  1. The law is irrelvant in the context of negligence in animal welfare. Ethics over-rides law every time. And agreed mimimum standards cannot be deemed to lack foundation just because it is politically expedient for one state to do so. Afterall, this is the frontline of our efforts to promote our dogs interests. This is where the trenches have to be dug and a stand against such 'ludicrous' logic has to be taken. Px
  2. Worse. There is the Australian Association of Professional Dog Breeder (AAPDB) website. The developing new breeds is an open issue. Since Tasmanian Labradoodles is a developing new breed I wonder who gets to decide these kind of issues. Secondly, it is an uphill battle when there are organisations that are willing to sanction these 'unvalidated' developing new breeds. To my mind, developing new breeds should not leave the laboratory, if they can be justifiably used for research anyway. Remembering of course the well intentioned foray into a "non-shedding breed." It is very difficult trying to be wise when no one has a crystal ball and what new breeds might be admitted to the ANKC is largely unknown. That said, Tasmanian Labradoodles obviously involves large scale commercial experimentation which I, for one, cannot support Regards Px
  3. I can't see the relevance of state jurisdiction when the issue and context is animal welfare. Surely, what has been deemed minmal care in one state, and generalised for all dogs in that state, very easily can be extended to other states. What, do Tasmania and NT get a different set of basic criteria because the weather is different? Why can't NSW ask Tasmania what they think they are doing? And isn't the RSPCA national? Px
  4. Anything organic within reason. However, no Bones, Meat, Dairy products, Oils, Salty foods, Grass Clippings, Inorganic products. It's also the one place for coffee grinds and tea leaves.
  5. Hi :) Compost worms will also take dog hair. Px
  6. There is no choice at all. People have a right to go about their daily business unaccosted. Which, btw, includes not being attacked by dogs. Further more, people are protected by law in that right and privelege. Mace I think you need to step back from this line of argument. It may be time to seek informed opinion rather than hanging on to a very tenuous point of view. You are not doing yourself any favours here. Px Its not often I find myself agreeing with you Tralee but with this you are so right I really don't know what to say! Thanks. I guess. ;)

  8. DOH! I don't think that's the definition of 'failroading' ;)
  9. Have you read the thread, it has been posted twice at least that Brightside is a rescue group NOT the puppy farm. Correction. Clearly, Tasmanian Labradoodles is not complying with RSPCA or Council requirements.
  10. Quite. It is hard to argue with an indignant 10yr girl. :D However, she is unlikely to be a native Italian speaker who also uses the dialect from the Abruzzesse region. ;)
  11. Hi All :) Well if we are going to pick holes in this 'multi-million dollar enterprise?' then our criticism needs to be based on breechs of the known laws. 10.1.1.3 During mating, breeding pairs must be isolated from the remaining breeding population, and monitored by the person in charge. Two males and one females is a breech. 10.1.1.6 Whelping bitches must be provided with a suitable whelping box, lined with clean bedding, changed daily. I can't see plastic clam shells being suitable as whelping boxes. There is no protection for the pups. 10.1.1.9 Bitches must not have more than two litters in any two year period, unless with the written approval of a veterinary practitioner. The number of pups produced suggests that continual back-to-back matings are occurring. It is also obvious that they are ignorant of several of the guidelines in the animal Welfare Code of Practice, or they are deliberately disregarding them. Clearly, Brightside Sanctuary is not complying with RSPCA or Council requirements. The Council cannot allow breechs of the DPI Code of Practice Px
  12. ChattyKatty You are courteously replying to all the respondents but its not necessary. You have done the responsible thing and sought advice from those with wiser heads on calmer shoulders. I don't think that what you have encountered is normal practice at all and the two breeders you have met are, unfortunately, sloppy and lazy. If you want a pedigree dog, and a puppy from him, then you will need one on the Main register. It is quite acceptable to offer him at stud and then take a pup as stud fee. You should be alerted though to the foul practice of people out in the street soliciting your dog for mating. If you have decided to get a pedigree dog there are responsibilities attached. Then I would suggest you join your Canine Control Council as well. To the other posters, I think considering some of the motives of many people, having a male dog presents much less risk or confusion and potential problems than keeping a female bitch. Once Again Good Luck Px
  13. Hi Well, if you are ever talking to Italians and you get them repeat the word 'Maremma' you will quite clearly hear the correct pronunciation. Regards
  14. I asked the seller if she would do it have all the pups except one when me boy turned 5/6 yrs when she said no it was over...but i am new to this kind of thing another breeder did not want to sell me a pup but an already over bred dog with similar conditions now that i know this is not unusual i am fine with it so yeah thanks. What would you 'carry on his line with' in regards to a female dog? If my Babel fish is working correctly, you wanted to keep one of the puppies from a litter when the dog was 5 or 6. The breeder said no. Well, that's usually between you and the owner of the Dam. Another breeder wanted to sell you an older dog, an expeienced stud dog, but wasn't going to allow you to keep a pup from your own litter either. So now you think that all this is normal practice. It isn't It seems to me that you want a puppy and can wait 5 or 6 years but you also want to breed it yourself. Lastly, on this forum, you need to couch your comments in a much less "breeder bashing" fashion. This is a 'help' forum so if you still want a puppy, then get one without conditions attached. However, wanting a dog so that you can have one puppy in a few years time as an added extra is the wrong reason to be putting to responsible dog owners and ethical breeders. Good Luck Px
