead, and don't really let her greet on lead unless I know the dog well.
  9. Well, have done this! Elsie has started agility, rally, tracking and obedience training! Our goals for the rest of this year - Win out of special beginners obedience at Nationals!!! - Train scent before October and enter CD at Nationals - RN by the end of the year would be nice - CGC by the end of the year
  10. I love Dutch liquorice, eat loads of it every time we go to my Dutch grandparents house :D
  11. If you join this facebook group you can watch all of the NZ teams runs from nationals, and their Aussie runs from the few weeks leading up to nationals > Paw Blacks in Australia
  12. Soooo cute right! I don't think there are any in NZ from what I can see Hmmm wonder if I can manage to find one to meet in Sydney when I am there in September... From what I am reading their temperament sounds really neat too... Want!
  13. Anyone on here own one or have any experience with them? Would love to learn more about the breed!
  14. The dog is AG CH Coal Creek's Mailot Jaune ADXG JDX owned by Louise Marsh from New Zealand. He is a New Zealand heading dog, but the heading dogs are listed as a smooth collie and a border collie in that catalogue for some reason.
  15. Is that where my BC/terrier mix gets it from? She just loves to roll in poop and get it behind her ears
  16. I've not found this from my personal experience, of the three sizes I would say the minis are by far the most mellow. I have done a bit of training with all 3 sizes, I think the standards have the most attitude and can be the more difficult of the 3 to work with. Giants are pretty full-on too, lots of energy in a BIG dog!
  17. My sister's dog is terrified of laundry baskets. Whenever someone walks through the house with a basket (empty or full) she freaks out and runs as far away from you as possible, or hides behind someone.
  18. When will results be up? End of each day? Following the "paw blacks" on facebook (NZ agility team) and looks like they are doing well so far!! :D
  19. Ooo Elsie will be very ready by then! :D
  20. Elsie hates getting into cars parked on our drive way or on our street. She is PETRIFIED. She does go in without a hassle, but is very, very scared. No problem getting in or out of cars when we are anywhere else though.
  21. I worked for some people that bred Bullmastiffs, and used to regularly have some Dogues (and Bullmastiffs) in the boarding kennels. I would pick a well-bred, well-socialized bullmastiff any day - I just LOVE their personalities. Happy go lucky, goofy, best friends with every person/dog/other animal... But knew when to look scary! Used to get some dodgy ones in though... really nasty with other dogs. Never really clicked with any of the Dogues, I guess they just aren't particularly friendly with strangers (not aggressive or anything, but quite disinterested).
