  2. Do you want past prefixes? Like what you can find by looking at the earlier generations on current pedigrees!
  3. Quite the contrary. Dr Robert Holmes the Behaviourist advocates mouth stimulation and I would expect as many different textures as possible would be beneficial. Most certainly, it will depend on the temperament of the dog that you start with. If your dog is running with cats already, I can't see why a stuffed toy kitten would make any difference. Dogs respond to more than something fluffy, and in the first instance can tell the difference between the smell of their slob filled toy and a real animal. I think you're underestimating you dog. My dogs certainly know the difference and so do the cats that have strayed into our yard.
  4. Should have the opposite effect. Mouth stimulation is very important for dogs to counter aggression and instil proper socialisation.
  5. Yep. I sometimes have Agriculture classes and our dogs are working dogs, so there are a few lessons in that. When there was a litter on the ground, I took the puppies, with the Dam and Sire, in to the Central school I taught in for the K -2 composite class. I've also had to take a puppy with me to work, in transit to going interstate or overseas to its new home.
  6. sorry Dracdog, I keep reading that one as mysteryODOUR !!! :D fifi Where's the mystery? It was the dog.
  7. it was a local Judge who made a point of telling me all about the standard I was very impressed, that people take the time to remember, it menas so much for the breed. But what is the Judge's name? They deserve the kudos.
  8. Well anybody who has a dog related business, like grooming, or Kennels, or dog walking, and did not incorporate their breeding into their running costs are selling themselves short. Particularly Kennels as the economy of scale would make the costs of keeping their own dogs minimal. Heck they may even be in a position to come out in front each time they have a litter. And why not? The primary objective is not profit from breeding it is just coincident with their other business. If we are talking business here, and we are, then remember it it encumbent on the taxpayer to prove that they have been overtaxed, otherwise the bastards are legally allowed to steal your money.
  9. Quite the contrary. If you applied for a prefix then it would be 'nigh impossible for you to have missed that section in the Code of Ethics. I defy anybody to post a financial plan showing how it is possible to turn a profit without imposing a detriment on the dogs, breeders, regulatory councils or clients. Of course, it is more than practicable to lower your costs and approach a brake even point, if you are economical and astute, but most breeders spoil their dogs and well there goes any hope of financial recovery. If I didn't feed my dogs with quality feed and never went near a Vet and had a dozen bitches and an endless list of homes, and I didn't go overseas to source bloodlines and never went near a show ring and ... and ... Wait a minute! wouldn't that be puppy farming?
  10. what's not permitted? I know several people who are a registered business for tax purposes. Absolutely. You don't have to be making a profit to declare your business for tax purposes. And why not? I produce working dogs for working enterprises. While my breeding is not a profitable business, they go to profitable businesses. Anyone who does not claim their expenses/loses for tax purposes should do so. Not only does it benefit the dogs because of lower overall costs but improves record keeping as well. I always have more homes than puppies, but that doesn't mean that if I had more bitches I could still home them all. Same with other breeds I would imagine. But you cannot put a value on the quality of life that dogs bring. This is what puppy farms are missing. And afterall, they have to live with themselves.
  11. Maybe so, but that doesn't mean it's not going on and the CCs are turning a blind eye to it. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw-...i-1225995114283 Don't know if Kindee Kennels are registered or not? Quote: "There are no limits, checks or balances and, with puppies selling for anywhere from $500 up to $1500, it's a very lucrative business." End quote. :D  ;) I don't think the board allows enough rofl's
  12. I remember that choosing a prefix was one of the most satisfying things I've ever done with my dogs. I did get my first choice which is pretty cool. http://webs.dogs.net.au/arawn/ My prefix has meaning on many different levels and I've continued that theme through our breeding. It says something about my dogs, myself and our common histories. As well as being something I am interested in and can pursue independently. Once you have a prefix you will then have to decide on dog and maybe even litter names. I find a lot of prefixes and dog names for that matter extremely crass. Good Luck
  13. It would be nice to acknowledge a Judge who can look beyond a face to the dog. Here's hoping there are many more.
  14. The bottom line is that no amount of legislation, regulation, accreditation or WHAT'EVA makes a good groomer. Laws are to deter people, not turn them into diamonds. They can, sometimes protect people. Like all things, there are very few diamonds.
  15. How hard can it be? I've got some scissors and a comb. Bring in the dogs. I'll pick it up as i go along. Don't worry I've been brushing my dogs regularly for six years. ;) Do you need qualifications, certification, regulations and inspections? Dah! Some people have spent a lifetime in the kitchen. They still can't cook.
  16. She's trying to control her environment by an act of dominance. She needs space and a sense of control. It's just timidity from lack of familiarity.
  17. Qualifications and certification won't prevent a bad hair-cut. Last month I had my hair cut three times. I use the 'milkshake' criteria. If you go into a shop for a milkshake and it's not up to scratch then don't go back. My other criteria is the potato scallop test. You can tell a good Fish 'n Chip shop by their potato scallops.
  18. It's all Landscape if it shows the features of weathering and erosion and the landforms created. At least it is for Coastal, Desert, Glacial, Limestone, River and Volcanic Landforms that are all types of Australian Landscapes. A Waterscape? That would have to be a picture or view of the sea or other body of water.
  19. I seem to remember that white is not the safest colour. I think it is yellow. What annoys me about seeing trailers is that they might be going to a show and I'm not. I always look in all points of the compass to try and guess where they'd be headed.
  20. A lucky escape and excellent intervention. Unfortunately, I had a puppy booked as my first dog and the Dam was bitten the day before mating. She survived the transfusion and made it home but deteriorated on her mat, the following day. And my best bitch from our second litter succumbed to snake bite in her new home while still just a puppy. I hate snakes.
  21. Put her in a wheely bin. Only in the UK.
  22. I had a NZ buyer who wanted a pup but didn't want to pay the freight cost. "I could put a stamp on it's nose," I told her.
