That's a GREAT idea!

He fitted back in as if he never left, i had two kids by this point and was a bit nervous, he did have scars and no teeth and severe athritis so not sure what he went through, but yep he resumed his spot on the lounge and was still the same gentle well mannered/trained dog that went missing. Unfortunately he wasn't with us long enough upon return due to his athrititis and cancer he was given his wings a few months back now at the age of 6 I'm sorry to hear that you lost him so young, but at least he got to spend his last years/months with you.

Oh, you edited your post. Do the statistics reflect all the animals surrendered to pounds? I'm talking about genuinely lost dogs, not surrenders. I'm not sure what accusations you're talking about. I'm happy to discuss alternative views in a polite manner.

I am glad I was able to bring you some humour, Anne. Hopefuly our future conversations can be more productive.

I didn't know that. That's not a bad idea either.

I know what you mean. Although it might help those who are already responsible to have safer places to go.

I was reading a topic in the news section about citizens being rewarded for collecting dog poo by going into a lottery. (Great idea!) It made me think of other ways we could reward responsible dog ownership. What if we were to have a system whereby dogs trained to a certain level and temperament tested received a pass to certain privileges. For example special dog parks, beaches, doggy restaurants etc. They could be given a vest for identification purposes. Sketchy idea that I've not thought through, but if effectively implemented the system might go some way towards giving people with well trained, sociable dogs safer places to go. Thoughs?

This May Help With Dogs Scaling Fences?

What a wonderful idea! My only concern would be how sharp the edges may be? -
Wow, that's a useless tool all 'round!

Usually what happens is if you contact your registered database with a chip number, they can check any other databases in the state for you. If it's registered to an interstate database, they may not be able to check the details but they can give you the name of the database so that you can contact them directly. It's usually a pretty sound system, but as mentioned earlier, complications do arise. Sorry, in pounds the normal course of action is nothing like you describe and I am getting a little tired of you effectively telling me to suck eggs on this. When a stray dog comes in the staff do not check every database. As for accusing you of lying, you are being a drama queen. I asked you what world you lived in because your explanations and comments were not realistic and were incorrect. You've made your way through this thread patting people on the head with smilies and condescending agreement comments if they say something you like and you have passive aggressively reacted to any comment that isn't to your liking. Your statements about lost dogs being returned, and chips, are based on opinion and you state them as fact. My comments are based on FACTS and after many years debating, researching, working in and being an advocate for change in animal welfare issues I find your posts offensive and your accusations way off base. I'm not talking about the pounds checking every database. I'm talking about the microchip registries advising on where the chip is registered to. If pounds don't bother to follow up on this, then that's a shame. (< smiley face = attempt to convey friendliness). As for the rest, if you choose to see my disagreements as passive agressive and my agreements as condescending then that is your interpretation. I've tried to use emotes to better portray my tone, but obviously if people want to read something a particular way then they will regardless. So far I've been called naive, a drama queen, a liar among other things. I know this is the internet and people love to get personal, so it's no surprise. However, I am not the topic, so now that everyone has expressed their grievances, can we please get back on topic?

In the second video you can see how appropriately he balances himself against the g force. Amazing!

Some cats, like some dogs can be very intuitive, can't they? It's really lovely.

Do you think she might have dementia? There are some drugs that can help with this if you contact your vet. What sort of cat do you have? There are some pretty easy going purebreds you might want to look into if you were to get another cat. I hear the British Shorthair is a bit of a quiet, couch potato, but there are others as well, like Persians. Although, obviously there are differences in temperament within a breed as well, so you might have to be careful to pick the right cat! She is a blue rescue moggy, & she has always been nuts. The constant miaowing isn't new, it's just more noticeable now that she is older & only stays in and around the house (yes, I'm afraid she is allowed out ) . Aside from sleeping more and venturing out less, she doesn't appear at all old, so I'd be suprised if she has dementia. Still it's worth considering. Her "sister" who we adopted at the same time as a kitten was a cross Persian tabby & she was lovely (she died a few years ago), so I have had good past experiences. If I got another like her I'd be happy. My sisters PB Burmese is divine too. Hmmm, maybe I will get another afterall... It doesn't take much swaying! Burmese can be very demanding, but they sure are entertaining! Persians are really lovely. I'm a terribly lazy groomer though, so it would have to be an exotic shorthair and I believe they're a little more lively.

It happens all the time. I could write a book about the emotional reunions I've witnessed. It's very sad. I've never really been able to understand the mentality myself. The vet nurse who picked up my rotti boy fell in lvoe with him and his personality, When my husband called me to say that i wasn't going to work today i was going for a drive to pick Zeus up i burst into tears i didn't believe him. I got to vet and nurse brought him out and he dragged her to me he remembered me and i him tears all round. He would of had a lovely home if he wasn't chipped :D Incredible story. How did you find Zeus' behaviour following all this? Did he settle in as nothing had happened or was there an adjustement period?

I think the discussion has mostly been sensible and informative. However I find your response above Blackdogs incredibly disrespectful. Anne has contributed her opinion based on her experience, that's what DOL is about. Either respond with an actual discussion point, rational argument or question, or politely ignore posts you just don't feel the need to respond to. Obviously sarcastic or antagonistic responses, even when accompanied by smiley faces, are just annoying and pointless :D Actually, she called me a liar and I've found her responses to be surly and rude. I, however, responded in good humour. It's time to lighten up, people! :D I know no one likes a newb that undermines the collective authority by having an opinion, that's the way internet forums work. However, that's a great song. I recommend we all go back through it, read the lyrics, hold up our lighters, sway to and fro and RELAX. The internet is not serious business! I can see how responding seriously to antagonistic remarks at all is just encouraging the throng, so this will be my first and last bite. Now, back to topic.

Best way to get over a fear is to confront it. Hopefully you'll get some good interaction with some of these breeds at training.

I hadn't heard that one before. I thought microchip scanners could scan all chips. What's the point in having a microchip otherwise if pounds can't scan them? I'm sure pounds won't go out and buy all the scanner brands available and then try each one on every dog!!! Can someone who works with microchips and scanners confirm this? The scanners we use scan all chips. I have not heard of selective scanners.

Microchipping has been compulsory since around 1996 in NSW and Ive only recently acquired a scanner .We found all different ways of ensuring we didnt get the chips and the pups mixed up including painting some part of them with different dots of nail polish, coloured ribbons, shaving a spot etc .Some worked better for some breeds than others. In my case if the mothers spots the nail polish she will yank the pup's fur out to get rid of it, the collars get pulled off via other ltter mates and their Mum etc .Shaving is O.K. if its only a short wait between chipping and going - thats why I bough the scanner. Mind you Ive had girls in one place that should have been boys too - not my muck up but the vets. Chips are definitely not foolproof. We've had our own issues with them. Can I ask how much the scanner was? That's kind of cute, the mother pulling the polish off.

Ahh, I see. Well I suppose if they don't make a secret of their practices I might give the ring around and compile a list for everyone. I'm glad we agree that there are differences between rural and city pounds.

Well that is great! However, I wasn't suggesting that it was. Just that revealing the pounds I deal with would disclose my location and I would prefer not to do that. You don't seem to mind disclosing your location so I thought you wouldn't mind disclosing the pounds.
