  1. Hi everyone! The Great Dane Club of NSW are holding their annual Great Dane Fun Day this comming weekend - Sunday the 7th of October at Castle Hill Show Grounds from 10am, all funds raised will be supporting Great Dane Rescue. We'd love for you to come along! Danes and non-Danes welcome!!!
  2. I personaly would never have a dog put to sleep without a Behavioural assessement. Spud may very well be more than happy to live with a bitch and granted he passes a behavioral assessement should be given that opportunity.
  3. I've had a super cute staffy x 10 month old puppy for 4 months, although doesn't sound like long but we're used to having dogs rehomed to their forever homes within 3 months. Plenty of interest just not suitable unfortunately. Although in your case I think some better photos? Just of him with no other dogs, get on his level rather than shooting him from the top, get some video etc? Edited: Just saw your new photos, great!
  4. Sounds like Fly Bite. Take the dogs to the Vet for a correct diagnosis :) http://www.peteducat...2+2091&aid=1565
  5. Although these kids did not abuse or torture these animals. What they did wasn't good but they didn't knowingly abuse or toture them.
  6. Did these people come from a commercial service?
  7. I personaly think it's pretty stock standard dog behaviour and if you don't want the dog killing animals whilst off lead then you'd best muzzle the dog such as a wire basket muzzle that Greyhounds wear.
  8. Nothing to do with the age of desexing. He is what he is because simply that's what he is - genetics. There are many terribly unsound Great Danes with people without a clue breeding them. Height is genetic. Early desexing will keep the growth plates open slightly longer but you won't get any extreme heights.
  9. If you buy a dog the seller has no right to it unless there is a contract just like Harvey Norman can't come and take your washing machine because you paid for it.
  10. With all due respect, this post is to educate those who may send messages in the future as well as now. I do reply to the e-mails, thanks for your feedback.
  11. There are alot of passionate people out there which is awesome but I just wanted to say that if you are contacting people who list dogs FTGH please think what you're going to say to them before sending off a plea to them. We assist in alot of private rehomings, we don't feel the need to put a dollar value on the dog as we're confident in our ability to screen potential homes and we use many forms of promotion for the dog. We list dogs as $0 adoption fees on Pet Rescue too but never ever get any e-mails from people warning us of the potential dangers. I recieve e-mails everyday warning of potential dangers of listing on classified sites, this is one I recieved today: BE CAREFUL WHO YOU GIVE YOUR BELOVED PETS TO There has been a group of .....(call them whatever you want) replying to ads especially dogs for free that are using poor defenceless animals for dog fights and if they don't have what it takes they get muzzled and thrown in as bait in these fighting rings. There has also been instances where dogs get muzzled and thrown in waters as bait to attract large fish If you care for animals don't let this happen , get background checks on potential buyers. THIS IS A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE AND SUFFER STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING.........WE NEED TO STAND UP AND BE THE VOICE FOR THESE ANIMALS The problem is with these types of messages is they come off sounding like you're a crazy........you're warning people that their dog could be used to catch big fish? I mean come on, you're not doing yourself any favours. Try a factual e-mail, that is polite and educational not scare tactics that people will just hit delete and you would have wasted that opportunity. Again, I think it's awesome there's such caring people out there, the e-mail just needs a bit of a tweak so you're getting the message out there.
  12. Inka, puppies are weaned well before 7/8 weeks. They mean sent to their new homes. It's interesting as many Mothers want nothing to do with their puppies at 7/8 weeks anyway.
  13. Goodness! Here's hoping she's in pretty godo condition for 15!
  14. With Great Dane puppies we don't leave them in with adults until they're about a year old. It very much depends on the dynamics of the dogs. If the dogs are goign to rough play then that is a risk for a large growing breed puppy.
  15. Awesome video, we do this with our fosters. One of my dogs says no most of the time, he's not a dog we force ourselves onto and have to remind other people that don't know him not to.
  16. I completely understand the RSPCA's criteria in this instance - it's probably a criteria that has been implemented due to past experience. You can adopt a dog in your home country when you return though yeah?
  17. I find it odd that you've assumed I was condemning you with my 'second hand information' comment. I actually wasn't aiming it towards you at all, because you were going by what your own behaviourist had said, and you weren't condemning other rescues for attempting to help, simply stating that you yourself would not take him on (nothing wrong with that). But the fact that you seem to be quite defensive about it now makes me wonder if you are regretting some of your comments in this thread. My comment was aimed purely at the people in this thread who had nothing to do with Horse who were suggesting that the dog should not be given a further chance. People who were making assumptions on the dog because they once knew a dog that looked like him that attacked another dog. People who have said they 'can't be positive' about the dog or a rescue taking him on. It's one thing to say that you don't have the resources to take the dog on (and a commendable thing!) but it's something else altogether to judge or argue against rescues who are seeking the resources to assess the dog further and allow him the chance to shine. If you had recieved the amount of PM's and e-mails I got about this dog harrassing us about not taking it then you'd feel a bit pissy too. I did take offense at your '2nd hand information' commention because it was not factual. I don't regret it at all, I absolutely would not take a dog into general population foster care with the dogs history, I would however send it to our boot camp - where we send all our behavioural cases if space permits - space did not permit in this dogs case, I did at no time judge any other rescue for trying to help the dog. I stated what is very logical and not emotional that given the dogs history it wouldn't be responsible to put it into general foster care which I stand by. You can get as argumentative as you want but I run an ethical, accountable and repsonsible rescue service. I have learned my lesson not to post about logical things in these threads - thank you for reminding me.
  18. It's wonderful that the dog was given another chance. And just as an FYI - the dog was not condemed on 2nd hand information. There was 1st hand information from the owner that the dog in question was attacking dogs it lived with, it had been dumped with them and they then decided to dump it themselves. The Rescue's that decided not to take the dog did not do so because they did not feel the dog was not homable but more because the resources were not available to them at that time to rehab the dog if it were dog aggressive. I stated publicaly what I knew about the dog 1st hand and stated that I did not feel the dog should not go to a regular carer especially given his size not that it should never be rehomed. It's important that factual information is shared and that the rescue community is not condemmed because they said no. People say No everyday to dogs that display less problems that what this dog was doing.....maybe not as cute as this dog though. I think the condemnation of those who said No is pretty piss poor and another reason that I just typically keep to myself and don't involve myself with other rescues but I bet those who condemmed me would have condemmed me even more if I had kept my mouth shut and didn't share what I knew about the dog and it went onto attack another dog. People had every opportunity to assess the dog themselves, take their own Behaviourist with them or use what information was out there which at the time contricted each other. Perhaps this dogs previous environment was not suited to it, perhaps it was a victim of attacks and not an instigator.....perhaps, perhaps, perhaps either way it's great that the dog got an opportunity with a professional to assess it in a calm environment and I wish it only the best.
  19. Thats fine, I'll touch base with you, thanks heaps :)
  20. We were able to source Horse meat from our local slaughter house, you just need to ask some questions in regards to being 'clean'. Dante ate it and liked it, I had trouble with the smell and texture of it for some reason.
  21. Heya, We're looking for a Behaviourist who services the Mernda area to assess a 2 year old Great Dane's suitablity for rehoming. Has bitten 84 year old owner, appears to be resource guarding although I would like more information before saying yes or no. I'm not asking for a free service. Thanks Sacha :)
