Hi :) I have just seen the effects of garlic on E.coli on Wednesday and Thursday at our Macquarie University Science Experience day at school. Garlic strongly inhibits the growth of E. coli on agar plates. I am told nutmeg, cloves and bread mold also have the same effect. So garlis is an antiseptic but it is also bug specific and has no effect on some other germs. That's an excellent article JRzipper but a reference to your source would be helpful.

Extremely Inactive Dog (particularly Acute Inquiry).

Well thanks to the assistance of some kind people here on DOL I took my work college, a retired Vet, along to the surgery this afternoon for moral support. The Surgery was expecting me since I had rung this morning and advised them I would be contacting the specialist (arthrodesis surgeon) about the requirement for pain relief. So we collected the X-rays, referral letter, account receipts and the medications I gave them a disdainful Cheerio as we left and I doubt I will return. Further to some concerns that people have about the attentiom I have given this dog: Firstly, the dog IMO is no ordinary Maremma. I extremely like his temperament, conformation (ears, lip, stature, and pedigree). I have known this Kennel since 2004 and have not seen the like of their dogs even at Show. Hence my investment in the dog. The lady was not coping, which happens, but I am certain was not intentional. Its not a perfect world. Consider it as my foray into rescue which is becoming compulsory for breeders. Now, the dog tethered on the terrace was only temporary and I tried lots of combinations in order to find where the dog could be managed and it would be most comfortable. The dog likes to be inside beside my desk. The dog is getting more attention than my own dogs which also includes expenses. I am hopeful that an appointment for surgery can be organised ASAP. Thanks again Regards to all. -

Hmmmmpff Yeah you know what. Every case of lack of due diligence by the Vet, assisting Vet nurses or reception staff was my fault. Because I used to be a Vet in a passed life and I know everything about Veterinary care. Beggars belief really. -

Its not a rope. The dog been on the terrace for short periods infrequently, and has jumped over. What you can see is two tethers, one each side, to allow the dog to move without being able to climb over the ballustrade. -

Well jump right in with a sledge hammer. Extremely Inactive Dog (particularly Acute Inquiry). Canvassing Possible Causes. This thread is in context of the previous thread. Palmar Luxation Of The Antebrachiocarpal Joint Advice Sought After taking the dog, finances had to be arranged and guaranteed. $5000 is not something many people can find over night. I had the dog re-diagnosed. OK While attending the dog 'pre-surgery' naturally a number of questions arose. Lets be clear about this, this is not my dog and other than the dislocation of the front paw the dog appears very well cared for. The injury has cast a palour of suspicion over his condition but surely that is natural. finances have now been arranged and guaranteed hence the request for a referral. As I said not a lot of people have that sort of money. So lets evaluate. DOL provides some expert and often well meaning advice. I am providing adequate care, for what I have said is not my dog. If you don't pay for it Vets won't do more than that either. But that doesn't mean I cannot seek to move beyond basic Veterinary advice which is what I have done. Problem???? -

I did read your response dogmad. I am aware that there may be pain from other sources, but first things first. -

It should be all squared up tomorrow Haredown Whippets. It should also be the end of a very dissatisfied chapter in my dogs' history with this current Vet. -

Seems the second Vet I called on may be 'buddies' with this other surgery. I need to find a Vet who is neutral. Anyway, I will be taking one of my teaching colleges who is a retired Vet along with me tomorrow. We still have to collect the referral. I am also planning on talking to the specialist tomorrow and getting instructions about pain management to relay to the current Vet. -

That was the cost for the initial anaesthetic, X-rays, recovery injection and consultation. -

I tried to get some pain killers from another Vet. They consulted the original Vet surgery by phone and would not administer a prescription drug without seeing the dog themselves. I was a bit reluctant to double up on the $360 consult. -

Yep, unfortunately. I think they've had a fair go. We have a number of Vets here. The trick is going to be finding one who is not too close and personal with this current 'monster' -

A brief note, please look away if you are easily distressed. A referral and medication was requested this morning before work, and an instruction to collect them this afternoon was given. I was advised the Vet would be away today so I agreed to collect the referral tomorrow but would require the meds. Once again I left the Vet this afternoon without the meds because no contingency plan for the absent Vet or procedure for referral to another Vet was in place. Same Vet, Same unsatisfactory care. I am not happy. -

Unfortunately, while he was at home, he was not been restricted from activity and I fear the maximum damage has been done. One of the reasons I have the dog here with me is because the owner could not restrict his movement. I am sure he is home sick as well. -

I only sling the leg up if he wants to hobble around outside. I put it inside the front strap of the harness shown below. So it prevents him putting weight on it. The leg can slip out when he wees, so he can balance. I refit the leg when he starts to walk again. You can also see his morale is quite good. -

The Vet said nothing other than discussing the X-ray. At this stage I would have thought there is some atrophy of the muscle. That should not be a concern, as he will be immobilised for 12 weeks after surgery. Apparently the injury is a common occurrence in working dogs, according to the specialist, and Zuess sustained the injury jumping. (ouch) -

Well lets just say some Vets are meticulous and others aren't. However, a rejoinder, this thread's not about comparing Vets though. -

Yep A full blood work up sounds good. The dog is not anorexic, just slightly too much rib and too much waste. Having said that he does have narrow hips. -

I understand your concerns but I have the dog here with me because of my concerns for him. About being underweight, he is Maremma and they can be deceptively bigger or smaller than they appear. So I did not discover how lean he was until he had been here a few days. My dogs are all heavy and are well fed so feeding a dog is not a major concern here. -

Pers. In the previous thread I have presented the diagnosis from 'my Vet' who was consulted initially. Bullb. They mentioned giving the dog painkillers when we arrived at the Vet, but we eventually went home without any. -

He hobbles. There is a pronounced lameness, and considerable limp. He will persist on walking on it if left unattended but eventually holds it of the ground. He has been hard to keep up with on three legs. Several days ago he was very fleet of 'paw' but seems to have lost interest in going out for a walk.
