Any Rescue Dogs In Foster Care
lilypily replied to lilypily's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Silly question I know. How do I get in contact with RWL? Or for those that know, can you ask if 30mg of Trilostane would be of any help? -
I have 12 30mg capsules of Trilostane to give away to a Cush pup in need. I paid $60 for 14 capsules and only used 2. I'm not keen on returning them to the vet as they will only resell them. I'd rather give them away.

Thanks. She settled fairly quickly in bed - ofcourse laying horizontally in the middle of the bed. I didn't have the heart to move her, so I slept all twisted up  '
-
She is fine this morning Like I said I know what effect the ACE has on her (i'v still got some here). Whatever the second agent was is what must have affected her. So all good, i'll just be sure that she isn't given that particular drug again. She's never had breathing problems from a sedation or anaesthetic before.
-
Thanks guys, Powerlegs I think you're right in that it's going to be a long night. She has recently had a fair bit of ACE after her ACL surgery, and yeah that bombed her out for atleast 24hrs, but no breathing issues. I wish I knew what the other sedative was that they used. Her breathing has not got any worse, so that's a good sign. Ok, off to see if I can get to sleep with her.
-
I rang the after hours vet. She is unconcerned, I am though. She hasn't slept at all, won't drink and in between the noisy breathing she is sooking/crying. Her breathing is so fast, her belly is going in and out crazy. The dopeyness doesn't phase me at all. Unfortunately there is no other vet to ring for a 2nd opinion here as the vet clinics combine their after hours service. I'm closely monitoring her.

How long should it take for a dog to recover from sedation.? My old girl was sedated today at 3:30pm for a ultrasound. The vet used ACE and something else (its not written up on my account). It's now 5hrs later and she's totally out of it with her tongue sticking out - this doesn't concern me. Her breathing is very rapid and noisy - this does concern me. It wasn't a GA, just a sedation to make her relaxed for the ultrasound. In the past she has recovered fine from sedations, she is older now though???? Am I worrying unneccesarily?

Hi and welcome. I'm so glad Milo (and Lily) are doing well. Lily do you get your Trilostane compounded? My Lily has had a horrible week. She started Trilostane on Tuesday. She only had two capsules, so one Tues and one Wed 30mg. I rushed her to the vets Thursday morning, she had a sever reaction to the Trilostane. I was so scared I was losing her. Long story short she ended up staying at the vets overnight on a drip and had cortisone injections. The vet wanted her to stay there over the weekend, but I said no. She is slowly getting better and we go back to the vet tomorrow morning. I'm really worried about her abdomen. She has had the classic 'pot belly' symptom of Cushings, but her tummy is getting bigger by the day. Tomorrow morning i'm asking for a ultrasound. Poor Milo, it's hard enough when your baby has one illness, but when there is multiple health issues it's really hard to cope with
-
No i haven't but i think I will. My vet agreed that the chicken tenders were contributing to her symptoms. He told me her levels of cortisol (I should of had a pen on me) but she is definitely Cushingoid. Seeing as her health is actually improving, he said not to treat her. If down the track she becomes ill then we will commence treatment.

UPDATE. It's been 10 days since Lil's diagnosis of Cushings and in that time I haven't been able to contact our vet - he was at a confrence all last week. I have rang today and left a message for him to return my call. I'm wondering if the test is sensitive enough to tell at what stage/level Cushings disease is at? The vet who gave me the test results over the phone just said 'yes she is Cushingoid etc etc'. Because she is getting better She hasn't had a accident overnight for a week now (she was having 2-3 every night for months) She is brighter, the excess drinking has stopped Even her tummy is looking less round/pot belly. I'm not denying she has Cushings, her fur hasn't grown back from her surgery 3months ago. But it must be early stage??????? Since I stopped those bloody chicken tenders her health has been improving day by day. I do think the chicken tenders have played a big role People please please please do not feed this rubbish to your dog!!!!!!!!!!!! Just slice a chicken breast and put it in the oven for 2hrs or so. Easy peasy and natural and you know exactly what is going into your dog. I will update again when i have spoken to my vet. He was very interested in the chicken jerky's.

