Thanks for some great advice. It's still early days so I'll see how she measures up against the lab show standard. If she fits the bill then I might put her in some shows and see how she goes, otherwise the guide dog option is a very good one. Was only thinking about this last night. I guess i won't know for a while whether she had the right measurements etc. To be a show dog as she is only 17 weeks. It's all along way in the future for now. But it's very interesting finding out all this information :-) so thanks again to everybody who has given me their advice

I got my lab from NSW 2 months ago. the flight to Perth was only about $230 and she coped fine with that. I had a hard time finding breeders with pups in Perth and that's why I went interstate. Sorry, that doesn't answer your question at all but goodluck in your search. Getting Olive was the best thing I ever did so I am sure no matter where you get your baby from you will have an absolute ball raising her :-)

I had this problem with my lab pup. She would start crying and banging on the laundry door at about 6. She had already peed by then so i knew that wasn't re problem. I alfoiled the laundry window where she sleeps. This has completly stopped the problem. The first morning we did this we slept until 9.30!!! We were expecting her morning call and didn't set an alarm. It obviously won't help if she is outside but if you had her in the laundry for example u could try :-)

That's great advice. Thankyou! She is on the mains register, and I am already looking at watching a lab show next month. I will take her along and hopefully speak to some of the friendly breeders, and like you suggested get an unbiased opinion as to whether she is breeding quality or perhaps just the best pet baby in the world :-D

Lovemesideways, i wouldn't think about breeding because me dog is 'pretty' as you put it, I said gorgeous... Meaning she is beautiful, and smart and full of character. She is easy to train and loves being with her family. She also loves exploring and chilling out. Don't be so quick to judge. She is 4 months I am just exploring my options. She came from two beautiful parents who were not show dogs but were used for guide dogs and many of their pups have become guide dogs since. So why would I have to showherin order for her to have a great litter of pups? I dounderstand why people show their dogs but I don't think it's necessary in order to be a breeder. If she conforms with the breed standards, and has a lovely nature then surely she could produce the same pups whether she had a show status or not. Anyway this is all just a dream at the moment, one that may never come in to effect. I just wanted a little information and advice so thankyou to everyone. Thankyou got nuthin... I will definitely take you up on your offer and pick your brains re. Breeding :-) I like to get as much info as possible before making any serious decisions and this will definitely be one of the biggest decisions and commitments I ever make, so if I do go down this path with my beautiful Olive you can be sure I will do it right or not at all! :-D

Hi all, does anybody know of any good puppy schools in Perth. I am in balcatta so somewhere around there would be great. My pup is a 17 week old lab and she has not had any proper training as yet but better late than never! :-)

Hi. I am just reading all these posts. My Labrador pup is 17 weeks old. I bought her from a registered breeder in NSW. She comes with full papers for breeding. I would like to breed from her as she is just so gorgeous but would i be considered a 'backyard breeder'. Of course I would use a stud dog with papers etc. But yer was just wondering whether it is frowned upon if you breed from a pedigree that has not been in shows etc. What is the breeding etiquette in other words? Thanks :-)

Yes the mornings are the hardest. We inorned Olive for an hour this morrning. Itfelt horrible, but she did eventually stop crying. Then when we woke up we couldn't stop cuddling her :-) drifter, your little pup is too cute. I love lab babies. :-)

Hello stonecutter. Olive is on the main register. I paid the extra from the breeder to have those papers. We are not going to show her though. I wish we could because she is an absolutely stunning lab but I just don't have the time orthe knowledge to do it all... It's a bit of a full time job isn't it? We are hoping to breed. Maybe just one or two litters depending on how it all goes but she is still very young so we have time. Yes keeping her locked away will be hard. I am a first time puppy mum so I hope I will know when she is on heat so I can keep her imprisoned! Hunny, we got our girl from NSW and we are also in WA, in Perth! Where are you? How are you finding it all? Does she go through the night yet without wee'ing?

