Anyone know where is can find a nice red leather collar that won't cost a fortune. I like the k9 ones but they only come in black :-(
-
Brilliant! Thanks, I'll get one with my tax return. I have currently been banned by my girlfriend from buying anything more for olive other than food :-( do u think the 5m or 10m would be best for an inquisitive 5 month old? I'm really happy to hear about the swimming situation. She just loves the beach, I'm assuming running around on the sand is better than grass or concrete right?

Pet Urine Odours In Carpets - How To Get Rid Of Them
Olivebaby replied to bernym's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't know how it would go on carpet but I used biozet laundry powder on my tiles and grout. My puppy was constantly peeing in the same place and this worked wonders. I don't see why it wouldn't work on carpet though. -
Can I just say I love this forum. So many knowledgable people with great advice. Thanks so much :-)

Ok thanks. Will stop the backyard fun. She does love the water but was hesitant to take her there too much in winter. Lots of cold salty water = lots of shampoos, which I know isn't good for their skin (I do use an oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner) Any good suggestions for a long leash for recall. Currently have a 10m nylon one which is bulky and annoying and really painful. I would love to take her to the park more but she is not reliable enough yet to be let loose with other dogs around.

So I should stop it all together? :-( she loves it so much and she was a born retriever but I guess if it's bad for her I'll stop. When can I start again?

Thank you all for some very good advice. Will take it on board. My girls parents both had excellent hip scores and wanted to keep the option of breeding open later if she works out. But was just a little worried that her environment may ruin that. So thanks again :-)

Is a 20 min walk once a day as well as a good off lead run at the beach or park once a week too much for a 5 month old lab? I have been reading a lot of conflicting information lately. Also we play fetch on the pavement in the yard (about 5 mins a day) can that possibly damage her growth? We have raised decking that she will run up and down (about 2 stairs) not much we can do about that though so hopefully that won't be harming her long term. Our yard situation is far from ideal and our bloody floor boards are too slippery for her to sit properly on, so her legs always sit wide. Im just having a stress that she may be damaged later and it will have been my fault and completely preventable :-(

Good Obedience Trainer In Perth.wa
Olivebaby replied to squee's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am also in peth, but NOR and would love someone to assist me with my recall. My lab is 5 months and if we let her she would run straight up to another dog with no hesitation. For this reason she is always on leash unless we are alone. She has very selective hearing and and I would love for someone to train me so I can train her. Any suggestions? -
I know my mums dogs are not well socialized. When poppy was a pup my mums husband was terrified she would be eaten by a dog or taken by a hawk lol! As a result she never really left the house and scampers away anytime olive goes near her. In saying that if I was her size and my big black oaf of a dog came running at me I would be scared to! I think time out might be a good idea. Although I don't think these dogs will ever be best mates, but it would be nice to take her there without all the stress!

I have a question regarding this subject. I have a 5 month old lab that is full of beans and loves to play. I was just at my mums who has two king Charles cocker spaniels. They are small and farely timid, particularly the female. Olive runs up and wants to play, they growl or yap but she will not back down and wants to keep playing. They get quite stressed out and it always ends up in Olive sitting outside while mum and I catch up. She is like this with my dads two labs as well but they are bigger and dont care quite as much. They let her lick and sniff with an occassional back off growl. I am not sure whether i should physical restrain or just seprate them altogether. I know this is my fault and I should be doing something different so would welcome and suggestions on how to teach her to leave the dogs alone when they have told her to. Thanks in advance :-)
-
Yes I think I'll look into it as well. I know she will be able to do anything I teach her. It's me who has to learn. I have never had a pup before so this is all very new to me. Thanks for all the great suggestions guys.

