  1. Can we get some pictures of Grumpy ans Mac, please? :)
  2. So are you saying that never, under any circumstances (including fright such as backfiring car engine, thunder etc) will your dogs leave your front yard? What sort of dogs do you have? I don't believe there is one dog that will always be 100% reliable. I've read about a person's Border Collie - 100% reliable according to the owner, until the day it suddenly ran out in front of a car because it believed it saw someone it knew across the road - it died. There's something to be learned from that. I'd rather take my very slim chances than live in a bubble. Each to their own, I guess. So long as you're clear that you're not actually taking any chances, your dog is. You're risking the life of a creature unable to make that choice for itself. I also let them run loose at offleash parks with other dogs. They occasionally swim with at the beach where they could drown or be eaten by a shark. Sometimes they jump over hurdles and risk injuring themselves landing incorrectly. If only there could be more legislation to prevent such dangerous activities.

  4. They are legally obliged to in Queensland where this incident happened. But there is no law against standing on your front lawn and swearing like a bogan. It's only a matter of time in Queensland.
  5. Greytmate - where did you find this by-law? Not having a go - had a look and could not find anything. Here is the Brisbane local law. http://services.dip.qld.gov.au/locallaws/data/postamalgamation/CCBRIS/00_Animals%202003%20LL_res16-06-09.pdf It also needs to be read in conjunction with the subordinate local law. http://services.dip.qld.gov.au/locallaws/data/postamalgamation/CCBRIS/00_Animals%202003%20SLL_res16-06-09.pdf This is the QLD state law regarding menacing dogs. http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/qld/consol_act/amada2008244/s89.html The dog could be declared menacing, because it acted in a way to cause fear. It was having a go at the OP. It isn't acceptable to have dogs loose in unfenced front yards in Brisbane, and the law has been written so that people cannot use the excuse that the dog was on their property. It must be confined in a way where it can't leave the property, and this owner didn't do that. The menacing dog legislation allows council to act against people that allow their dogs to scare other people from their property. Better to be able to have a problem dog declared menacing than it is to wait until they cause harm. I guess you could flip this around and say that the OP's reactive dogs acted in a way that caused fear as well. That law is very open to interpretation and is therefore equally open to abuse.
  6. My dogs are always out in my unfenced front yard with me. If you told me to leash my dogs on my own property I'd tell you to f### off as well. Perhaps if you'd politely apporached me to discuss your concerns I'd be more accommodating, but ordering someone to do something they are under no legal obligation to do is ridiculous.
  7. A Schipperke definitely fits the bill, but beware as they are very high energy.
  8. We all know that people don't always own the types of dogs one would expect when thinking about stereotypes. I'd be interested to hear which breed you believe would suit your image (or perceived image) best and which you actually own. This isn't meant to be taken too seriously, it's just for fun. :)
  9. What about water? You could set up a clam shell with toys and a sand pit with hidden toys. A rope with a rag on it hanging from a tree makes a great flirt pole as well.
  10. I was recently told not to take any little dogs on the Million Paws Walk as they wouldn't be able to make the distance. I guess they haven't met my Schipperke. Or indeed, Lily: ETA: For lovers of good music - The second song is Young Blood, by The Naked and Famous.
  11. Completely agree. "Child burns self on stove!", "Child falls down stairs!", "Child eats old food and ends up with salmonella!". Accidents happen.
  12. I think it's a pretty bad idea to kennel strange dogs together; there's nowhere for them to escape to if they feel they need to. I wouldn't even kennel my own two together, but would rather have them side by side instead. I'd be happy for my two to run together in a larger space, but I'd prefer they wouldn't interact with strange dogs. Having said that, if the kennel people know what they're doing and the customers would like their dogs to have playtime with another dog, I see no problem. I just think they need to be aware of the potential risks and sign a disclaimer.
  13. Glad you all liked it! Makes me want to run out and buy a decent camcorder.
  14. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! :)
  15. Schipperke: One. And while I'm doing it I will break the speed of light (and every destroyable object in the house with my little pointy teeth), chase three cats and bark 7,000 times at a single oblivious sparrow.
  16. Interesting. They are going to determine lineage for your dog on the day of a show. Obviously a lot of research into your dogs parents is going to occur there. I wonder how many might match the standard but are not actually pure. Yes and I could make my own registry for three legged dogs and can provide pedigree papers. This doesn't automatically mean that two of my new breed will produce three legged pups. As such even though there is a registry and pedigree papers provided doesn't mean they are a pure breed. At least with ANKC or FCI registries there is a governing body to ensure the registry is maintained to a certain standard. As such the pedigree papers issued via these bodies means the dog must be pure as its parents must also be pure and so forth throughout the dogs lineage. If pedigree papers are issued "on the day" providing your dog meets the standard according to one individual, then there really isn't a guarantee about the purity of the dog. This approach only serves to further confuse members of the public as to what actually constitutes a pure breed and pedigree papers, but then isnt that what the breeders of designer dogs have been trying to do - confuse the uninformed so they will believe whatever you want them to believe. The American Bulldog isn't a designer dog. They have bred true for a very long time and are recognised in other countries. All registries can be criticised including the ANKC. It doesn't mean that ANKC breeds are substandard.
  17. Wow, there are some really nice collars on that site as well. Thanks!
  18. Thanks! Having a look now - there's something realy nice collars on there. :)
  19. My friend recently bought a couple of collars from Karma Collars which is a company that hand crafts leather collars. I was admiring some of these collars online - they are not cheap, but very well made. I was hoping to get something special for my little critters, but I would prefer to buy something Australian. Anyone know of any good sites? I'll go international if they have something I really like, so feel free to post those sites too, if you know of any good ones. Also, anyone got pictures of their special collars? I would love to see what you have (preferably modelled by your dogs!) :)
