  1. Yes, we know that, I've had many of them myself.
  2. Our foster carer has one as a working dog and pet: [email protected]
  3. I don't want to be flamed but I want to be honest. As rescuers we see the beauty in these dogs, although what we find appealing and what the general public do can be two different things. A tan bull breed is really just another tan bull breed, there's nothing defining about their look that catches the eye of someone who may not be familiar with the love of a bull breed.....I hope I worded that well...I probably didn't.
  4. Thanks for those who have touched base, we'll be sending out the formula's once questionnaires are back in :)
  5. So true, I usually like to do a blend for owner and dog :)
  6. I thought Revolution was the one you get for Mange?
  7. Hi Everyone, I'm looking for show dog owners who have an interest in Bach Flower Remedies to trial some new formula's on their dogs. For those not familiar with Flower Remedies you will probably be familiar with Rescue Remedy which contains a 5 flower formula. There are 38 individual essences in the Bach collection that can be custom blended for animals or people. If interested, please e-mail [email protected], you will need to commit to a test of 3 weeks using 4 drops, 4 times per day. The dog you're treating needs to have an emotional area you would like to work on that is relevant to the show ring. I'm just looking for 5 owners at this stage (1 dog per owner). No cost to you just a commitment to complete the test as per the instructions given. You also need to have an positive interest in Bach Flower treatments and be interested to use a blend yourself.
  8. It's a big call to ask someone not to fall I love with the dog and give it back after 9-10 months....not entirely sure it's very fair to the dog either? Either way I hope you find a solution. You wouldn't be looking for a 'foster' - they are for rescue dogs. Perhaps look at the petsitting companies where you pay boarding but the dog lives in someones homes - that way it's a professional arrangement not an emotional one that can go bad.
  9. I'm not advocating management, I'm saying the dog was mis-managed because the dog had been growling at the baby for months and yet it was allowed to be in the same area as the dog. That is mis-management. I'm very sad for all involved.
  10. It's irrelevant where a person advertises. For some reason there is this stigma that Breeders shouldn't be allowed to advertise where people actively look for puppies....makes no sense to me. It's not where you advertise that matters it's how you screen the people that enquire.
  11. Just have to say we feed Augustine Approved to the rescue dogs we feel need some help, many come in emaciated and not in good overall condition and I'm happy with the product. I personaly don't believe in feeding any supplements to dogs who don't need it - feed a high quality diet (one that actually is not because other people say it is or what the packaging says it is) and you most likely won't have to deal with finding supplements but there are going to be those cases such as skin disease that your dog needs additional support. I also like Greenpets daily supplements, I'm sure there's a bunch of awesome ones out there that fit specific needs if you need something specific. I'm very proud to be the guardian of a 13 year old Great Dane who is fed BARF and gets the necessary supplementation to support her. You get out what you put in (in addition to what mother nature gave you to start with).
  12. No supplement is going to deliver you miracle results because miracles don't exist. If your dog doesn't have a need for improvement of overall health then there isn't a need for a supplement. If your dog is in need of a bit of a boost then allow 8 weeks for that to occur. If it doesn't occur then try a different supplement and/or speak with your Vet.
  13. Wowzers! On medication at 11 months, diagnosed by a Vet at 5 months - I've never heard of such thing. Can I ask if you have completed a separation training program? We have one we use with all our foster dogs and it works fine if the human can be consistent with the program. http://www.greatdanerescue.com.au/Docs/separation_anxiety_seperation_training.pdf No supplement is going to help you enough if you have resorted to medication and you don't believe the medication is working and you've allowed the nominated time necc. for the medication to work. If a separation training program does not work then I recommend you contact a Vet Behaviourist - so that's not just a Vet and not just a Behaviourist....a person qualified in both arena's.
  14. I feel sad that the dog was put in a position to make a fatal mistake as the poster has said the dog had been growling at the child for months so the dog shouldn't have been allowed near the child. To me the poster separates the dog from the child or euthanizes although it sounds as though the decision has already been made. RIP old chap. Something I would have discussed with a Vet Behaviourist before it escalated. Something to discuss with a Behaviourist, could be simple pack dynamics and a plan put in place to rectify, but it's sadly too late now as the damage has been done. I know you're hurting and I don't want to be negative but to me this was a mis-management issue and I'm very sorry for all involved.
