  1. I recently heard from amypie (OP) how this breed name is meant to be pronounced, and I would bet there are a certain number of pure breed enthusiasts that still don't know every dog name under the sun and their pronunciations. So instead of laughing at people not being able to pronounce it and leaving it at that, maybe take the opportunity to perhaps educate some and tell us all how it is actually meant to be pronounced! I have been exposed to a lot of different breeds since being on DOL, but some of them I wouldn't have a clue on how to say until I have heard someone say it in real life. For the rarer breeds, such as yours, there aren't many opportunities for people to hear the correct pronunciation in real life Out of all the posts you could possibly chastise you pick on the one that clearly indicates I've tried to educate the people involved and they refuse to believe the correct pronunciation? I spend my life trying to educate people about the correct pronunciation, it's odd that you would come to the conclusion from my post that I don't. I don't take offense when they get it wrong, but I do find it amusing when they think I'm the one in the wrong! No intention to "chastise", yours got picked out because of the breed name and my recent experience with it. I was merely stating that I heard it said in real life only about a week ago and was surprised at the pronunciation (so much so that I don't think I'd be able to repeat it!), so thought it might be an idea if you maybe told us all HERE how it is pronounced! Because your post didn't specify. Had I not heard it spoken the other week, I would have read your post and gone "oh, that's how I would have said it, but now I am still none the wiser on how it is meant to be said!" I have no doubt you educate people in real life, but your post had the opportunity to educate the many reading this thread. Your choice I guess if you want to take it Sorry if you felt chastised. My mistake then. It seemed hostile, but I've clearly misinterpreted it. To anyone still wondering: Schipperke = Skip-er-key.
  2. Skip-er-key. Just imagine someone skipping over a key. Random, I know, but it works!

  4. That's very sweet. I wonder if the blind dog is the product of double merle mating.
  5. Two stories. I was doing an obedience trial with one of my dogs a few years ago when he decided on the 'return to heel' that he would stop behind me, cock his leg, pee on me and assume position on my left as if nothing had happened. The judge sniggered 'praise your dog'. The other was worse. I met my future brother in law for the first time, years ago, and I was showing him around the house when I started to notice curious items scattered about the place. Mortified, I came to the realisation that the dogs had gotten in to the 'period bin' and not only strewn the contents everywhere, but had a good 'tear apart' and 'chew' session in the process. There was nothing said, but my introduction became quite hurried and flustered - he pretended not to notice. :o Oh wait, one more. I took my sister's old fluffy for a walk one day when she was still around (RIP you gross creature) and she found this very long, half dried strand of dog shit and decided to have a chew. It was all sort of bound together with hair and other unidentifiable matter so when half of it went down her throat and the other half dragged along behind her in a long line it was impossible to remove. She was not bothered and continued to chew and run about passing many horrified strangers alond the way. I had a much more sensitive disposition at this time and kept dry retching audibly, which did even more to turn heads. As if this wasn't enough, she then ran under an electric fence to nip at the heels of some horses in an adjacent paddock. The horse owners were there for feeding time and less than amused. I attempted an awkward apology between retching.
  6. My Kelpie already has his Christmas Present. A five thousand dollar metalically enhanced leg. My Schipp puppy already has hers as well: I haven't throttled her yet. But in all seriousness, I'm looking at some Nina Ottosson toys and perhaps the Kong Wobbler at the moment.
  7. I work in the pet industry and my colleagues insist I'm pronouncing the name of my Schipperke incorrectly. Apparently it should be pronounced 'shipurk'. I also had two separate people in one day last week call up and pronounce the breed name of THEIR OWN DOGS as 'daihatsu' and 'jujitsu'. Daihatsu being a Japanese car and Jujitsu being a Japanese martial arts. Yes, they had Shih Tzus - a Chinese breed. Also, the council keeps pronouncing Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog and anything with a blocky head as 'Pit Bull'. ;)
  8. Anyone who has stated their breed essentials and proclaimed that their chosen breed has it but has neglected to tell us what their breed actually is, want to clarify?
