Neutering of German Shepherd Dogs: associated joint disorders, cancers and urinary incontinence Link to article Abstract German Shepherd Dogs are important in police and military work, and are a popular family pet. The debilitating joint disorders of hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament tear (CCL) and elbow dysplasia can shorten a dog’s useful working life and impact its role as a family member. For this study, veterinary hospital records were examined over a 14.5-year period on 1170 intact and neutered (including spaying) German Shepherd Dogs for joint disorders and cancers previously associated with neutering. The diseases were followed through 8 years of age, with the exception of mammary cancer (MC) in females that was followed through 11 years. The cancers followed, apart from mammary, were osteosarcoma, lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma and mast cell tumour. In intact males, 7% were diagnosed with one or more joint disorders, while in males neu-tered prior to a year of age, a significantly higher 21% were diagnosed with one or more joint disorders. Inintact females, 5% were diagnosed with one or more joint disorders, while in females neutered prior to a year of age, this measure was significantly increased to 16%. The increased joint disorder incidence mostly associated with early neutering was CCL. MC was diagnosed in 4% of intact females compared with less than 1% in females neutered before 1 year. The occurrence of the other cancers followed through 8 years of age was not higher in the neutered than in the intact dogs. Urinary incontinence, not diagnosed in intact females, was diagnosed in 7% of females neutered before 1 year, a significant difference. These findings, pro-filing the increase in joint disorders associated with early neutering, should help guide the timing of neutering for this breed.

I try not to look! I work in a vet clinic and get it all discounted too! This year Elsie has had a broken metatarsal which has cost me in the region of $600 and we didn't even go to surgery for it  She has had lots of X rays of it, pain relief, sedatives to keep her quiet, got an infection after molesting her foot so had antibiotics and topical cream for it, ate a number of splints and E collars and ate her way through lots of treats trying to keep her quiet. That + osteo ($120) for Elsie, physio for Ping ($250), vaccinations x2, I buy my supplements and food through work for them, put Ping on the microchip register here ($17) and all the bits and bobs like worming and fleaing stuff etc etc

Don't get a pyr! They're mad lol. I like the sound of the Cirnecos, they sound quite primitive and wild which I like! Little a short Pharaoh hound. I've heard there was one Australia, but none in NZ that I know of. Azawakh? They're another fav of mine, but a bit out there! None in NZ that I know of but there are quite a few in Aussie now.

Ibizan Hound? :)

Doing a quick search for the Ruvalan kennel name in the NZKC database I found one dog imported into NZ back in the 80's, a quick search through the progeny line found me some dogs born last year from those lines :)

I like to support locally made so a vote for D-fa coats from me. I have a hand made double layer fleece coat for Elsie that I bought from a whippet person here which is lovely and warm and covers everything, Elsie wears it as pjs at night. I used to have a hurrta coat but sold it as the fit wasn't that great and it kept sliding off her butt. Elsie also has a back on track coat which she wears sometimes, but I feel like it's super uncomfortable through the chest when she is lying down, it's really restrictive... so she doesn't sleep in that one

Cool to hear he's doing well! I have a client that has ED and had stemcell therapy and he is doing awesome! He's about 18 months post therapy and you wouldn't know he has issues :)

I try to work on nails every 2nd or 3rd evening. Baths are for every time they roll in poop, or get a bit doggy smelling... I run an underwater treadmill so the dogs are in there a bit too. Neither of them have a particularly strong smell and don't have greasy coats but I'm very sensitive to how they smell! We get some reaaalllyyy stinky dogs in the vet clinic and it makes me giggle when the owners say "oh I love how this breed doesn't smell" while we're rushing to get all the windows open!

I think there were 4 or 5 attacks in a couple of days, there were a couple in CHCH on the same day
-
Sometimes I feed them on towels in their crate then wash the towels, or just on the tiles then I mop afterwards. Or outside. Can't really avoid the mess when they have big chunks that they wanna drag around. I hate extra washing so usually just on the tiles and mop with hot water and disinfectant afterwards.

Sorted! German Hunting Terrier Happy Ending.

I messaged an Aussie breeder of the breed on facebook -
Ping used to go crazy as a puppy just digging and digging and digging on the couches, we would usually try to interrupt him and do something else. He very rarely digs outside, and I don't think I've seen him dig on the couches for at least 6 months now, I think it was just part of puppyhood for him!

Yeah cut up chicken necks for thrown rewards in agility, and as a high value reward in tracking. I only used them when I was doing 100% raw feeding and didn't feed cheese or dogroll and Elsie doesn't find dried food *that* great, now I just go for dogroll as it's the easiest option.

I sometimes get these treats from my local pet store Venison heart. I like them because they're really easy to break into tiny pieces by hand (I have a tiny dog) and I don't need to get the knife out, they don't smell bad, aren't moist so can go in my pocket and the dogs love them! Sometimes I will use raw mince or chop up chicken necks to train with, but that can get pretty gross! I'm not a strict raw feeder however and usually go for dogroll for training treats, or cheese if I have run out of everything else.