  15. What being legal, restricting the maximum numbers of say dogs you are allowed to have on a specific property across the state, of course they can. There are council limits in various parts of the country, in the ACT if you're not a registered breeder you cannot have any more than 4 dogs. All they are doing in Victoria is extending this thinking to the breeding community. I meant taking dogs and killing them for simply being over numbers...one would think there would be a warning system / an opportunity afforded to the owner to reduce numbers first.
  16. Why not work with a separation anxiety program to help her feel comfortable when she's alone? Edited: I just see that they can't afford to look after her anymore. Have they approached any all breed rescue groups directly?
  17. He's a Broken Hill speciality te he he ummm Wolfhound x Mastiff x Bull Arab 'type'... He's 37 kilos. Very solid, very little endurance - similar to a Dane lol
  18. I don't normally post dogs here but I really have to introduce you to one of my most favourite foster dogs ever! His name is Russell, he's from Broken Hill Pound, 10 months old and is the biggest boof head. He is such a happy go lucky dog and is so very expressive. Strangely enough we'd have pretty much Zero interest in him, I think he's adorable and cute but maybe his photos don't do him justice. If you know of anyone looking for a couch companion please let them know about Russell! [email protected] He is located in Seven Hills, Sydney. Lot's of photos here
  19. At my recent canine acupuncture workshop the Vet who was running the course spoke about ACL's and acupuncture and that they had great success with acupuncture only for clients who were unable for whatever reason to go down the surgery route....something to look into?
  20. No to artificial grass - gets hot in the sun, can get damaged, exceedingly expensive for the half decent stuff, can get stinky - high maintenance with cleaning. I personaly went with most grass with then gravel on the most used path area - my dogs will toilet on the grass. Pavers or concrete if you don't want grass? All gravel can be high maintenance as well with cleaning.
  21. They won't get at each other if you keep your dog secure. Have the surgery to desex your dog :) Speak to your Vet about your concerns.
  22. I dont wish to sound like a know it all but the kind suggestions regarding exercise, food, zoning.... we've honestly tried it all. She goes to dog day care 1-2 days a week to socialise with other dogs and our local dog parks every day. My husband and I are very active and our dog is taken for daily morning runs and long walks as we notice she is much calmer if she has been allowed to burn out her energy. I cannot imagine putting her down, she's only 3 years old and so full of life, playful and affectionate. She's touched all our friends and family so much since we got her. My father for example always hated dogs (crazy!) and I have overheard him babytalking to her! I really am at my wits end though. I just dont know what else to try besides dog diapers and more drugs. I have printed off the very helpful notes from Great Dane Rescue and there are some new ideas in there we can try especially regarding leadership. We so wanted to do the right thing by adopting a rescue dog and whilst we love her to bits our journey has been very difficult. We didn't even know what separation anxiety was until 2 months after we adopted her and now it seems to rule our life. I've sent you a program that has yet to fail so it's up to you if you choose to use it or not. If you 100% commit to it and you see no improvements in 2 weeks then I suggest you see a VET Behaviourist and consider some medication. I'm not being oblivious to serious separation anxiety, we deal with an extremely sensitive breed and some of the separation anxiety we have seen is just incredible. I'd always suggest working to a program with 100% commitment and then if nothing changes you seek medication.
  23. Her advice: *Obedience school which we did. *Start toilet training from the very beginning, if we can make 4 weeks without an accident we have succeded. If we have one accident we start from the beginning. The longest we've ever made it was 4 days. She had us us try crating but I dont think she understood how distressed the dog got inside the crate when we were not home. Last night I went out for 1 hour and put her in the bathroom in her bed with a gym shirt of my husband's. I came home and she had shredded the bathroom door. We've been told not to reprimand her for accidents as it is like car sickness and childern, she can't help it. It's pretty hard walking inside to find numerous wet spots and worse on the carpet each week though. Well mmm with all due respect I don't think you saw a 'Behaviourist' because a Behaviourist would have given you a program to work through the separation anxiety.
  24. That's actually a myth about eggs being a problem with Cholesterol. Myth: People with high cholesterol should not eat eggs. Fact: Eggs are not the enemy; they are packed with heart-friendly vitamins. Remember the 1980s when we started madly whipping up eggwhite omelettes because we were told yolks were bad for our cholesterol levels. As a result, many an egg yolk ended up down the sink. However, research in more recent decades suggests this was a waste of food. Investigators from the University of Surrey published their findings on the subject in a British Heart Foundation nutrition bulletin in 2009. They examined the results of several different studies on eggs and nutrition, coming up with the conclusion that the humble egg did not “contribute significantly” to a person’s cholesterol levels.
