What Dog Sports Look Like To The Outside World
Podengo replied to Podengo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Had to laugh at the bikejouring one, I do bikejouring and it's SO much fun - I keep trying to convince one of my friends to join me, she insists it looks terrifying and dangerous (especially when we go through the forest in the dark through the mud) -

My vet is very well off, runs her own clinic and is already looking at moving to a bigger facility after only shifting into the current one a few years ago. She works SO hard though, starts early, works well into the night, is on call pretty much 24/7... Never gets to spend much time with her family or her own pets. That's why she has so many clients, she is SO dedicated... Unfortunately a lot of her clients will not see the other vets employed at her hospital, just ask for her specifically!

I have been lucky, despite having never bred a litter, I have witnessed 2 litters being born and a C-section (as well as a live mating, a transcervical AI and a surgical AI ). I can't imagine how any vet would not have been exposed to that sort of experience!

What Dog Sports Look Like to the Outside World. What Dog Sports Look Like to the Outside World: Part 2 IPO/Schutzund Angry people shouting in German while a large dog bites the Michelin Man’s ethnic cousin. Agility Dog plays on colorful construction equipment while a woman in Lululemon pants and Vibram shoes runs around yelling strange words like “scramble!” and “table!” Obedience Frumpy person struts around with dog staring at them adoringly. Flyball Lazy people yell at dog to fetch ball over and over and over without actually having to throw the ball. Nosework Dog sniffs boxes. Unfortunately, no actual drugs to be found. Weight-pull Owner is desperate to move cement blocks ten feet. Not willing to rent a front end loader. Conformation Frumpy office managers parade at a synergy convention. Dock-diving Loud indecisive gym teachers yelling at Labradors to recreate a Disney documentary. Herding Border collies moving sheep into pens and laser light shows. Treiball Herding for the avid-indoorsman. Tracking A Nature Hike without the nature. Hunt Tests Something with a duck in a box and the blind. The duck may or may not be dead but you can’t know until you open the box which still won’t help because you’re blind. Earthdog People actively encourage their dogs to fix a rat infestation. Must be too cheap to hire exterminators. Barn Hunts Made by the people who hold Earthdog trials and collect money for free rodent control. Geniuses. Altered Conformation A drag show for dogs. Suspect duct-tape is involved. Still allows for an alarming amount of hairspray. Absence of awkwardly framed balls in every picture disconcerting. Canine Freestyle Solo Square Dancing. Bonus points for an ability to sew massive amounts of sequins on to matching dog/human outfits. High degree of unfounded interest in Billy Ray Cyrus. Hog trials Dogs literally bringing home the bacon. Massive amounts of camo make us suspect this might not actually be a real sport and instead a hobby for the weekends there is no Nascar. Dryland mushing People with Balto fantasies and no actual desire to be cold. Possibly insane since they are willing to ride on a cart at high speed at the whim of spitzes. Rally Obedience Human follows road signs to get from point a to point b in the most indirect route possible. Dog looks on baffled but will assist owner in chasing their own tail. Inexplicably accompanied by lots of clapping and kissing noises. Lure coursing Not sure if either owner or dog knows the thing flying around is a bag. Needs further study. Disc Dog gymnastics. College kids that never quite got over being picked last for ultimate frisbee. Dachshund Racing Flying weiners. Sorry, can’t get farther than snickering about weiners. Terrier Sprints Small dogs dashing around over pipes, inside construction fencing while wearing brightly colored vests. Possibly Dog-centric Mario LARP-ing. Carting For people that REALLY wanted a pony as a child, but didn’t actually live with Daddy Warbucks. Not sure why they didn’t acquire a pony as an adult. Suspect it’s due to cost of poop bags. KNPV Some guy just got hit with a dog and then he rode a bicycle. It’s all very Dutch. Bikejoring Also involves a bike and a disconcerting lack of concern for personal well-being. Once again suspect the Dutch/Dutch Courage. Skiijoring What the hell? Didn’t we just see this? Oh, skis. Is -joring German for put your life in your dog’s paws? Dog Scootering This is ridiculous. Use your own two feet already! Cani-Cross Oh…. Ha. Ha. “Own two feet”. I’m pretty sure they already had a name for this e.g. Train your damn dog not to pull you over.

If you check out some Doberman forums there is a lot of information about wobblers around with treatment options and how successful they were.

The end behaviour is what they do at the end of a contact obstacle in the "contact zone" (the different coloured bit at the start and end of the contact). There are a few different contact behaviours that you can teach, but a really common and simple one is "two on two off" which refers to the dog having two rear feet on the contact gear in the contact zone, and two front feet in the grass. You can teach this with any raised surface really, and transfer it to the contact gear later on.

If you're training a 2 on 2 off end behaviour you can practice that at home :)

Gorgeous photos, some of the best photos of puppies that I've ever seen (mine are always SO dark!). Can't wait to watch them grow :)

   I know someone with a beagle in agility, and they are often heard yelling BEAGLE!!! LOL Elsie's name is shortened to "Else!" for agility
-
Elsie does that to my mum, dad and sister whenever she greets them, she usually sees them every other week. It's pretty adorable!

I was actually talking to someone about holding a NZ workshop just yesterday, we would love to do one, I don't think we will get there this year as Steve's calendar is already filling up fast for the rest of the year but next year is definitely a possibility! Awesome! Feel free to message me with any developments, should be able to get my agility club to host a workshop for CHCH :D

Advice About Becoming A Registered Breeder?
Podengo replied to haylz's topic in General Dog Discussion
All great advice -
There were quite a lot of Kelpies running agility at Crufts when I watched it online, and we have a pretty good number here in NZ. I have a friend in the USA (who is from Aussie) that has a kelpie from a cattle ranch there, she said the breed is pretty uncommon where she is.

Trying To Choose A Breed Would Love Some Help Thanks
Podengo replied to Chloe08's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had a Collie Rough named Peter in one of my classes, he was an absolutely gorgeous dog with a lovely temperament... His two young (7 & 9) owners were taking him through classes, he was already well behaved but they wanted help teaching him some new tricks. Just a lovely family, he really seemed like the perfect family dog! -
Lots of people use the NZ dogzonline :)

I've noticed a lot of people with little dogs here train them to run to the end and drop, no 2o2o -
See Saw (teeter) Preferred Performance

The Weesaw is the nickname for the low height seesaw that is now in ANKC agility. The seesaw used to be about double that - the angle used to be the same as the dogwalk. We still use the big see saw in NZ, here are some photos for you BCnut -
See Saw (teeter) Preferred Performance

I'm with you, want all 4 on the board... Thinking of training a down on the see saw. -
I want to get a dremel, my dog is a monster for nail clipping ever since I quicked her :( I'm terrified of doing it again which makes it WAY worse! I get shaky hands and can't decide where to clip, and she pulls her feet away... I only have about 30 seconds to do it before she starts throwing herself around. I get my vet nurse friend to do it, Elsie stands there like a pathetic mess for her!
