  1. A Chi x Pom definitely. My old boy was a Chi x Pom.
  2. Thanks :) Firstly I am in NO HURRY. It's not long since I lost lilypily and it's important I find the right match, as the dog will be with me until it passes away. I'm open to travelling Vic wide. I am in Ballarat. I'm looking for a Chihuahua or Chihuahua x. I would prefer a pup or as young as possible. Anything else I need to add? Questions?
  3. If I am in the right section, I will add all necessary details. If not, could someone please tell me where to post? TIA
  4. I know this thread has made me decide that the next time i'm at the vets i'll get her chip scanned. She was chipped over 10 a half years ago and hasn't been scanned since.
  5. Today's paper letters to the editor section was full of letters re: this subject. The majority of people were saying to give the dog back. Some letters were not nice at all to the new owners. I bet they are in hiding at the moment and keeping Mia indoors.
  6. Yes, but the RSPCA as usual are hiding behind legislation to avoid having to potentially pay compensation to either owner. Bet they're kicking themselves that they didn't euthanase, would have saved them a world of hassle. Why would the RSPCA have to pay compensation to either owner? They didn't do anything wrong, and they did try to retrieve the dog and return it to the original owner but legally the dog does belong to the new owners so they can't just take it back. Going by my very old paperwork it states the RSPCA will refund the new adopter.
  7. I'm ultra paranoid. I have never ever left my dogs outside while i'm out. If this man is mental enough to kick your dogs, by blocking access with padlocks, i'd be to scared that he would then choose to throw bait over the fence.
  8. I have dug out my adoption papers from the RSPCA - It is very old 1997 It has a clause "I undertake to give up the animal to the lawful owner, should such owner be discovered" We must have members here who have much updated paperwork??????
  9. Did Mia live in an apartment? Or perhaps she lived on acerage? We don't know, but I think it's fairly safe to say a Kelpie x would not live in apartment style housing. Also with using vet bills as proof of owership, those who use a regular vet can use their vet to ID the dog.
  10. I have no idea these days, but when I was a RSPCA volunteer back in 2003. We'd take people for a walk through of the isolation section to identify their dog. One day we took a lady through looking for her Maltese, it wasn't there. On her way out (she was left unsupervised) she took herself into the quarantine room and came out yelling 'my dogs in there, my dogs in there'. Staff were very suss (this was before pre compulsary microchipping) also the dog was not registered. She returned with photos and luckily the dog did have a disernable feature. Also the way the dog reacted to her it was very clear it was her owner. The RSPCA slapped her not only with the return fee, but the cost of the vet attendance, the vaccination and boarding for the 2-3 days it had spent in quarantine. The woman went skitz, nearly screamed the building down. She got the last laugh though, she returned with a huge bag of 5 and 10 cent pieces. It took staff forever to count it all  Anne, if you don't have a receipt of sale, but the dog is registered and chipped in your name, things like vet records would help?
  11. Oh yes absolutely. I'm living in fairy land to hope that one day the pound would contact surrounding councils looking for a match.
  12. There was a poll in yesterdays paper here. I havent got exact numbers (i'v already used the paper) but they asked over 1200 people if the dog should be returned to the original owner. Near 85% of people said yes. Where does registration come into it? Microchipping gives you 100% legal ownership, but surely registration must mean something????? As sad as it is and I believe the dog should be returned to it's owner, perhaps the lesson here is if you're going on a holiday, don't trust family, friends or neighbours to look after your dog. Pay up and put them in a kennel. Money well worth spent for peace of mind.
  13. I don't know Drummond personally. Is it a rural area? If so how many people realistically would chip there dogs if they live on large acerage/farming communities
  14. This is one thing I HAVE to do. My home insurance is a killer. To many gadgets in this house and I never realised until a lap top was dropped that it wasn't covered So i'v had to seperately list everything like ipod, DS,Wii, laptops, ipads, mobile phones etc: I pay by the month and it's a nasty amount. That's on the to do list this week, find a better deal. I tried looking for a better deal on my car insurance. Yep Real was Real cheap  but would only insure my car for a maximum of $9,400 I stuck with AAMI, yes dearer, but my car is insured for $15,000. I thought it's just not worth the risk, knowing my luck someone would rear end me and write the car off.
  15. This is in my area. The dog was registered but not chipped. I would absolutley give the dog back. It has a loving home of 7yrs. I'd go back to the pound and rescue a poor dog who really has no home. Yes the dog should of been chipped, but I don't think that means she has to lose her dog. As in every news story, there are so many details that we don't know.
  16. Thanks for the link espinay2 :) Another thing for free dog food is Oakham Research. I don't know if it's Vic only or Australian wide? I signed up a while ago and every week (well it's been a bit slack lately) you get delivered for free food, tinned or dry. It's market research. You weigh your pets bowl and record the amount they have eaten etc: It's well known companies, My Dog etc testing out new flavours before they will launch a new product. It's all guaranteed to be nutritionally complete. I do however tend to feed my Lil different food, but it's awesome to have in the cupboard as a back up for tough times.
