  1. Well the dog has a health problem if it is overweight. Should that vegetarian diet be more carbo than protein, then there are issues there I would say. Would the neighbour consider a Vet visit for a check up or not bother? VM I've never discussed the diet with her, but I think I'll raise the question next time I see her. She's a lovely lady and certainly not stupid, and the dog is very sweet. She obviously thinks it's the right thing for the dog All you're doing is making assumptions.
  2. Why is it weird? There are many many overweight and obese veggies and vegans. Just because those people have made what is usually an ethical decision doesn't mean their diet is healthy. Any diet can be unhealthy. Veggies and Vegans can eat processed foods for convenience and just like non veggies and vegans this can be an issue as well as portion size and lack of exercise,
  3. I think for your own good you would want to xray because otherwise you could feel concern that maybe it wasn't Cancer?
  4. Wow, Thanks for all of the info, extremely helpful.. Will have a read through all of the pdfs when I get home from work. What food would you recommend feeding our puppy when we get her? EDIT: Just reading through the diet pack pdf you posted. It's not really my place to go against what your breeder has recommended although I can tell you what I do/have fed: Canidae All Life Stages Holistic Select - Large/Giant Breed Puppy Blackhawk Fish & Potato
  5. Hi, welcome and congrats on your new baby. I'm familiar with Uncle Albers. When I was putting together the diet info pack I had to contact them as they didn't list the info. It has a 1.6:1 calc:phos ratio and the ratio you want to aim for is 1.2:1 - 1.3:1. Here's the diet pack: http://www.greatdane...ing_a_puppy.pdf If you're new to Danes, you may enjoy this: http://www.greatdane...reat%20Dane.pdf Its ingredients are a bit how ya going with the first four all being low quality: Cooked Meat or Meat By Products Cooked Fish or Fish By Products Cooked cereals and wheaten bran Canola & Soybean Products But hey, if you want to feed something different, have a look through the diet link I gave you and give some options to your breeder of what you'd like to feed and I'm sure they'd be supportive. Also something you may find interesting: http://www.greatdane...ing_a_puppy.pdf Are you on Facebook? If so, join us at the Dane Training and Health group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oz.dane.training.health/
  6. Locate nail trimming on here there is an info pack and video - it's a method we use on all our fosters: http://www.greatdanerescue.com.au/downloads.htm
  7. I say do what's right for her regardless of your emotions and any guilt you wrongly or rightly feel for whatever reason. If you don't know what is right for her then let your Vet whom I presume you trust and respect be the one to guide you through this with their experience of dogs with this condition.
  8. Cool, thanks for that. Yes definitely not 6 months!
  9. Thanks for that. Yes the shoulders and the chest is what I'm concerned about but you don't want to full out there and have a weedy rear either huh!
  10. And there's where the dilemma's begin, there are plenty of examples of dogs that have matured lovely de-sexed before final maturity. Wow, OK, I've yet to see one. In our breed we have 1 litter that is used as an example, most of them desexed early and you couldn't tell.
  11. LOL Who cares, that's what the point is. It's not a difficult thing to understand. Goodness people, it's ingredients, educate yourself.

  13. I thought I'd just go with a 6 month one (which could last longer) so I could back out if necc.
  14. tehehehe it really doesn't take someone with a Uni Degree to be able to read the ingredients on the back of the packet. Education on the topic doesn't take very long, it's not rocket science...really. Well teehee I do expect a uni degree from someone who wants to set up a pet food reviews website. Or they need to state on the website that it is just the opinion on a lay person. It is totally different from us all giving our opinion on a food in here. Then your expectation is unrealistic and I'm sorry to be rude but silly. One would be in class for 1 whole day to understand a label of a bag. Some people seek information and others seek to just bring people down, which are you?
  15. Sure! I don't even seen it as a alternative treatment, it's something that's been used for decades in performance animals. Many Vets offer Laser, although they're usually the ones who also offer other muscular and skeletal treatments. In terms of the science behind it, there are plenty of peer reviewed studies on the use of cold lasers in humans and fur animals. The lasers of yesteryear and today are remarkably different and have more broad range. If you're looking for a miracle cure or something instant to happen, it's not going to. Lasers are often used on treatment of inflammation and you sometimes need more regular treatment than just once a week and this is why for example Greyhound Trainers and performance horse owners have their own equipment. I have to have a giggle at the Vet mentioned above who gave a laser treatment and said he didn't know if it works, so clearly not educated on it and doesn't know the dosage/duration to give different conditions.
  16. Hi Guys, I've previously superlorined an adult Dane before who was 2 years+ with no issues however I'd like to pick your brains on a younger Dane, currently 16 months and I'm looking to implant at 18 months - I was hoping to hold out until 2 years of age but I don't think we'll get that far. Temperament is absolutely fine however this is the 2nd time in 3-4 months that we're going through symptoms of what seems to be neighborhood bitches in season. The process he goes through is usually 3 weeks and 1 of those weeks he barely eats, he sits at the gate sniffing the air and crying. I'm considering having him implanted for his own emotional well being. My concern is that he is a big Dane that I would ideally like to fill out naturally which generally would happen between 2-4 years of age. Do you have any experience with Superlorin and the dog still continuing to fill out as planned? Thanks in advance.
  17. I don't find Dog Rocks ideal because they don't want you changing water daily, it says every 2nd day. I refresh my dogs water twice a day as a minimum due to slobber. We've tried them but they weren't right for us.

  19. That's a given with any food about how the individual responds to it. Canidae All Life Stages from my research has the highest quality ingredients, this can sometimes be too rich for some dogs and because they're all individuals it may just not suit them.
  20. Genetics.... Also the topic of epi-genetics is even more interesting.
  21. I'm not suggesting that the dog would fall to pieces on it. I too could survive just fine on 5 minute noodles but my long term health probably wouldn't flourish vs what I would do on meat and 3 veg if you get my drift.
  22. The only time I would stray from what the breeder has advised is if the food is actually crap. In that case you can do some research and take it to your breeder and I don't think you would find a breeder who wouldn't encourage you to feed a high quality kibble if you could afford it. Many feed low quality because they have a lot of dogs and it's more affordable NOT because its what the dogs do best on because feeding a dog a $30 bag of dust off the floor isn't what a dog does 'best' on. Generally the only time you hear of a dog doing 'better' on a very low quality food is if they have poo issues, and you'd be better off working with professionals in that area to sort that problem out rather than keep the dog on a barely nutritious food that isn't feeding the dog at cell level.
  23. Hi Guys, I'm looking for a Behaviourist on the Central coast to assist a family, can anyone recommend a good trainer/behaviourist.
