I use one of these fence systems with my dogs. Used correctly they are excellent. I can't see why they should be banned in QLD. However they should not be used on such a young puppy. Dogs should be at least 3 months old and training for the dog needs to be done for 2 or 3 days prior to turning the collar on properly. These collars come with a training mode...the collar wont shock in the training mode but will make all the beeps and buzzes to get the dog used to wearing it and hearing the different buzzing sounds. Could be that they have just set it to the training mode? Also there should be a visual barrier that the dog can see, most systems come with yellow flags, but we used yellow marking paint. This is the no go zone for our dogs and they wont pass it. Our boxer recently developed a fascination for our sheep, we used the elec fence to keep him away from the sheep paddock...it is a godsend otherwise there would be injured sheep, un-happy owners and a guilty dog, who may have otherwise been tied up forevermore. If someone came in and removed the collars I would go ballistic.

Yes me too seeing as I've forgotten to watch every single show except one. How does one find out?

Parvo-virus In Yard And Wanting Another Puppy.
flame ryder replied to conztruct's topic in General Dog Discussion
I only learnt that parvo virus survived for many years in the soil a while ago. Just made me wonder...when shifting house how would one know whats been going on there on that particular property in the last 10 years? There's also a bird disease and poultry diseases that pose the same problems. Previous owners or occupiers aren't obligated to divulge such things, and yet it may not have been them but the previous ones before them...and so on. I think sometimes ignorance is bliss. Vaccinate always to be safe...but even then I think dogs can still get parvo, the vaccine is not 100% apparently. -
Building Towns That Are "no-dog-zones"
flame ryder replied to bdierikx's topic in General Dog Discussion
It would be sad if a youngish non dog liking (but maybe not dog hating either) couple bought a place in an estate like that, had a family and a few years down the track the kids wanted a dog. Well it would be out of the question wouldn't it. -
Building Towns That Are "no-dog-zones"

If they really cared about the local wildlife including the koalas they would'nt put a housing estate there in the first place. Biggest risk to native animals is loss of habitat. Many councils including my own and others where I have lived before seem to love chopping down every gum tree and in their place planting European, deciduous type trees. So they lose the lovely native birds too, then everyone complains there are too many sparrows...hmmm I wonder why?? -
but but but...oh no!!! Is it the one where they go to Canada? I really wanted to see that. Manure!!!

Hang on...I'm a bit confused I thought it was on Sunday night?

My dogs are watching this show right now. They wanted to join in when the dogs chased the cat.

I do this with Frontline, It was actually recommended to me by my vet. I have 3 dogs of different sizes and each dog was weighed and the vet wrote down the exact amount to give each dog. I am in SA and no ticks here, so just for fleas.

This is Anna. She was my rescue dog. I had her for 10 years before she died of cancer in 2009. She was a special girl and is very much missed.

If Money Wasn't An Issue, What Would You Have?
flame ryder replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I like where I live but if I won lotto or something I'd like to buy the 80 acres next door. I'd then plant lots of trees and make it a haven. I'd get more sheep and some cattle. I'd build a big new house with a all glass spa room overlooking the property, and have a good enclosed yard for the dogs. -
Ok thanks. Well it was only something I was thinking about...and as I said wont be for sometime yet, probably a 5 year plan. Things may change by then.

Just A Heads Up. They're Back! It's Snake Season Again
flame ryder replied to LizT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Those of you that know snakes...I have a question. We've had a few nice, sunny, spring days and as a result we've seen a few snakes out and about. Then the weather took a turn for the worst and it's back to winter this weekend. So we went for a walk in the bush with the dogs to warm up. OH let his dog run free saying there will be no snakes as it's so cold they'll all go back into hibernation. I kept my dog on a lead cause I reckon once the snakes have awoken they don't go back into hibernation. So who's right? -
I have been considering (in the distant future...not anytime soon) an extended holiday to the UK. Like maybe 8-10 weeks. I can't imagine going without my dog as we love walking and would plan to do heaps. Wouldn't feel the same without my dog beside me. So just wondering, what is the quarantine when coming back to Aus? And is it true there is only one quarantine centre in Aus (melbourne)?

