  1. I had no idea it had been posted previously. But I have to say there are usually a whole ton of things you could do before shooting a dog in most situations. People are too ready to dispatch dogs. The owner should always pay, not the dog. In short, I don't agree with you. I think we need to incorporate more 'heart' and way more 'head' in these types of situations. ETA: If you have already seen and discussed this video, feel free to skip the thread, there are no doubt some here who haven't seen it and would like to discuss it.
  2. To me, it looked as if the two dogs were attempting to play with the Beagle but the Beagle was vocalising out of fear.
  3. I would be interested to get people's opinions on whether this officer's actions were appropriate. ETA: If you have already seen and discussed this video, feel free to skip the thread. There are clearly some who have done neither and would like to. If Troy deems it inappropriate he will delete it.
  4. ACE is not normally recommended for storm phobic dogs. From my understanding it relaxes the dog but it may still be mentally alert and distressed by the storm but unable to react which can stress the dog even more. Valium is the drug that is usually recommended for storm phobia. Although it is an idea to try it first because in some dogs (as humans) they can become more amped up. I would like to know where you get this information from. I have heard this before, but have not found a reliable source indicating that this is true. Most of the vets I speak with disagree on this point. It is a drug that is specifically and regularly prescribed for anxiety issues. That was interesting. Thanks for the post. It's odd that many people who have used this for noise phobias report their dog has slept soundly through the storm. I don't purport to know more than this Dr does, and steer clear of Ace because I have heard these reports from lay people, but in practical application Ace seems to work fairly well in a lot of cases. Do you know of any other sources supporting this position that don't reference the above posted source?

  6. Hah. Valium can increase appetite significantly in some dogs. I know I recently used it with one of mine and he became a food maniac, running around the house desperately searching for crumbs and trying to jump up on the kitchen counter! He's normally a very well behaved dog.
  7. Is she too nervous to eat? If not, get the tastiest thing you can find and start feeding it. Incorporate some obedience if you can. If she's ball motivated, try that, etc.
  8. I'm judging her, and I have every right to judge her. The woman used "GAP is full" as an excuse! What a misleading thing to say . Dishonestly trying to present herself as a person that didn't have the option of putting the dog in the program. She is a miserable low-life that doesn't value dogs unless she can make money from them. Disgusting. That's my judgement and I stand by it. What do you mean by 'misleading'? Do you mean that GAP never reaches full capacity?
  9. Um people who breed show bred greyhounds are already doing that. Racing greyhounds around a fenced in track after an artifical lure is a modern day event. Been happening less than a 100 years and the breed is many, many hundreds of years older then that. Sure my dogs wouldn't win a race but they haven't been bred to do that. They are hunting dogs, not race dogs. Does everyone who shows their dogs hunt with their dogs as well? There's a reason why many breeds have split into show and working categories. For most ANKC show dogs, there is no test of working ability. Same for greyhounds, very few dogs are actually allowed to hunt legally. eta some of the race track failures could have been very good hunters. Racedogs need to be fast enough to win a race, doesn't mean they would make a good hunter. Well, whatever the form takes, Greyhounds were bred for speed so retaining this quality through measurable sports would assist to retain this trait.
  10. Oh give me a break. It's not a slum in Haiti. It's the USA. Bloody disgraceful that a cutsie little propaganda film has been made about street dogs in LA - Nawww how wonderful that she's looking after her puppies who will probably get flattened on the road - when our vets and vaccines are going to developing countries to try to combat the street dog problem - good on them, too. Maybe they should start with sterilising Peta idiots in LA. I came away with a very different interpretation. I didn't see the documentary as promoting street dogs at all. I thought it adequately showed some of the harsh realities these dogs face.
  11. I would classify Los Angeles as first world because of the Nation it belongs to, though the conditions seem to be pretty poor.
  12. This is how Whippets were raced back in the day. Although I think there was a bit of 'on track' betting between owners. My view is that there should be no off track betting, no professional trainers and owner/trainers only. Let it be a hobby and once the dogs aren't seen simply as a walking source of money things would change. I agree.

  14. I was surprised myself. I had no idea that strays were so prolific in first world countries.
  15. I think it would be beneficial to take the money out of the industry. Sure you can race a greyhound, but you cannot bet on it. It's no longer a commercial sport. This way we can preserve the athleticism of the breed without involving people who are motivated by things other than the dogs themselves. Would there be an initial loss of life? Potentially, however, there is currently an ongoing loss of life that will be eternal and a propagation of a disposable mentality. More lives wil be lost with the ongoing existence of the GH racing industry than without it.
  16. Glad at least a couple of people were also interested. I was starting to feel like a dog freak. The German Shepherds have wonderful, natural structure. If they all looked like this I would have purchased one instead of a Kelpie.
  17. You are welcome. I agree, I myself was quite taken with the structure, athletic physique and intelligence of these dogs.
  18. I tried to be a deviant and it wouldn't let me - it just came up with a search with official copyright sites! Replace the asterixes with suitable letters.
  19. Ok, so part two isn't out yet. If you're a deviant and you want to watch part one you can do so here.
  20. Not in the showring, but working stock someties have white markings.
  21. "Street Dogs of South Central is an 85 minute documentary film directed by Bill Marin and distributed by Lions Gate in association with Animal Planet. Narrated by Queen Latifah, it is a nature documentary depicting the lives of stray dogs on the streets of South Central Los Angeles. The story follows the life of Elsie—a black labrador mix—and her struggles in raising her pups on the streets of Los Angeles." - Wikipedia. Anyone seen this?
  22. I was surprised at how advanced things were back then. In the second viddeo. I like how the chosen family companion was a bull breed.
