Two items to add to your two categories. 1. My dogs are babies, children grow up. 2. My dogs like running wild/free. Regards Px

Hmmm! I know what that behaviour is; its superstitious. Pavlov used this term early in his work with pidgeons Dogs use superstitious behaviour a lot. It looks smart to our anthropomorphic minds. At least, I thought it was superstitious until he had a second go. BTW. If I had that Dane I could win a car. :)

It would depend on what is in your area. And that is the correct approach to vaccinating dogs. However, we have parvo soup where we live and many other places do too. It would need to be pretty solid evidence to move from a triple vac. to a double in high risk areas. There's one way to find out though, should you want to take the "risk". BTW. I am against over-medicating dogs and very pro-dog. Px

Getting A White Coat To 'shine'
Tralee replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Chequeredblackdog. :) Border Collie cross. Surely not. You need lots of sun to make white coats shine. There are iridescent shampoos available, but I let my dogs shine naturally. I think you may have the breeds wrong. Regards Px -
Beautiful story which I fully support. There is absolutely nothing wrong with scripting an encounter with a lost, helpless dog, staging a rescue and medical treatment, all for propoganda. Granted the dog was genuninely in very poor condition, but the rest ????? Anyway, it clearly had the desired effect.

Best thing is to have a witness. Here in NSW the Companion Animlas act allows for certain incidents. I expect QLD would be similar 16 Offences where dog attacks person or animal (1) If a dog rushes at, attacks, bites, harasses or chases any person or animal (other than vermin), whether or not any injury is caused to the person or animal: (a) the owner of the dog, or (b) if the owner is not present at the time of the offence and another person who is of or above the age of 16 years is in charge of the dog at that time--that other person, is guilty of an offence. Maximum penalty: (a) 50 penalty units except in the case of a dangerous or restricted dog, or (b) 300 penalty units in the case of a dangerous or restricted dog. (1A) The owner of a dangerous dog or a restricted dog is guilty of an offence if: (a) the dog attacks or bites any person (whether or not any injury is caused to the person), and (b) the incident occurs as a result of the owner's failure to comply with any one or more of the requirements of section 51 or 56 (as the case requires) in relation to the dog. Maximum penalty: 500 penalty units or imprisonment for 2 years, or both. Conviction for an offence under this subsection results in permanent disqualification from owning a dog or from being in charge of a dog in a public place. See section 23. (2) It is not an offence under this section if the incident occurred: (a) as a result of the dog being teased, mistreated, attacked or otherwise provoked, or (b) as a result of the person or animal trespassing on the property on which the dog was being kept, or © as a result of the dog acting in reasonable defence of a person or property, or (d) in the course of lawful hunting, or (e) in the course of the working of stock by the dog or the training of the dog in the working of stock. (3) This section does not apply to a police dog. You could argue that the dog was mistreated as the person had been instructed not to approach the dog, since you were aware of the dogs temperament, and the person breeched reasonable expectations. Best thing is to get the dog a muzzle. Arguing on the grounds of section (2) is extremely difficult without witnesses Regards

Any Ideas On Where To Find Beds Like These

I have these on my wish list. Mat Cushion Trampoline -
Well I didn't put my reasons and I think your advice is misguided. I've had a Beagle and found him very responsive to training. He could cross a four-laned highway purely on commands. (It was an emergency of course). Not a pack dog at all but a single companion animal. He did go off after a Wallaby one night at dusk in the State forest, but this is the esssence of a Beagle, he found his way across creeks and streams to our cabin a distance of several kilometres where he had never been before, purely by scent. They are a nose attached to a dog. Temperaments are always great and family pets and animals never a problem. errhh On Disneyland perhaps.Regards. Px

Hi Whichbreed. :) Seriously, that's the wrong question for this forum! With any luck the breed will find you. Get a name for your dog. Then, it will come to you. You'll see. However, I think it's Keeshound. Although, Beagle would fit your criteria. Good Luck Px

Well, I am sympathetic to what you are saying although I don't think you have a say in it. The idea that you can train a dog totally cancels out the argument that some breeds are not suited to some people. I don't think lions or elephants are suited to the circus but there you are. What you do have a say in is what dogs you source for yourself and where you might send your own dogs. On the balance of argument, I would never have embraced the Maremma Sheepdog as my breed of choice if I had accepted the 'condemnation' of the breed or the accusations of 'ignorance' from others. Saying that of course, I would not give a child a 55kg dog to walk. But that is a different thing entirely. Which means to say, what a person does with their dog can be curtailed. Regards.

