I would have thought you will need a series of tests to establish a baseline and then to follow the peak cycle.

Hi mini girl. :) I think what I will do next time, whether with my own dogs or with a bitch sent to stud, is prog test (otherwise its a hit and miss scenario with some luck involved) then complete a natural mating and follow it with an AI. You are lucky they mated, some females might not have been so accomodating and I would have thought an AI would be a sensible back-up. However, given the time frame involved, and the behaviour you've described your boy may have caught her at the end of her cycle (they still present). Px

Sorry guys. Sooki whelped on schedule. However, she was too ill to tend to her pups, 2m & 2f, with the last two particularly the last, showing horrendous signs of the parvo vaccine. For Sooki, this was a difficult last eight weeks following the vaccination, and she suffered its effects throughout. She has recovered and is a different dog now. For us, it was a bit of a roller coaster being taken from a belief we would have puppies, to having them taken from us. Then being told after X-ray there weren't any to begin with but expecting some after an ultrasound only to ultimately see what intervention can cause. On the up side, we found a world class reproduction vet in Casino, and although the experience gained was bitter it is invalauble. On a forum such as this, when people come seeking help, in whichever way it is requested, it must always be hard to know exactly what advice can be given. Px

Just a warning to others that the site is an evangelist web page. Not that that should have anything to do with rescue. Animal Rescue Videos esky When you make reply, go up to the menu bar and pass the cursor ove the icons. Have a practice and then go for it. Nice post. ;) Px

Dog fence I have used this product on two properties. It still needs to be supported with a 3V electric ping wire. Here is the same product used in a goat fence with electric wire. There is a heavier gauge fence though, and that is usually used by contractors. But you just lost someone's maremma through that fence didn't you? So that is probably a good example of fencing that doesn't work? Following this topic with interest as we plan to move to acreage this year You can be whoever you like, but I suggest you read more than the title, and try to keep up with the posts if you are going to critique someone's comments. Several people now have said that the electric ping fence is more than adequate. If you are moving onto property yourself then you might be well advised to consider a similar unit in your plans. Personally, when we are on farm I would not be without them. Regards. Px BTW: Any idiot can lose a dog (refer to 6.3.1.3), however, it takes considerable insight and cunning to recover it again.

Hi Jumabaar. A good article and timely too. Thank you It raises some questions about the current vaccination regimes and strongly reinforces what steve has been saying all along.

Animal Welfare Code of Practice frufru Look. I moved on to five acres several years ago with three dogs. There was nothing around the house to contain the dogs and the five acres was poorly fenced with an old cattle fence. I made a barracade for the three dogs, for when I was at work with roofing iron. One afternoon when I got to the farm gate, my big dog was waiting inside the gate like Lassie. He had broken out of the barricade. The first fence I had put up fell down. The contractor was cutting off the bottom of the tension posts so that he didn't have to dig deep holes. The second fence was never going to fall over, but when the little girl was born she would wriggle through the stretch of wire around the house that divided the yard into two. As she got bigger she simply continued to wriggle through the fence and began to take her older brother with her. It was two and a half years before I tried an electric ping fence. I have not had an escape with it since. When I moved to the second farm, I put the full goat fence up that I posted pictures of. Before I had the electric wire attached my houdini boy escaped at will. After the electric fence was attached and the correct height found there were no further escapes. Now that worked for me My point is that you will find what's best for you. My dogs don't wear collars because it flattens their coats. And the goat fence is for keeping dogs out. This is the goat fence I found one afternoon and fell in love with. It is a beautiful fence and could be hung in an art gallery. The wire is the heavy gauge one. I found the contractor who put it up and had one built. Good Luck

Guess I've got that covered. See ya

Nice find but!!!! Anthropomorphic much. Once upon a time ..... and they all lived happily ever after. :D

There is a heavier gauge fence though, and that is usually used by contractors. When I researched this I was told that I was unable to use an electric fence on my property to keep my rams in as I had Maremma working with them. This came from the RSPCA and regardless of what council says it is against the Prevention of cruelty to animals act for you to use an electric device to contain dogs as far as I know in NSW. If you can prove me wrong Id be a happy girl as my Ram is a major pain in my neck. Right. You cannot use the higher voltage that is used for sheep, cattle or horses. But you can use 3V I do know that 3V is allowable for dogs and is all you need. I don't want to have to touch it a second time that's for sure. The RSPCA does say that the ping wire must be 150mm out from the fence. It might be enough for a ram, I don't know. I have seen and know of someone on the forum who uses a car battery which is a much higher voltage. Not that I am recommeding you do that.

