  1. I was going to mention this breed as well. I usually value intelligence and aglity in breeds, but I've recently had the pleasure of meeting several Bullmastiffs that have stolen my heart. What beautiful, sensitive, affectionate and loyal animals they are. I've recently added them to my want list.
  2. The breed is shown in Australia by the breed clubs, points are awarded by a combination of events. There you go, I wasn't even aware they had a breed club for these. Our breed club never awarded points and so until our breed was recognised by ANKC we couldn't have any champion titles and therefore no champion bloodlines. So does anyone know where to find out about their breed council and their shows. I know someone that is looking at one of these pups with "Champion Bloodlines" but it all seems a bit fishy to me. ETA: the more I search around about this the worse it seems. No requirements to register a kennel name with the breed council. "Just register the name when you have your first litter of pups" (Taken from the American Bulldog National Breed Council forum I just found) No code of ethics, no minimum age for breeding, no restrictions on consecutive litters. It may not be highly regulated, but that doesn't mean there are no ethical breeders.
  3. There are reputable American Bulldog breeders around. ANKC isn't the be all and end all of purebred dogs. A purebred dog is a dog that breeds true to type. This is an example of a seemingly reputable American Bulldog breeder: http://www.oakparkbulldog.com/ . They are registered with the American Bulldog Registry Downunder (ABRD) and have even been awarded by the Master Dog Breeder's Association. If you want an American Bulldog, just try make sure they are health tested. One of the things I like about the American Bulldog is that many breeders trial for function, not just form. ETA: My mistake, they were MDBA nominated, not awarded.
  4. No problem: http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkEDOFhA7Pw Delete the space after the colon.
  5. Looks slighty German Pinscherish but it could be anything, really!
  6. The footage is mesmerising, isn't it? Glad you enjoyed it.
  7. I think a Cav would be ideal. Would they consider a Shih Tzu? Long hair, but they would have the ideal temperament. A well socialised long haired Chi might also suit.
  8. It doesn't sound silly, I wondered the same thing.
  9. I'm loving these videos you're posting, blackdogs! At work so can't watch this now, but I'm going to settle down in front of it tonight I think. It looks like it's movie length :) Thanks for the reply! Was starting to think everyone must have seen this one! It's long, but very interesting.
  10. I apologise in advance if this is a repost, but I hadn't seen this one before. This documentary talks about the evolution of the canine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvwI2fHNgFQ
  11. Standard Schnauzer or German Wirehaired Pointer have the looks and intelligence she's after.
  12. Just a thought: are you set on a long haired breed? I tend to find that people are less intimidated by fluffy dogs, even when they should be. I've seen some very large Rhodesian Ridgebacks - these are pretty low on the drool factor.
  13. I've seen similar studies done in the past, but not this one.
  14. You're right about Schips being funny. My last dog and my other current dog can be pretty serious. I wasn't prepared for what utter clowns Schips are! At first I was a bit put out by it, now I love it.
  15. I find people's likes and dislikes when it comes to almost all things kind of interesting. Human diversity is fascinating. :)
  16. I agree with this, to some extent, but there are breed characteristics that don't suit me or my needs. Sure, you might find individuals within those breeds that break from type, but genrally speaking breeds have attributes that or may not be suitable for one's individual taste or needs.
  17. I'd prefer to leave it up to the reader as to how they answer the question.
  18. Which is pretty much what I said above. What are they?
  19. What is your favourite breed and why? What is your least favourite breed and why? I was pondering this today and was having difficulty selecting a least favourite because there are generally things I like about all breeds. So I chose to interpret the question as 'which breed suits me least'. You can interpret it any way you like! My favourite (this is partially though, because I've not owned some of the other breeds I admire) is the Kelpie. Good looking (in my opinions), agile, driven, easy-care coat, intelligent, biddable, versatile with few inherited diseases. Kelpies suit me best. My least favourite the Afghan Hound. Although they might be intelligent they are not terribly biddable. Their high grooming needs really turn me off, I'm a very lazy groomer. High prey drive. Although this can be a good thing when it comes to training, training is not something I would be doing with an Afghan, I'd find it too frustrating. I do like their personalities though, I've met some that I really loved. They're also extremely beautiful! Your turn. :)
  20. These never get old! Working line GSD Dutch Shepherd Koolie Short haired working line Border Collie ACD Rottweiler Kelpie (current dog) Schipperke (current dog) (sensing a theme here?) Boerboel Cane Corso Bullmastiff Central Asian Shepherd Chihuahua JRT Irish Wolfhound Fifteen's not unrealistic is it? Now to win the lottery.
  21. Seriously adorable! I particulalry like how the animals have carefully arranged themselves in order of size.