  17. Yeah it can be sucky, but you get used to it and budget accordingly. It's really only when these unexpected big things happen that you have to do it tough for a bit. It's choice too. As i'v said a few people have told me i'm crazy, that it's just a dog. To me however they are the crazy ones  i'm happy to go without things to keep my dog healthy and happy. My kids go without zero, they get everything. My dear mum paid for me to get my hair done, I asked her 'can I pay a bill with the money?' No she said, this is a gift, you need something for yourself, and besides you look a mess  Thanks mum  It's really made me think about the future and dog ownership. I love love love GSD's and Dobes but I know I can't afford one so I won't get one. Lucky for me I also love Chihuahuas, I think they are a more appropriate choice. I'll get there with Lil, hopefully she remains well until i'v caught up on bills (centrelink advances are a lifesaver to) . Future wise it's looking at pet insurance, is it worthwhile? Or budgeting in a fortnightly amount for a 'doggy account'. What saddens me is so many people out there on pensions or low incomes get stuck in this awful position. Pet ownership should never be a burden. All the dogs in pounds and there are people out there who would make great owners but simply can't afford it. That sucks!
  18. I cannot believe the big hearts of some Dol'ers. I'v had a few pm's offering me money and a care package. I politely declined all offers (pride and all that) but I am so so blown away by others generosity, and I hope I haven't offended anyone. You are all beautiful people! I didn't start this thread as a 'woe is me'. It just made me think of others out there who make sacrifices to keep their dogs healthy. Sort of a 'what do you go without?'.
  19. Yes I have got stressed over this. I have everything budgeted and it works really well. To be late paying a bill is just not me. It's life and major unexpected bills should be expected. I was just thinking, hey I can't be the only one who has to 'do it tough' at times due to ridiculously high vet billsl.
  20. Yep my kids and pets get everthing they need. I recently had my hair done. It was a present and I wanted to spend the money on a bill, but the gifter insisted I spend something on myself for a change, still felt guilty though.
  21. Yeah disability pension and yes I live pension to pension too. My vets not so nice re: giving accounts (despite the fact i'v been a client for 17yrs and have never not payed on time - but the manager has taken a liking to me and she gives me accounts) . I will definitely look at chicken mince. I'm lucky that my children understand that this christmas will be a bit quieter than previous years. They love Lil just as much as me. Also wow 7 dogs. I feel bad for saying i'm having financial trouble with just one.
  22. It's hard to when people don't get it and say things like 'you're crazy, I wouldn't pay that, it's time to pts'. Ummm no it's not time to pts. With medical care she is living a very happy life. It's just the relentless cost of vet care Everyone who knows me knows Lil comes first. (Even my kids have the odd whinge about 'you love Lil more than me' ) You know things aren't good when your weekly meal plan consists of toasties and things like scrambled eggs. I just take pet ownership seriously and whatever needs to be spent at the vets gets spent. It does stress me out thinking of the future and the ability to have another dog (no new dog here until Lil passes away, she gets jealous) I'v rang the elec company and all good, i'm now on a payment plan - will have to do the same with the gas company. I don't know of any co ops in my area, but certainly can look into it. I don't have a crafty bone in my body I could have another go at a vegie patch. My last attempt was a disaster  I don't want this to be a whinge thread about me. I'll get there :) I just think it's terribly sad when plenty of people have all the time and love and do everything right by their dog and it just comes down to the almighty dollar.
  23. This won't apply to everyone. Just wondering how other low income earners/non workers manage there dogs and associated costs? I'm not allowed to work, for medical reasons. My dog is 11yrs old, so obviously things were very different back when I got her as a puppy. I was a vet nurse and it was awesome, everything was super cheap. When I changed careers still not a worry with a good income. Now things are very different for me, with a limited amount of money and a strict budget. My dog is like a child to me, so still gets the best of everything. She has ongoing health issues now and I have officially stopped counting the vet fees at $2,500. For me this a HUGE amount of money. I will always spend what I have to, that's just how it is. I am so broke it's ridiculous. The bills are piling up (i'm pretty sure this week i'll recieve the final notice for electricity dissconnection) christmas is coming. I'v cut down my groceries to save some money. I hate being behind in bills, social life? Forget it. I'v actually had several people say to me 'is the dog worth it'. My answer is 'hell yes'. Now i'v had my whinge  Are there others out there who do it tough in other areas of there lives in order to pay for there dogs? Also is pet insurance worth it? (Not for now obviously) but if pet insurance isn't worthwhile I think i'll have to seriously consider in the future, not getting another dog That thought tears me apart, i'v never not had a dog in my entire life. But being realistic if you don't have the money for if/when things go wrong healthwise and a supply of continual money for ongoing conditions, then it's unfair on the dog. It kinda feels like you have to be rich these days to have a pet.