No I think that would be perfect and so cute. Are agility type tricks bad for physical development at this age?
-
I can't check out the video yet either but will be sure to do have a look soon :-) One thing I really need to work on is recall but it's so fricken hard to do this at the park on a long lead when every single dog wants to sniff Olive and get her all excited and distracted on her lead!
-
Thanks heaps I'll give them a go. Olive is pretty awesome she is a fast and keen learner. We still work on these tricks everyday of course as she has not got all of them perfect Eg. She won't die on the 'bang bang' compand from a standing position only when she is already down. Any suggestions on that one? most of the time though she does exactly what I want her to do. Its amazing how connected you can become with your pup through training. It brings me so much joy to see her do the right things, and she always looks very pleased with herself as well :-)
-
Hi! I know this doesn't really belong here but the tricks sections doesn't look like it gets used much. I you want it moved please feel free :-) My question is, what are some good tricks I can do with my 5 month ol Labrador pup? She LOVES to do tricks and I don't want to fall behind but have run out of new ideas. She sits, stays, drops, rolls over, plays dead, crawls, spins, catches balls, finds her ball when hiding (even on a bookshelf... I'm very impressed) she shakes, gives 5 and 10! So I'm pretty much out of age appropriate puppy trick ideas. If anyone has a suggestion and how to do it I would be very grateful. Also she is clicker trained. Well kind of. I'm still getting used to the whole concept :-)

No experience with dogs but I'm a paediatric nurse and give it to the kids at work with asthma etc. Just remember pretty much every single drug has possible side effects and especially when not used correctly. The drug company needs to tell you these for legal reasons but I doubt it's ever stopped anyone who needs it from using it. Anyway sorry, not very helpful but I have never seen a child have adverse effects from prednisolone (that's the name we use) :-) Good luck

Hi. I use a standard cup size measurement that came with my RC. So almost a full once twice a day. Doesn't seem like too much for me for a growing pup with heaps of energy. But I know the BH pieces are smaller so I'll have to reconsider how much I give her once we get it and swap her over completely. Im going to take her foo away after 15 minutes and see how she goes. Thanks all
-
*sorry I meant home* will take all your advice on board guys. Thanks,
-
Sorry, wasn't really considering the chicken wing as lunch. I though you meant kibble. she only eats about 4 or 5 a week so it's not always a regular thing. Depends if I'm him or not :-)
-
Yes that's what it might be. Gosh there are so many variables! Anyway I'm not very concerned more frustrated that she won't eat her food, and it's not exactly cheap!
-
Hmmmm maybe? She did lose a tooth the other day. But in saying that, she has NEVER eaten a full meal in one go. Even when we first got her and feeding exactly the same as the breeder suggested she still only ate about half. Anyway I'm getting my BH Monday and will just try giving her less as tollersowned suggested. Maybe only 1 cup a day and see how she goes with that. :-)
-
Tollersowned- I don't feed my girl lunch. She gets kibble morning and night and about 2 sardines in the morning. And a few tablespoons of barf at night. Gayle- I use the flaxseed oil because She is still on 80% RC and about 20% BH. I get my bag on Monday. This is a special oil with heaps of good things for dogs. It's the melrose one. Have you heard of it? Even if I am feeding to much, which I don't think I am. It still remains that she does not eat it. I put her breakfast out this morning. No sardines. She saw me. Took one bite and walked away. She hasn't gone back since. Anyway it's fine. She is not underweight, she looks slim but definitely not ribby and she still has lots of squishy puppy skin around her neck, which I love :-D
-
Ah ok hahaha. Big difference in size then. Olive is probably 15kg now at 5 months. It could be a little more, I have not weighed her for a few weeks. Now I definitely think she should be eating more. your 4kg pup can happily eat a cup of kibble and mine is struggling to eat 1.5cups!!! Well at least I know she won't ever be one of these fat labs. :-)
-
Well I mix it with flaxseed oil and either a small amount of sardines or barf. So probably not hahaha. How much does your dog weigh? I'm confused because apparenty I am suppossed to be feeding my girl twice the amount you would give an adult dog when i swap to BH. That is about 3 cups seems too much to me. I haven't swapped her completely over yet. She is still mostly on RC and barely eating 1 1/2 cups a day over two meals. She looks good though so I probably shouldn't worry.
