Prozac Use In Dogs - How Long, Did It Work Etc.
sas replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We had a negative experience on it, the dog got more anxious and was pts. I think the important thing to remember with any meds is they should really only be used in conjunction with a behavioural modification program. We haven't had a SA case we haven't been able to fix with our program (and most Danes come into care with SA), I think you've seen that already? -
We had Leila's done not too long ago, she's still with us 'just' but I'll always treasure the photos.

If your property and how you conduct yourself and look after your dogs is all ok then nothing to worry about. Not saying the OP, don't know them but there is a crazy amount of rescue folk whose properties are disgusting and even how they look after their dogs is disgusting so again if a person is doing everything they should be no drama lamas huh? Next time as them if they would like a tour of your property. Sad to say and people aren't going to like this, many a rescue folk don't want people in their homes not because of trust issues but because their homes are not in a state fit for the public to see. Have been involved in Rescue for 10 years and always have had people come to my home, my home is clean and tidy and I've never had anyone steal anything or intimidate me or another BS reason not to have people to my home.

Wouldn't that be awesome!

My allergic dog lived on it for 5 years and no problems with his liver that were detectable. He died from unrelated causes. Work with a Vet who will manage the dosage i.e. use only what is needed > overuse is not your friend.

I haven't heard of anyone talk about the quality going down. Like any food, some dogs do well on it some don't. A large portion of the Dane community use it for their adults and we're also favouring a newish Australian one called Stay Loyal that I think rivals BH on cost and ingredients.

I have fed human grade roo raw for a itchy dog, no dramas. We've also used Horse and Goat meat too as novel proteins.
-
Rubbish like that is what extremist raw feeders use to scare the masses. You only have to use a little bit of logic to see why it wouldn't be accurate: Spoiled rotten meat from the supermarket, styrofoam wrap and all > Can you imagine the likes of Eukanuba paying for a truck and driver to go around to supermarkets to collect unsold meat? The quantity would be so small it would not cost the cover of the truck and driver expenses. Road kill that can't be buried on the roadside > Just too laughable to even comment on...seriously...Eukanuba sending out a driver to pick up dead bodies off the side of the road or sending an unmarked vehicle to the council's waste department to pick up road kill? Again such a small amount and just such a silly comment. The "4-D's" of cattle; dead, dying, diseased and disabled > Yes, that would be correct...you don't expect human grade meat in most commercial dog food do you? Rancid restaurant grease > as per above for rotten meat and road kill. Euthanized pets > LOL yeah.... Little Bonnie is being purchased by Eukanuba instead of going to landfill.

It irkes me to see fat dogs and then oh shit I had one! I have a little Lab x 2 year old - should be around 15-16 kilos - he is now 18, got him down to 15.8 and now he's put it back on again. What makes it worse is I think he's a Lab x Staffy so naturally has a bit of a barrel shape that when he carries any extra weight looks terrible. 80 grams (40 grams morning and night) of BARF per day and lot's of play and 2 walks a day with off lead running as well. The only way I got him to drop the 2 kilos before was 5 km bike rides morning and night. He does have a calorie overload Monday nights for agility training but is also there for around 1.5 hours running. Man, I wish it were easier, I really do! So I sympathise with those who like myself are trying and are aware their dogs are overweight but will continued to be annoyed at the ignorant. My Vet has commented on his weight before and I think like me was happy to see it come off - eeek don't want to take him back now!

When we did try it, I found that too much of the product was needed for the Danes and therefore they ended up with a powdery meal. I couldn't keep them on it long enough to test it properly because they didn't like that much powder in their food and we went through it way too fast.

My girl whom is 13 has suspected Degenerative Nerve Disease, it first started to show its symptoms by her getting stuck in a sit / falling back into a sit - it's like her body was forcing her to do it and she had no control over it, it then progressed to a drop. We're now at the stage where when she toilets she needs assistance otherwise she can't get back up from the squat. The only thing that is helping is acupuncture which thankfully I give her myself as I can get her stronger for 2 days at a time with it to where she can squat for toileting and get back up again by herself. You could perhaps be dealing with something similar and without scans I don't believe it can be diagnosed 100%.

Cortisone is a very helpful drug and in so many cases is the only thing to give quality of life - the trick is to get the right dosage. I had an allergic dog live on it for nearly 6 years and he didn't pee anywhere etc etc. Usually you up the dose for 3-5 days in a flare up and then lower it and then go onto pulse therapy i.e. 1 tablet every 2nd day. You can also get a tablet that has a lower dose of Cortisone in it because it also has an anti-histamine in it. If your dog has an environmental problem washing him down just with water everyday will help take the pollens etc off his coat/skin. Google Eqyss - I use their Shampoo + Spray / Gel and it's very helpful If the problem is ongoing, save yourself the money and the mental strain and get a referral to a Dermatologist.

My Lab x is OMG Everything in this world is AMAZING and I LOVE everybody and everything but if he's settled down for a sleep he huffs if he is bothered. My elderly Dane quite independent but loves cuddles when offered and will demand them when she wants them. Our new Dane pup is a major snuggler but not overly interested in other people and other dogs - which I love - hopefully he stays that way!
-
We've had them before and they were fine, however a word of caution for owners who have dogs that may bite off more than they can chew, I did have a dog decide to swallow the last chunk of one and was touch and go for a blockage but ended up passing it. We have Horse Hooves now, I ummed and arred for years about them because I read they were too hard for dogs but no problems here at all.
-
I know this sounds strange and I'm not even sure I believe it myself but I guess anything is worth a go...there was an American Vet who made the comment that every bloat case he had seen - the dog need chiropractic manipulation in a specific area (that area I can't remember though!) - could it be worth it just to have the dog see a Chiro and then if it doesn't do anything then you've not lost much money.

Who would have thought there was obedience advice on offer at a dog show lol

I'd recommend you get in your car and take your dogs somewhere else for your walk that you can feel calm.

Blackhawk, Artemis Or Holistic Select
sas replied to fluff1234's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
To me 'quality' is about the ingredients, have a look at the ingredients panels and compare them. For me, personally I want specific meat/s in the first 4 ingredients, I don't want an by-products or fillers, but to recognise what fillers are takes some research on your behalf. All Kibbles have fillers but you'll need to decide what you're happy with and how much of it. I will absolutely not feed anything with Corn and that's not because I'm hung up on Corn being bad for dogs but because in so many cases it's GMO sourced - it's also a completely useless ingredient. I have grown a Dane puppy on ProPlan with absolutely no problems at all, I would probably refer to it as B class, next time around I will use Holistic Selectic Giant because form my research it's the kibble that has the best ingredients and the right ratios for growing a Dane puppy, in saying that Blackhawks new Fish kibble came a close second. Artemis was pretty good from memory but I have learned not to assume the whole line is good just because I've seen the ingredients of 1 bag - they are often different. I wasn't actually that impressed with the ingredients of TOTW when I researched them which was unfortunate as I'd heard so much hype about their ingredients. -
I have 2 dogs with dew claws. 13 year old Dane - never ripped them off or damaged them but does get them caught in blankets from time to time. Does not wear them down naturally and they seem to grow at amazing rates! 2 year old Lab x - no issues with them but doesn't seem to use them, I'm always having to cut them weekly. I have seen a lot of Great Danes with very loose dew claws.

Can Electric Pulse Collars Be Used Humanely
sas replied to snake catcher's topic in General Dog Discussion
With our Rescue we have had experience with Vibration collars and have found many dogs take to them well BUT there are a handful who get a hell of scare, take months to recover from that and can never have them again. An e-collar set at a level that the dog only just notices it would have been more effective and less scary.