Exactly right JulesP. My young boy when he was just a pup tried to sally some shrub but came to grief impaling himself on the wire that was underneath it. He couldn't move forward and couldn't move back. He was suspended and captured by the fence. If I had not been with the dogs at the time, I would not know where he was, or how long it would have taken to find him. It doesn't matter how big your yard is dogs will get bored with it. The trouble I found out on farm was the dogs did not think 5 acres was big enough either. I've even seen them cross a 100 acre boundary. I will be fencing the next/new property outside of the kennel yards but it will also have lots of doggy diversions. :D

I had to report a neighbour for hitting my dogs in my absence and while I was present. When they came out I discussed fences and the RSPCA will not allow cattle fence, barbed wire, to be used to contain dogs. Now just think about it. A dog running at full zoom around a barbed wire fence, or jumping and scrapping their bellies on it. The Council doesn't know crap, and did they give it to you in writing? That's why I suggested you consult your RSPCA inspector. If you are going to beed the DPI outlines double fencing. The council doesn't know crap! Double fencing is not mandatory. Cattle and horses are entirely different. You can put a cattle fence on 240V mains power but you can't do that for dogs. And you can't use barbed wire either. Wallaby/Roo will jump 150cm which is all you need. Regards We

Different properties, but go right ahead, just be yourself. And I did not lose anybody's Maremma. The dog is at home with its owner. The goat fence I have pictured and which is featured in the third photo from espinays first link has worked 100% :p

It might be better to drop a note with your local RSPCA Inspector. There are requirements for electric fences too.

I frufru. Firstly, you will not be able to attach some dog proof wire/mesh to the cattle (barbed wire) fence because it is not legal. However, if you want to have your property double fenced, as in the DPI code ,then the dog fence should be inside the cattle fence. I left a 4 metre margin from our cattle fence. Electric fence is brilliant. It took me nearly 2 and 1/2 years to keep my houdinis' in but after I installed electric fence, I didn't really need anything else. If you want to keep other dogs out, and who doesn't when you have 'girls,' then you might consider a goat fence. I've had one and they are brilllant too. Depending on your contractor a goat fence is $25/m. And I don't know how your 2.6 acre property app. 10400 sq/m is configured but fencing 100m x 100m is $(4 x 100 x 25) or $10,000. I would pay that for a fence. Px

Hi Rosaline. Crates have an infinite number of uses. At home, in the car, at dog shows etc. The main advantage is that the crate becomes the dogs very own space. Here is one approach, the number of others is limitless.

Yep Training for tricks can be overwhelming. I haven't trained mine for any tricks. I was/am more concerned about 'good doggy manners.' Mostly common sense stuff. They sit before meals or before crossing a road. They walk past other dogs without incident. They drop, go outside when asked, jump up onto the grooming table, follow my direction when off leash at parks etc. They eat separately and come one at a time when I have to put their collars on. Going to the Vet, all that sort of thing. Don't forget the dog's nose. My young boy was a different dog after being able to sniff all the different people while walking around the shops. Obedience is mandatory for mine because that is basically good doggy manners. But you may not be able to bank on her activity levels dropping off. I have Maremmas but I could easily have done agility with my young boy. There are no certainties with dogs and they will do things that are not expected in their breed. Good Luck

Hi donatella. Young dogs will chew things. And they should be encouraged but in the right way because mouth stimulation is very important for dogs. You need to get her biting, chewing and tugging on things is a constructive, developmental and inquisitive way. Games of tug are excellent. Dr Robert Holmes, the dog behaviourist, prescribes mouth stimulation for dogs as part of their environmental enrichment. The other thing is that everything has to be put up from the floor, or it will be chewed on. This one time, at Narrabri, we lost our electricity. Sooki chewed through the vacuum cleaner cord and tripped the power circuit. I've posted this photo before but it was an easy thing to teach.

Well my decision would take into consideration the fact that dogs can G each other up. I wouldn't be too hasty with determining the fate of the second dog that now has very different social contingencies. It is stated that someone opened the OP's gate. And that is something I've experienced myself. Maybe the court could order the owner to put a lock on the gate. BTW. Victorians don't have exclusive rights to harsh, punative penalties for failing to control dogs.