  15. How is getting a puppy an executive decision? A decision like that comes from the heart and the authority remains with the breeder. A pedigree dog on the Limited register can be moved to the Main register at a later time. So, you might have jumped the gun here. It is not uncommon for new pedigree dog owners to consider showing and ultimately breeding. And, if you can rise to the challenge and fulfil the requirements then you have every right to do so. I would have shut down the transaction with the breeder at but it is easy to judge in hindsight. I don't think it has anything to do with you being a single mum, either do I think you are being manipulated. Just a sloppy breeder in this case and I am sorry that, in your very first post, you didn't get the help you asked for before now. I also think it is important to remember the purpose of the forum and to consider too the consequences of meeting those who come here asking for help with less than what is expected (every post has the potential to go viral). 16. As far as I have been able to understand, dogs work a split shift. They are most active in the morning and then again in the evening. During the middle of the day, they sleep most of the time unless they are disturbed. Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun. Careless need not be care less. ;) Px
  17. Well firstly you have not cited the article. Secondly, most advice will tell you that if you are feeding a balanced diet, you should not need to add supplements. I do give my dogs eggs, broken in a dish, and they rarely eat the shell. They need calcium for muscle contraction but that doesn't mean they can have too much. It can calcify heart valves and many other nasty things. Px
  18. Many dogs will return if they wander off, they don't need training tutorials. The trick is to get them into the yard again. Maybe try teaching him to lie and wait on the front veranda or something. Definately lock the gate. There really is no advice for dogs and roads. They simply do not mix. My Beagle would sit on command in the middle of a four laned, mainroad but it did not stop some idiot changing lanes to run him over when he was called to the footpath. He survived though. You will see a lot of lost dog signs on New Years Day and other times when there is fireworks. Watch your dog on 'cracker night' and adjust your management of the dog accordingly. Good Luck. Px
  19. Hi far_kennel_73. :) Your inaugural post and topic is well reasoned and responsible. Firstly, congratulations on your new boy. In answer to your first question; Yes if you live in Hollywood. :D However you can minimise the chances of not recovering a lost dog. The most important prevention is to have good fences but that can work against you once the dog is out. If your dog can't get out then it can't get back in either. Many dogs will return but if they can't get in then they won't stay, too many distractions. A one way doggy door in your fence could be an option but you would have to teach Dex how to use it. The trade off is keeping others out but if you dog is not missing it could be locked and only opened when necessary. I think the idea you have about walking your dog around the neighbourhood to familiarise him to his surroundings and helping him to find the direction home is excellent. I do the same thing with my dogs. However, don't expect him to ring the doorbell The other aspect of walking your dog regularly is that it might be recognised if it is lost. You should also teach your dog good road sense if you are concerned about it getting out or being let out. Thunderstorms and fireworks are totally unpredictable. We camped at Condobolin one year at one of the combined Dog Show and A&I Shows. The fireworks were not a problem until they became extended over several hours. Fireworks that become protracted can unsettle the best of dogs. Lastly if Dex wears a permanent collar then you might want to invest in a GPS for him. And of course, he should be registered and microchipped. Good Luck Px
  20. Scientists have found the secret recipe behind the spectacular variety of dog shapes and sizes, and it could help unravel the complexity of human genetic disease. this just reinforces the argument for purebred dogs. Which can only be a good thing. I should think its better to have a small number of errant genes than to be full of them. But we already knew that. :D Px
  21. Burke's Backyard    You must be new here. I would check with real breeders and not some numpty who used prime time television to sell plants through nurseries on weekends. Mr Burke had many facts about dogs misconstrued including promoting designer breeds. FYI A Maremma in 2004 was $800 and today I ask $1000 for our puppies. Thats hardly a 400% increase. However, greater pre and post-mating testing does add costs to the final asking price. More research needed. Px
  22. I wish I lived in the area. I love a good mystery and have solved some with very basic detective skills. Like who broke into my car while it was parked at the pool! Who threw bolts through my windows at Narrabri! Who posted a video of me on YouTube with my consent, etc! It wouldn't take much to find the culprits going on the information given.
  23. Px The definition of "effective control" is that the dog is leashed and secured to a person, it was and therefore doesn't breach requirement of effective control. I know what the law states, and it is also a matter of how you read the law. That is why they have lawyers and learned judges. You cannot interpret the law as: " on a leash but running around as if not on a leash" The phrase: "effective control of some competent person by means of an adequate ... leash" is to be understood that the leash provides control of the dog and is not just an adornment or piece of bling. However, while most dog people would have walked past the dog defensively, a child or disabled or invalid person may not. You do not have a law that supports the view that the injured person was at fault and therefore committed an offense. That kind of argument is just rubbish. Px
  24. Hi Pawprints. I am sorry to hear that your friend has been attacked by a dog. There are a couple of issues that I think might help. Firstly, your friend should not have had to walk around the couple and their dogs as a footpath is a public thoroughfare. It is an offense to obstruct a public thoroughfare. I like to keep my dogs on the opposite side of oncoming pedestrians. Dogs can become territorial, and one of my dogs will react if it determines that someone out walking is trying to pass between me and the dog. My point being that the person walking the dog needs to be fully conversant with the dogs behaviour before effective control by a competent person can be enacted. I hope this adds to the information you requested. Px
  25. My apologies if the reply was a bit cryptic. It is not something which I would wish anyone would have to go through particularly given the protracted and compounding events that lead up to our ultimate disappointment. It is hard to be philosophical but Sooki is a strong and healthy bitch and has recovered well. Many Thanks Px
