New Dog From Breeder.. Something Not Right......
sas replied to mel121's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd definately send her back as soon as you can make contact. There is nothing wrong with saying this dog does not meet the expectations of what you had expected after letting the Breeder know you needed a confident dog. Even my neglected rescues don't behave like that. -
That's scary. Imagine someone giving a neighbours dog, a show dog etc etc a "treat" that makes them sterile!

Waiting On Zeke's Breed Dna Test...
sas replied to Chris the Rebel Wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
Some people...such as myself were curious. You're implying myself and others need 'assurance' - I do not, others probably don't either and of course they love their dog for whom they are. I find it rather odd you wouldn't understand curiousity. Did the service satisfy your curiosity? Many people are invested in the idea that their dog is of certain breeds, and so I think some people have the test done for assurance. Maybe not yourself, but very few people buy a dog that hasn't been advertised as a certain breed or breed cross. It unlikely that most are going to accept news that doesn't fit in with what they already believe. Unfortunately many people don't realise that the only dogs that can be identified by phenotype alone are normally purebred. Sure. -
Without my Foster Carers, we couldn't do the work we do. I am grateful for my carers, we all know when in rescue you give many sacrifices and those should not go un-noticed. I think you need to find a new organisation.

Some ask, some even ask for a photo LOL I don't state nor send a photo. I hear there is a new blood DNA test that is meant to be more accurate that the mouth swab one. -

Yep, I've had a few done....has been 'interesting' This is one of my dogs (the Black one)... This is his DNA test... click here -
Having lost my boy to GDV I agree with this. Definitely no exercise 2 hours before and after feeding time - it's just not worth the risk (loss) Clinical studies don't state this is correct, in fact the 2 main studies conflict on their findings for exercise around meal times. Most Dane owners who have experienced Bloat and/or GDV haven't found that any of the typical theories/precautions mattered....alot of Dane folk seem to agree that if a dog is going to bloat then it's going to bloat and there's not alot we can do to prevent it - having known a number of Dane owners whose Danes have bloated it seems to be the case.
-
Walking your dog after a meal is actually good for them - it's an unfortunate myth that has spread across the decades that you shouldn't exercise your dogs within certain periods before or after feeding.....and this coming from a bloat prone breed owner. Walking aids in digestion. If your dog is likely to have higher activity levels such as running etc. then sure wait 30-60 minutes before and after feeds.

Ive sent you a link to our seperation training program that has not yet failed and also a suggstion to double dose on PetArk calm. In uderstand you're not home all the time but you can start the program Friday night and by Monday if you've given it 100% you should start to see some improvments - not cured...but some improvements. The program typically takes on average 2 weeks to have a nice settled dog again. I'm not sure who you're using as Behaviorists and Trainers but I'd take a good look at where you're spending your money, I don't mean to be offensive but some behaviourists and trainers aren't qualified not suitably experienced. If she cannot come good then I personaly would euthanise, I would not rehome.

I live in Seven Hills also, sadly in this suburb there's not alot of dogs with collars, I see so many out roaming. Hopefully he got home ok.

I wouldn't. After 2 years the dog as far as it knows is your pack. I have visted my previous fosters after 1-2 years and although happy to see me they didn't try and leave with me.....Im not their pack anymore. I think it's pretty unfair to the dog actually.
-
Taping doesn't hurt them or anything like that so maybe ask your Breeder why they're not keen. Some dogs flying nun ears dissapear after teething, some stay forever. Being a show dog I would tape. This is a method alot of Dane folk use: http://www.6stardanes.com/ears.html

Happy Birthday beautiful girl!

But you would be repremanding non barking dogs as well as barking dogs?

Drives me mental. The amount of times someone approaches us when we're with Danes and says "I knew someone with one much bigger" - seriously....who cares...it's not a competition.
-
LOL this kind of thing cracks me up. For some reason some people really get off on the whole mine is bigger than yours. Majority of Great Danes are around 60-70 kilos with the biggins being around 70-80 kilos - I highlyly doubt a healthy (not obese) Rotti would be that much. sas I just noticed the dane in your signature - a Harlequin dane? I have a 'friend' who just bought a puppy and it is an amstaff cross harlequin dane.. He tried to tell me that a harlequin dane was a breed all its own and not just a colour.. I know nothing about this and was wondering if you could clarify for me - PM is fine if you don't want to take this thread off track.. Sorry OP :) PM'd you. Harle is just a flavour Great Danes come in :)

Yeah that was my thought as well.

Many Coloured Great Dane Breeders euthanise White puppies. There is more to a white puppy than just deafness, there are many more defective traits. In Danes, see here: I'm not sure if this relates to other breeds but it seems logical that it would? http://www.chromadane.com/whites.htm

My Lab x is extremely friendly, never growled or fought another dog however when he approaches other dogs when excited his body language is very stiff and his tail errect - this is his "I'm about to take off playing chasey" but other dogs see it as concerning body language which is understandable.

For Those Who Feed A Dog A Natural Diet ?
sas replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dogs are fed a BARF diet and treats made personaly from that protein source, so no commercial crap. I do not follow a natural diet, in the past I have although my dislike of many foods that are good for me didn't help that lol -
Huh? I don't go around people's neighbourhoods seeing what dogs live close by when adopting a dog. If the OP is walking their dog on a lead and has the dog under effective control then they are in the right, not all dogs appreciate other dogs approaching them and that's fair enough.
