  1. Can I reccomend they walk the dogs seperately to start with, I think they'll find a noticeable difference and it's also easier to work with just the one at a time.
  2. Given its an immune problem I would be looking at that if I were looking into alternative treatments. When Dante had it, only vet prescribed meds worked. I'd be looking at the dogs diet to ensure it is suitable (high quality ingrediants). We recently put together a kibble comparison chart which alot of people get suprised about the ingrediants of some of the 'top' brands. http://www.greatdanerescue.com.au/downloads.htm > Under 'Health Related' then 'Comparing Australian Kibbles'.
  3. Jerry, sounds like you need some therapy yourself?
  4. It's aimed at the Great Dane breed for all life stages www.greatdanerescue.com.au/download.htm
  5. Hi Everyone, We're updating our Owners Reference Guide and would appreciate it if you can let us know which Chiro / Muscle person you use and their contact details / address? Thanks heaps :)
  6. Is anyone else experiencing a descrease in enquiries now? We haven't had any since the new site went up. We are actively using Gumtree now where we are getting a good amount of responses including quality leads.
  7. Thanks Sas, I did a similiar table when I first looked into his diet, but I also included omega levels. I find it very interesting to have them all lined up and to compare them. The vet and I seem to think his diet is working well for him at the moment, and he enjoys it which is nice as he has never been very food motivated. I never looked into VAN, but when time permits I might look through it, as I have read it can work great with atopic dogs. But I never believe what I'm told straight up I also have to research it for myself, a little OCD I think We did VAN and it made my dog worse - but it's a very individual thing.
  8. Heya, we recently did a food comparison for our Rescue and you may be interested to see how your food compares to others - alot of those fillers aren't awesome for soem itchy dogs. http://www.greatdanerescue.com.au/downloads.htm then scroll down to Health Related and then 'Comparing Australian Kibbles'.
  9. I don't care - I touch worse things on the pole on the train.
  10. If the OP can't afford $1,000 for testing then there is no way they can afford Atopica sadly (I'm assuming the dog is not a tiny dog for some reason). Also Atopica does have side effects.
  11. My boy lived on 20mg of Cortisone every 2nd day and he was approx 55 kilos. It wasn't enough to stop the symptoms but most of the time it took enough of the edge off to have some quality of life but he had many flare ups that we had to manage and life was challenging sometimes. When dealing with Cortisone the challenge is to give a dose that isn't high enough to mess with them too much and that's where your Vet helps you out. We did do blood allergen testing and desenstising injections and that was around $500 all up - we didn't do intra dermal as we could not get the dog off cortisone for the witholding period. Different people have different experiences with other lotions and potions, my only advice is don't go wasting your money on miracle cures, we tried hundreds and all they did was empty the bank account.
  12. Apparently its the age, that is what they told me when I rang them this afternoon, Smooch turns 12 in May We weren't sent notification of it so I have sent them a complaint letter and will follow it up with the Ombudsman. If I had recieved the notification I would have just cancelled it.
  13. Im irritated as My 12 year old dog has been insured since we adopted her 8 years ago...never made a claim till this year....$1,400.00....next thing I know my premimums went from $40.00 a month to $98.00 a month without me knowing....of course apparantly they sent me a letter.
  14. In Rescue to me Mature simply means not a puppy.
  15. I had a dog I never bonded with until it was abour 4 years of age and even then it could be strained at the best of times, apart from that wven with all our fosters I have always bonded with them but I think it's reasonable to expect you won't bond with them all just like you don't bond with all people for a variety of different reasons.
  16. 100% that dogs temperaments are genetics that is exactly how different breeds have different breed temperments as per their breed standards. Genetics doesn't quite work in the sense of if Dad has a bad temp then all off spring will, it's the same that if three kids in a family of 7 need glasses or has allergies. You also have to consider why Dad has a bad temp, does he have weak nerves, did something happen to him in his critical socialisation period? Has he been forced into behaving in a certain manner? I definately would not touch a litter from a Sire who had a bad temp, why increase your chances of a bad temp? I personaly believe adults are easier than pups to bring into new homes, they're already emotionaly and mentaly mature.
  17. The problem with this link is it doesn't tell you how to use or how to dilute so effectively it's a bit dangerous. There's also not enough information such as in Dogs Valerian can go either 1 of 3 ways...1) Do nothing, 3) Make the Dog in edge and Hyper 3) Calm.
  18. We use a human one, brought it off Gumtree for $300.00, it's extra wide and extra long. The dog treadmills for Danes cost $4k and aren't as wide as our cheapy.
  19. My dogs hang out in the front yard when I'm home and will occassional bark at people/dogs going by. They're not creating any frustration that would cause them to attack off property as that is simply not their temperament. My Dane is ovbiously a big dog and her bark may intimidate her but she's not doing anything wrong and neither am I as I am home when they are out there and they are not being aggressive. We do have dogs in our neighbourhood who are very aggressive behind fences.....we simply cross the road or go wide if we don't want to deal with them, I suggest you do the same rather than complainign to council which I think is a pretty nasty think to do without first speaking to the owner unless of course you truely fear for your safety.
  20. I don't think anyone was expecting the housemates to be good dog handlers - hence the concern. On the face of it, the idea is one that could have gone either way, with the dog either stressed and treated like a toy for the housemates amusement or the way it appears to have gone, as a positive message for rescue. The friend who wrote the letter is a professional dog trainer and was concerned about a specific incident, and was reasonably happy with their response. This was at the very start of the time that Delilah was in the house so hadn't yet become clear how it would go. And the person who wrote the letter had never heard of AWLQ, being from another state, so had no reason to understand they were an ethical and careful rescue - since certainly not all rescues have the reputation that AWLQ appear to have. meh
  21. Update from her FB Page: Denise and Terry are animal lovers from way back - all there dogs have been rescue dogs. Denise has volunteered 17yrs of her life to animal welfare. They love and respect all animal life so much so the only meat products that come into their home is for their much loved pooches because they understand the importance of a natural healthy diet for dogs. Bossy and Barney are much loved family members who love tearing around their 5 acres with delilah!! She is already settled in so well and has taken a special liking to Denise and follows her everywhere like a shadow! She could not have gone to a more loving family with a mum and dad who have 30 yrs pet owning practice who understand and respect the needs of dogs! And give them lots of love and cuddles
  22. Many many many dogs, especially shelter dogs that may not have been well socialised as pups! I have one lying on my floor right now who would be hiding in a corner trying to disappear into the wall Edit - AWL also said they had the ability to remove her from the house at any time they considered it to be in the best interests of Delilah, which is somewhat comforting :) I'm not sure why so many people expected the house mates who are average people to be experts on canine body language, handling etc. I'm really sick of hearing about this whole thing. She has been loved and adored and I think she and the house mates handled her transtion into the BB house alot better than how most cope with bringing home a newly adopted dog who doesn't know where to toilet and does inappropriate things. It's really quite insulting to the shelter that she came from to assume they didn't know what they were doing. They had her best interests at heart, would have temp tested her to make sure she could cope. Better than sitting in a kennel especially being a working dog - she was also a champion for rescue and brought great publicity. It's not like they sent an unstable dog into the BB house. Let's look at the positive of what this beautiful dog has done for rescue.
  23. We use Kamuka Honey (the 30+ one) with our KC foster dogs with success - much better than cough medicine.
  24. Good Luck with the Vet Behaviourist, I don't think you have any other options.
