It is always interesting to hear how others think, if us pro dog people did not hear these comments we would be blindly going about our business just like when tail docking was targetted, and find things changing around us, too late to stop it.

My working dog is scared of the feed bowls. Look out if one moves when he grabs out the chicken carcass! And if I dare to pick an empty bowl up while he is on lead in my other hand, he does not know which way to run first. Someone says it is the shiny distorted reflection of his own face in the bottom that scares him, so now he gets a white enamel bowl. Hope he is happier with that!

I have used Bonnie working dog for years, more than happy with it. I have tried several premium brands over the years without much difference. If I am trying to put weight on a dog I switch from Working Dog to Puppy.

A new breed can be recognised in a few generations, there is other criteria also, such as breed clubs and forming a draft standard. Does anyone know the facts?

Cobbadog is about the silliest name for a breed. But I recall recently in the canine gazette that there would be no ANKC registration of new breeds made up of 2 different breeds with a mixed breed name and no specific purpose. Which I took to mean designer dogs like the Labradoodle. Is that why the change to Cobbadog? I have spoken to Labradoodle owners who are fully of the idea that shortly the ANKC will have no choice but to make them a registered breed, as they are so many generations along.

I don't know about the origins of the video, the circumstances or what happened to the dog, despite enploying heavy use of google. ETA: On a lighter note, google pointed me to several other stories of canine loyalty after their owner's death and in amongst those was a single link regarding a cat: "Cat eats deceased owner". Another reason I have nearly stopped breeding pupppies, further proof people are stupid. First the breeder has sold an entire male to a person already with an entire male (I know breeders who have done this). And what is with the owner flying off the handle and punching and kicking things? Glad he is not my boyfriend/husband he is just not able to handle stress. And why leave them together after the first fight??? I had a discussion recently with a person who is running together 5 dogs, male and female of a dominant breed. I told him without a doubt that when the 3 younger ones get a bit older something will trigger a fight. It may be a bone, a bitch coming into season or simply rushing for a pat first. His response was that it will not happen. Does he think my 30 years experience in the breed count for nothing? I have seen dog fights, and have tried to seperate fighting dogs. An experience I never want to repeat. Never do I put males older than 4 or 5 months of age together, or even where they can get to each other through the wire/fence etc. OMG now I am ranting!

oh Dear! who told you all this? further proof that the general public believes whatever they are told as long as the teller appears to know and can spout out the knowledge in an apparently educated manner. And hunting dogs bred in Australia before working dogs? Plenty of documented proof on the working dogs, so should be able to find plenty on the hunting dog history. I think sometimes people forget their medication in the mornings.

Not many around, you will find plenty of red, but with tan is much more difficult to find. Kelpie breeders in Tasmania very limited. Have you thought about the mainland?

yes a Skip would be a good choice. how about a Kelpie? love people, short coat and generally good with the chooks Cattle Dog needs a little more chook training but still a good robust choice

I have had: 1 I need to return the puppy I bought off you 2 weeks ago as I need the money to pay my car registration. 2 It is digging up my prize rose bushes, (9 weeks old) 3 I am scared of it when as no matter how many times I kick it with my steel cap work boots it still only comes to my wife and kids and not me.

The red and chocolate are different. sometimes the red is a good red, sometimes a poor red, same with chocolate. The coat changes dramatically with change of season/coat, and how much sun the Kelpie is exposed too. The red coat is the hardest to keep in top condition. I have one of each and when both are in good coat the difference is obvious. Not so obvious when the dogs are not togther. When the bitch is dropping coat due to the weather or being in season, she looks a lighter chocolate which could be mistaken for red. The biggest thing to keep the coat the correct colour is to keep the harsh sun off them, most show Keplies are only run out early morning and late evening/night time.

I have a very expensive twin tank bath with heater. I like to drag it out on sunny days and run the waste water onto the grass. The opening is on the same side as the door and where the ramp sits. I would prefer if on the other side so the dogs goes back down the ramp and does not have to avoid the dirty water.

Unless things have change on the Spirit, you may leave your dogs in your custom built dog trailer if you have a signed letter from a vet saying it is suitable for that purpose. Or you can leave dogs in the provided dog trolleys, which are quite good and there are many of them, (do car leavers need the same vet letter?). Dogs were generaly left near the back doors for additional air flow. I have been downstairs at night on the Spirit and it is hot. The cars once parked on board are NOT MOVED, you have your own keys and lock your car. Only you can move the car in the morning to disembark. There have been many reports of dog deaths that I am aware of since dogs have been allowed to be left in cars. Us Tasmanian's who travel often on the Spirit, wonder if the issue is a heat issue rather than a carbon one? A terrible tragedy, one that none of us want to share. My heart goes out to the owner and a hard lesson learnt. Perhpas the Spirit needs to go back to the one rule for everyone, all pets go in the dog trolleys provided. The bonus for us is that if the dog has an upset tummy during the trip, the mess is not in our cars or trailers. In saying all the above I and many friends have travelled several times on the Spirit both old and new and never had any issue at all. The staff have been helpful and caring and the process on going on and off is very quick.

Well the heat has certainly gone off the 'Bluey', I always thought it would have been the first banned/restricted breed. And many dogs bite, many are not excercised or socialised, and many people would not realise their dog is capable under many different circumstances of biting. Jail the owners, things might change a little then.

I was walking my dog once on a bush track, a dog ran towards me out of the bush, it certainly gave me a scare and stopped and gave us the eye. A minute later the owner came around the corner and said 'ít is ok he will not hurt you' I reply 'how do I know that'. Further proof people are inconsiderate and self absorbed.

I was just thinking the exact same thing raz...there was no need to be so rude to the lady, I'm sure she was just being concerned for the health of your puppy. Yes, BM. It's a great opportunity to turn around and talk to people about pet ownership but I question why this person gets stopped so often and asked if the pup is vax'd. sounds like total bullshit to me - either that or the puppy is just too young to be out. Why else would people keep asking? Yes a very rude reponse, but as dog owners it is up to us to educate the 'general public' not further encourage the idea that all dog people are rabid. Maybe the dog owner was just having a bad day.

Simply easier to get rid of the dog. No expense building a dog pen or fencing, and wait you could get another dog and see how that one goes. Welcome to the consumer society throw out anything that wears out its welcome, or becomes difficult. (Am I being too cynical?)

They should be deleted from the 'friend' list. I could not even pretent to like someone who did this. I knew someone (a friend of a friend) that built a new home and decided that the new yard was not suitable for their dog so they had to get rid of it. They choose the land and house - so wouldn't you make it be suitable?? We took the dog as a trial - but it did not work out. The owners did not leave us a contact number, call and ask how he was going, or thank us for trying. These people stock went down in my book. The good news is the dog found a great home. They probably went out a bought a more 'suitable' dog for their new yard