Hi Antanquin :) I think the lady should be commended for being at obedience. I cannot see how it is possible to rate a dog breed with a personality or body type. Since the basic tenet of responsible dog ownership is 'deed not breed' the lady is to her credit at training with her dog. The fact that she likes the dog must go in her favour since it will allow greater tolerance. Not everybody is a born dog trainer, but they can learn, and liking the dog in the first place will make learning so much easier. As long as she enjoys her dog and they can have fun together the relationship for later training should be present. Regards Px

You might describe her as .. loquacious.

Off topic!! How so?? I responded to this question from the OP:- with this comment:- which to my mind, is information not at hand. In regard to the question of being in the vicinity of stock, we live in the dairy country of Northern NSW. You might say there are one or two cows. ;) Px

Granted. But it has been recommended to me as a quarterly treatment for heartworm. However, if you are familiar with the history of my Vet as some people on DOL are, then there should be no surprises here. So, it goes without saying that further inquiries will be made. Px
-
I will have to ring the Vet tomorrow and ask them because I've forgotten. I think its got a couple of m's in it, so maybe a game of hangman while we're waiting. .. m _ _ _ _ _ m _ _ _ _ _ _ Regards PS Found it Milbemax I have been using it as a quartely all-wormer AND heart wormer on the recommendation of one of the Vets here.

For me personally its easy to do a once a year injection and that is it. I am so paranoid i may forget to give a mnthly tablet for it ect. I have all my dogs done on the yrly injection and have never had a problem. I got my new girl injected at 6mnths and didnt have any problem with her either :) I've changed to the quarterly heartworm and all-wormer. Since I was religiously giving the dogs their tri-mester wormer at the beginning of every season, its one less pill round every month. Its easy to overlook. I think you run the risk of the yearly injections attenuating as the months pass. Or loading them with drug at the beginning of the treatment. And some Vets do become blasé about their practice and even attempt treatment they don't have the expertise for. Of course the dogs, and their owners/carers are disadvantaged by less than adequate care. Regards

Enough!

Hi MissB. :) Is your pup male or female. My big female would only eat every second day, for at least two weeks. I regularly chucked a chicken wing that just sat in her bowl. She is also a large breed, and eats much more competitively now to keep the other three dogs off. Some dogs are just not gluttons. Px

Struggling With Teach Come.
Tralee replied to StaffordLUV's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'd agree that 11 weeks is still 'puppy time' I went through *come* at obedience on Monday. Eye contact, signal first (hands from waist to shoulder, shout excitedly and run backwards quickly as if abandoning her. An unfamiliar environment too. Take a visit to a park and train her there. But still, let her be a puppy first, there's plenty of time. Good luck -
-- like ... 'lillies.' Px So what is a show breed exactly? Well thanks Bjelkier. I think someone wasn't paying attention to the op's vid. ;) The Italians, from where my breed originates, do maintain a variety within the breed. As well as several sub-types, there is a demarcation between breeding show dogs, and breeding working dogs. They also make distinctions based on function such as reproductive champion, among others. Here in Australia, as in others western countries, it could be argued that there are only three types of dogs, namely; show dogs, pet dogs and cross-breeds. I appreciate that there is a healthy working dog industry as well but the argument in the video pertains to a majority of functional traits being lost to a 'glamour' diversion. We can defend our dogs against such claims but I think the video needs to be 'appreciated' for the claims it makes. Regards Px

Despite the bias, if the health problems listed are accurate then there is an ethical issue. It then becomes a question of the dogs welfare. I don't have a show breed, I have a rustic working breed. So, I look at things from the other end of the discussion. What glory is there in glamour, when 'all is vanity'? Indeed -- like ... 'lillies.' Px

Where's the like button.

A big mob of roos/wallaby too. You've got the Coat of Arms there. I wonder who would win in a race betwen an Emu and a Kangaroo. Um-ba-da-lip-ida-da-da. Px
