I second Daisy's ideas! I love Ruby, Scarlett and Rosie for red girls. Coming up blank but will try to think of some other names.

Only you know if you're up to the challenge of training 2 deaf pups. Personally, I would go with some of the advice already posted about getting another dog/pup who is not hearing-impaired. My boxer had two white siblings in his litter. As is often the case with white boxers, both pups were deaf. The breeder placed them in homes that already had an adult, well-trained dog. She feels that it just makes training a deaf pup a lot easier. For eg. for recall, the deaf pup will take a visual cue from the older dog responding to its' owner calling it. Good luck in your decision-making.

Ideas For Homemade Pet Biscuits
trinabean replied to BCPuppy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
BCPuppy I think your ideas are good. I particularly like the idea of a wheat-free range. Maybe some grain-free treats? As there are so many dogs with allergies it might be good to research the most common food allergens. You might find a niche market. It can be hard to find suitable treats if your dog can't tolerate all foods. So many companies blend a lot of ingredients into treats too. A treat may be labelled as 'chicken' flavoured but also contain beef, pork etc.. Not great if beef gives your dog diahorrea and you didn't check the label carefully! So maybe some single meat flavours too? One more idea, you could make some of your treats small enough to fit into some of the most common treat dispensers/ Kongs etc. Good luck, I'll definitely be interested in what you come up with. -

I recall Erny writing about using calendula tea on skin conditions somewhere on DOL. You could search some previous threads to find it? Failing that, you could PM Erny. It sounded like a good natural (and inexpensive) remedy for itchy/inflamed skin. Good luck with working out what's causing the problem. edited for spelling!

When The Time Comes How Do You Tell Your Child?
trinabean replied to casowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
I like Tassie's idea of capturing memories and celebrating Shannon's life. I also agree with Teebs that honesty is really important for kids. Sometimes they cope better with the truth than we do as adults. If your son is told the truth of what is happening to Shannon he might be better prepared when the time comes? It would give him the opportunity to be pro-active in giving her the best time possible in this last stage of her life. He might have some good ideas of things he would like to do with/ for her too. Another DOLer who lost a dog recently had her dog do a 'painting' with her paws on canvas as a lasting memento. I thought it was a beautiful idea. I wish you well at this difficult time. -
Edit. Trying to tidy up.

Recreational Bones For Smaller Dogs
trinabean replied to Sam the man's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I find kangaroo tails keep my dog busy for a while. Very lean and sinewy so not quick to consume. Mine is a boxer though so I'm not sure if they're too big for JRT's What about stuffing and freezing some Kongs too with some favourite food inside? -
The story is distressing but there is some good information in the link. Maybe just post the link? I found the "let's talk dog" part of their website useful.

Agree. I've found that putting at least one crate (we have several, ours is an inside dog too) in a room separated by a child gate works well. Very useful for those moments when you can't supervise. We covered ours with a blanket too. Cosy for the pup and the kids left him to sleep more than when they could see him more easily! ;)

Not Allowing Your Dog To Play With Other Dogs...
trinabean replied to persephone's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My Bulldog is exactly like Froggy! People can get a bit testy, she is verry vocal and being a bulldog sounds like she is growling and chocking. I Love it when a rough boxer or something comes in. :D Like mine. ;) And like Rastus froggy, I'm cautious and selective as to who I let him play with. Bruno looks so surprised when another dog doesn't appreciate an awesome body slam/ wrestle. I'm very mindful of the size difference of dogs, differing play-styles and potential for injury and try to judge each situation accordingly. He plays beautifully with like-minded medium-large dogs (other Boxers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks,a neighbours Amstaff etc) He'd probably love your dog too Bullyisious! ;) -
I'm just popping in to say hi instead of lurking. I normally loiter in the boxer thread ( I have a 7 month old boxer called Bruno). He is fitting in well with our family (we have two sons). Two boys and a boxer...never a dull moment! We've done puppy school and a basic obedience course so far. I might hit you all up for obedience course ideas in the near future ...but don't want to be pushy and demanding in my first post! ;)

I fell in love with boxers by accident. My best friend has had several over the years, each of them have been loveable clowns! When we started looking at adding a dog to our family last year we came up with this criteria: We wanted a medium-large breed, short minimal-fuss coat ( I'd rather walk a dog than clip/groom it ;)), energetic enough and not too fragile for kids to play with, a dog that would enjoy being with our family and a 'warning barker' rather than an 'every damned little thing barker' ( two of those live next door ). It wasn't essential but I also have a thing for wrinkles..and um..jowels.... We had to wait a while for him but we finally got our gorgeous red boy in February. Bruno is 7 months old now and is fitting in well with our family. As I sit here typing this my lovely boy is asleep at my feet. In prime position too, hogging the heater. ;)

I did a combination of crate-training and putting newspaper on the laundry floor. I crated/ watched/took him to the toilet when I was home. I used newspaper on the laundry floor and left the crate open if I had to be away for an extended period (laundry child-gated off to contain him). The area of newspaper got reduced in size gradually and he was able to 'hold on' until I got home as he got older. He was fully house-trained at around 5 months old. His crate is more just a bed/refuge now as he is trustworthy in the rest of the house. I got worried about the pee pads as my pup loved chewing them. I figured newspaper was safer than plastic to chew ( I could be wrong though?) Good way to use up some of those free newspapers too! Good luck with your puppy. Look forward to some piccies of your new arrival. ;)