Dogs Found After Long(ish) Periods Of Time
flame ryder replied to BDJ's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not a dog but I had a cat that went missing for 3 months. I'd given up on her and then I got a call out of the blue one night. Out ph number was on her collar and these same people had been feeding her the whole time but were un-able to capture her till that night. I was pretty surprised and happy as I'd come to conclusion she'd been run over. emery what did the pet psychic say? -
If that was his very first time at puppy school I wouldn't be too worried. Some of the others may have been before. Try going back a few times and see if he improves. Don't take too much notice of that trainer....doesn't sound like she has a clue. Just do your own thing and enjoy time with your puppy. You seem to be right on track with everything you are doing

I love Chinese crested hairless dogs. I never intended to get one of these beautiful dogs, infact I never thought that much about them at all. But I remember there was one in the movie 'How to loose a guy in 10 days' this was what led my daughter to want to own one. Next thing I know she brings home a puppy and OMG he's so cute. From that day on I am utterly in love and devoted to the breed and am looking forward to getting another. I love the versatility of them being smaller dogs, that you can pick them up if you need to or they can sit on your lap, sleep on the bed and not take too much room. I love that they have no hair, I love the way they smell, I love that you get to dress them up, I love that they can do agility and are also intelligent enough to do obedience. I love everything about them... But I always have liked to own a bigger dog too. If ever I'm out walking alone I like the feeling of security a larger breed can give me. Also I like to have a watch dog that can offer some sort of safeguard for the property or if I'm home alone. Big dogs make me feel safe. They are a deterrent for thieves. For that purpose we have always had German shepherds or a mix of. But now we also have a boxer as I've always wanted to own one of these squishy, sad faced dogs. With both the big dogs and the small I think we've covered all the bases.

Hi, sorry to hear this but these things do happen. Read my thread 'when is your dog not your dog'. My first dog became my mum's dog because she was with him all day long...and she spoilt him. Penny probably just enjoys the company while you are at work, not much you can do about that cause ya gotta work. Continue to do the fun things like walks, and obedience lessons with her, also you might like to try something like dog agility. Give her special attention when you get home from work, and special treats, like chicken necks (haven't met a dog that doesn't love chicken necks yet). At least she's happy and not alone all day.

I really believe dogs choose their owners as opposed to the other way around. When I was a kid I always wanted a dog, finally my parents gave in and off we went to the pound to pick out my first ever dog. Came home with a little male terrier, was meant to be my dog but quickly became my mothers dog. Then fast forward many years, my daughter buys a Chinese Crested puppy, soon she loses interest but way before that he's mine. The connection was there from the day he came here. It was blatantly obvious to anyone that we had bonded and he was my dog. I always had a dream of owning a Boxer dog. Finally almost a year ago, after much searching and research I bought Bentley a male boxer pup. He is now my OH's dog, they have bonded. He lets Bentley sit on his lap (extremely large lap dog), he has also taken over Bentley's training as I can't train 2 at once. He seems to be more of a mans dog. Although Bentley knows I'm top bitch around here! I also do all the feeding. Love all our dogs but there is a definite 'owner' to each dog Anyone else get this

Whats Your Limit On The Number Of Dogs
flame ryder replied to whitka's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have 3 but considering a 4th. Two of them are big breeds and 1 small. I would like another small one so they can play. -
Oh go on...you know you want to ;) Just like you I am pondering another puppy, but this will make it four. I already have two big dogs and one small. I find the small one wants to play but the big dogs are way too rough. I know Mojo would love a little friend to play with. But for me the breed I love most is pretty hard to find (Chinese Crested).

Hi, I have been reading but not yet posted anything. Very sad, I have tears now. Hugs to you Ms Dani, so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately when we lose our heart to a dog we know eventually we will have to go through something like what you are going through right now....they just don't live long enough and us humans outlive them. You have done the right thing and your dear friend is at peace now.
-
If it was me I'd do it all in one day and get it over with. You might find it hard to get somewhere to stay with a dog and a cat. Unless you have friends or family who will put you up half way? Dog probably wouldn't be a problem but cats don't travel well. Mine spent the four hour trip here yowling loudly most of the way...very traumatic experience for a cat.

Yes you can do agility with any dog. I do it with my Chinese Crested, he loves it. They will adjust the jumps and other equipment to suit his height. You should find a good agility club incorporated with most obedience clubs.