We just got a black lab. Well she is 4 months old now and just gorgeous. She came from a breeder an both parents had very low scores. I don't know much about this yet but I wanted to be on the safe side. I am glad I did because she is just the most amazing and beautiful little girl and we are thinking of breeding from her. But if you just want her for a pet im sure those scores would be ok. You could always look around at other pups with lower scores?

Hi Hunny, thanks for the reply. Goodluck with your pup. Labradors are the most gorgeous little babies. I am definitely biased, but have only had ours for two months and now can't ever imagine life without her. What colour do you have? Would love to see some pics! I tried putting some of olive but they are too big and won't work :-( I think I will try putting her out. She is very independent and happy enough snooping around when she is outside, and witha big bone she shouldn't get up to too much naughty stuff! Otherwise the earplugs might just be the way to go :-) Thank you all for your very helpful comments and suggestions. I actualy bought Olive from a breeder on this website but never really paid any attention to the forums before but am now finding them very useful :-)

Hi Persephone, Olive does this with every meal. Eats a bit, walks away and comes back later, she is a bit of a grazer, rather than a gulper. Do you still think I should take it to two meals a day? Hi Christina, I know what your saying about letting her sleep with me, and I agree it would solve the problem, but I don't like the idea of pets in the bedroom over night. It might sound mean but I'm just not keen on it. She has a very comfy bed and lots of soft toys to cuddle. I know it's not a subsitute for her mum but I think if I took her in to the room to solve the problem now she would still expect it later and there is no way I'm having a huge lab snoring away next to me every night hahaha. I think I'll try leaving her in he laundry but giving her something to munch on and hopefully she might get the idea over time that crying and bashing the door down does not = freedom haha. Fingers crossed

nope, laundry hamper is on the bench in the laundry. The toilet is in the laundry, seperate of course and the door that leads to the outside. If we put a crate in it would take the whole door way up and block the cupboard and probably the washing machine. As it is we have to lift her bed up when we use that door. We really do not have room for it.

also she is still having 3 meals a day. But she is not food crazy, unlike most labs. She will take a few bites and run off to play.

Thank you all for your replies. Olive has a very warm bed, plenty of blankets and toys, also keep in mind that this is in the morning, usually 6 or 7 so would not be the coldest time of the night. We really do not have room in our small house for a crate, if we did have the room we would definitely use this option. She has already urinted in the laundry before we get her, so I doubt she is crying for the sole reason of going to the toilet. Also i do not like to leave her outside completely unsupervised at this stage. She is still very young and I am worried she will start digging/ chewing when she is not being watched. I might try the kong idea though, I think this might buy me an hour of extra sleep. Still doesn't solve the problem though but perhaps she will grow out of it when she grows older. has anybody else had this problem?

Hi all. I am new to this and am hoping I can get some good advice on how to stop my 16 week old lab baby crying and trying to knock down the laundry door in the morning. She is a very well behaved pup most of the time and she goes to sleep with no problems at all. But in the morning, after maybe only 5 or 6 hours of being in there she starts crying, barking, yelping and what sounds like punching and scratching,even tap dancing on the laundry door. It is incredibly annoying and starts usually about 7. I know this might sound like a reasonable time for her to be up but I am a nurse and work shifts and sometimes need a bit more sleep. Please keep in mind that she will usually be toileted and then put to bed at about 12 or sometimes 1. I have tried ignoring her, taking her out and putting her back to the laundry and also bringing her in with me (I know this is bad) after the toilet. What I would really love is for her to stop all this business in the morning and wait patiently until about 8 for me to wake up and give her attention. Is this to much to ask? It does not appear she is anxious about being alone, but rather that she just wants to be let out. We have not gone down the crait training route as we simply do not have enough room in our laundry. She also gets plenty of attention every day. She has daily walks, heaps of play and lots of cuddles. She is in no way a neglected pup, but yer would just love to have a morning without my door being almost knocked off it's hinges. Thanks in advance for your help Amy