That's sort of not to far from me. I will keep my eye out. I hope he gets home safely. I'm happy to put up a flyer at the milk bar (it's really the only business around that gets a lot of traffic. It's where all the tradies go for lunch from all the surrounding factories, so it should get seen by quite a lot of people)

Thanks. Sorry to hear about your Lily too . My vet isn't working today, so i got the results via another vet. She was saying not to treat yet ( the med used would be Trilostane). I'll ring my vet on Monday to see what he's thoughts are. I'll head over to the other thread to ask more questions :)
-
Just a quick update. Lily does have Cushings I have my first batch of 'chicken tenders' in the oven now. Hope they work out.

Cushings definitely causes a change in fur growth, their fur doesn't grow properly. I don't do all the vet visits for blood tests. When my Border Terrier was diagnosed, it took months of back and forth and cost around $4000 ... The vet in question then wanted me to take her back every few weeks for blood tests at the cost of $500 each time. I said I couldn't afford that. The meds were very expensive, over $100 each month and she was very well on them. Trouble is she had to have surgery a couple of times and go off the meds, then on a drip - it was horrendous. He asked me if I loved my dog - I was staggered. I had 2 dogs at that time and in just 3 years had spent thousands on their vet care at that vet. I changed vets. My new vet was horrified at what the other vet had charged me and done. At 12 they would not have put my BT through all that. Never mind, I did have her for 4 happy years. Trilostane is so much better! Thanks for your reply. What a horrible dodgy vet! I'm clinging to hope that just because the vet thinks Cushings is on the table and she's been tested, doesn't mean she has it. But if that is to be the case then it's further testing because something is wrong. She is so lethargic and flat
-
Nope, no glucose in her urine so the chicken tenders have been ruled out (still will never buy them again) . So she's currently having the low dose Dex testing and hopefully we get the results on Friday, if not early next week.
-
Thanks Dogmad, i'm sorry about your guys Lil recently had a ACL repair surgery. I asked my vet if that could be linked, he said no, but her fur isn't growing back properly and he said that's linked. Even though it's unlikely i'm praying for glucose in her urine this morning. From my reading, it's not just the cost of meds, there are a lot of vet visits for blood tests. Is this correct?
-
Thanks pers :)

Thanks everyone. Well I got the results and vet thinks she has Cushings She goes back to the vet tomorrow for the day for more tests. Her liver enzyme's are up and so are her red blood cells. Regarding the jerky, I have to take in another urine sample in the morning. If there is glucose in her urine then it would be the jerky and we'd have to wait it out for a few months and hopefully she would recover. In saying that, the vet does think it's Cushings not the jerky. I'll update tomorrow with the result of her urine test. Now i'm off to do a lot of reading about Cushings
-
Thankyou so much wundahoo :) I'll definitely be making these.
-
I will get her blood test results late this afternoon. My vet said the chicken tenders could very well be the cause of her problems. If that's the case he said she will recover. He also talked about Cushings, kidney probs etc: so i'll know more later today. Can someone tell me what are the Aussie made and safe brands.
-
Thanks guys, our appointment is 10:30 tomorrow morning so i'll update afterwards. :)

Oh trust me she is never getting another one....EVER. First off her urine sample showed a very mild UTI. So we did a 10 day course of .AB's, but no change. Vet then prescribed Propalin, the thinking was seeing as she's a near 11yr old spayed bitch it could be incontinence. The Propalin has done nothing. She is drinking massive amounts, no dribbles or loss of control, just 2-3 very big puddles waiting for me every morning. Her tummy is swollen/bloated and yesterday her gums were pale (but they returned to pink and have stayed pink today). So vet again in the morning for blood tests and i'll be telling him about the chicken tenders. I got the shock of my life when I read that illegal antibiotics have been found in them. I got the packet out and yep, made in Thailand. I had never heard anything bad about them. If she is sick due to what i'v fed her I will never forgive myself.
-
If there has been a previous thread about this i'm sorry I missed it. Feel free to link me. My girl is back to the vets tomorrow. We have ruled out a UTI and she is not responding to Propalin to stop her wetting through the night. So i'v been googling and her symptoms match chronic renal failure. Then I came across a lot of information regarding chicken jerky and illness. My girl has 2 JerHigh Chicken Tenders a day (she loves them) and reading the packet they are made in China - where the problems are coming from. Does anyone know about this or had a dog affected?
-
I'v done a search but this is a one off tear staining. My girl has never had tear staining, it was all her crying during her recent surgery that has to led to staining. I'm not keen on peroxide so close to her eyes. Is there something that will get it off? It's not a reacurring problem.