  9. I think you've stumbled upon something very interesting, Mita. I wonder if a DVD featuring dogs playing, high in positive vocalisations and perhaps with some kind of accompanying product that emitted a variety of interesting scents would make for a good Canine entertainment pack.
  10. Great replies everyone! Mine are: -Biddable and Intelligent -Athletic and agile -Not in-your-face with affection -Strong nerved -High drive And one more for fun: -Black with pointy ears! My Kelpie fits all of these and my Schipperke pretty much does as well, only the biddability part is sometimes in question as she can be very mischevious! I wouldn't mind a Border Collie (short haired) or a German Shepherd next.
  11. Name five attributes that comprise your ideal dog type. Which breed/s of dog do you have and do they hold these? If not, which breed of dog would you like to have to fulfill this ideal?
  12. 1 x 5.5 year old entire male Kelpie. 1 x 7 month old Schipperke. They live half the time with a 6.5 year old desexed male Weimaraner X Lab and the other half with a desexed female 7.5 year old Chihuahua X and a desexed female 7 year old JRT x. The two older littlies are constantly reprimanding the Schipp for being a nuisance, and the Kelpie begrudgingly tolerates her (poor thing ) The rest pretty much ignore each other, although the two older littles who grew up together will play on the rare occasion. The Weim X spends his time grumbling at my two or ignoring them.
  13. Am I the only one confused about the term 'dog park'? Are we talking about parks specifically designed for off-leash dogs, or any old park people can use that doesn't dictate that dogs must be on lead? I do not allow my dogs to approach any other dog in any situation without the express permission of the owner. I do have similar concerns though, as I take my dog to off leash parks to play ball with him and there are some types of dogs he doesn't like. He is not on lead but he is well trained and I call out to others to please keep at a distance if they have one of these dogs. He will never approach a dog he doesn't like. I do worry about what might happen if the owner has no control over their dog, but my dog needs running time.
  14. These are supposed to be good. http://www.ppwholesale.com.au/MENDOTAleatherrolledcollar.html
  15. What an incredibly moving piece. Husky sounds like he was a magical dog. A companion like that as a child would certainly pave the way for a life long love of dogs. RIP Husky.
  16. Very interesting. Thanks for your responses. With my dog, the plate starts much lower down. In a very unusual case, everything was perfectly in tact except he'd ruptured all the ligaments in the lower tarsal area. This means that only the lower part of the joint was fused and fortunately this doesn't account for much of the flexibility in the joint. The specialist thinks that he should regain fairly normal movement once the healing has taken place. He will have to spend eight weeks in the cast, with weekly changes.
  17. I've read they were considered a 'terrier' back in the day. Personality wise, they seem like a mix between a bull breed, a herding dog and a terrier. Determination, courage, prey drive, agility, intelligence, gameness and tough as nails with the humour of a ADHD afflicted clown.
  18. Aside from comments on whether she is a fox or a miniature German Shepherd, the most common other observation by strangers is that she has a 'big personality'. They really do! :D
  19. The certainly have high entertainment value!
  20. LOL. I don't like the term 'stubborn' I prefer 'determined'. If she is focused on doing something it can be hard to deter her. Fortunately that level of focus and determination seems to be able to be efficiently channeled into other more productive areas most of the time.
  21. Thanks. Why aren't these dogs as popular as JRTs? I don't get it.
  22. I do too, that's why I got one. There really isn't any coat maintenance. I don't really think of them as a fluffy breed, they might have thicker coats than a JRT, but it's not long and doesn't shed a ton.
  23. So he was declared a dangerous dog for simply being a dog. Very sad.
  24. Congratulations! A little and a big Belgian! How cute. I also have a black Kelpie and she looks just like a miniaturised version of him. I honestly can't see the whole running off and never coming back thing ever happening with any of the ones I've met. They seem too loyal for that.
