Barking When We Arrive Home
trinabean replied to Dame Aussie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
 The barkless bouncing ninja greets meet when I arrive home too Stans mum. Whips the shopping with his helicopter tail and makes a happy groan sometimes. Aussie 3 maybe you could record your dogs bark for me to play here? I want potential burglars to know I actually have a dog. With a nice big Anatolian bark. Sorry, that was off-topic, I just had bark-envy. -
English Ivy I was feeding Big dog BARF for a while and thought it was a good food. My dog loved some varieties more than others, and seemed happier eating them when they were semi-frozen. Which was good, considering the number of times I hadn't thawed enough patties.

And you braved it, and came and had a look anyway. Andisa, I like the idea of stuffed chicken frames. Great tip. :)

Allergy Elimination Diet -is Barf Roo Acceptable?
trinabean replied to booge's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I can't tell you what the recommended amount of dry food to feed is, it depends what you are feeding. Some manufacturers have recommended amounts on their packaging. I'm pretty sure Royal Canin did, I think I was lucky to get mine to even eat half the recommended amount though! As for the roo, it is very lean. My vet and I chose to suspend a roo/ sweet potato elimination diet at the 3 week mark. He was so thin and lethargic that his itchiness was the lesser evil. -
I'm just heartbroken after viewing the photos in the second link you've posted (the owners saying their last goodbyes before their dogs were PTS). In the first photo one of the dogs is wagging his tail so fast it is but a blur. So beautiful and trusting.... This is despicable and misguided legislation at its beauracratic worst. I'm not sure if my email will fall on deaf ears as I'm not a Victorian resident/ voter, but will send it anyway. RIP Bear and Cooda, and my heartfelt condolences to your owners.

Excellent. :)

Show Great Dane Worth $27,000 Stolen From Rv (us)
trinabean replied to Maxiewolf's topic in In The News
I guess it depends on what you are familiar with. I have an import that cost me no less than $35,000 AUD. If someone asked me what my dog was 'worth' - yes it would be 35,000 plus some. 'The poor little bugger' probably had his ears cropped in his country of origin. But apparently he was imported from Australia. So the dog had it's ears cropped in a country where ear cropping is legal? Still doesn't make it a poor little bugger. Unless that's the way you describe every recipient of a veterinary procedure. I was simply pointing out that any ear cropping wouldn't have happened here. -

The shop is called 'South St Pet supplies' on South St in O'Connor (close to Fremantle). Their phone number is (08) 93378599 if your mum wants to check what they stock before driving there. The woman who owns it is really helpful. It is a small shop so they don't have huge quantities of stock but she will order things in if needed. I've also bought Holistic Select anchovy from Better Pets and Gardens in Bibra Lake. They had to order it in though. :)

I buy my roo meat and VAN from a little independent pet supplies place here in Perth. They stock some of the less common bicuits like Canidae, Holistic select etc. They don't have a website but I can check when I go in for supplies later this week. :)

Older Dog Drinking More Than Usual
trinabean replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Trinabean, I will let you know how I go with the diet plan Koda has been prescribed (12 week plan) and if it seems to work it maybe beneficial to pass onto you. Feedback is always good to share I think. I will start Koda on the weekend when her meds finish so the slippery elm won't compromise the meds. :) Thanks, feel free to PM me and let me know how it goes. Good luck with Koda. :) -
Older Dog Drinking More Than Usual
trinabean replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes, at first I thought the VAN fibre might upset the gut, but some fibre seems helpful for my dog. I find mashed or cooked grated sweet potato soothes his gut too, more so than pumpkin (which normally people swear by). I use the VAN sensitive skin as it has some extras like protexin in it. I like it as it balances up the diet I am feeding, and it seems to be working for my dog. -
You sound like you've got it sorted now but I've found slippery elm very useful. My dog has had chronic colitis issues until recently. I've outlined a diet that is working for us in a thread here about a dog drinking more than usual. That may not be helpful for your dog though if diet isn't the cause. With slippery elm I mix about one teaspoon into about a tablespoon of natural yoghurt and blob in on top of the dog's food. I haven't had to use it lately but will always keep some on hand. Good luck with Koda.

Older Dog Drinking More Than Usual
trinabean replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I can't help with the reasons why she is drinking more but I can offer one idea on diet. Briefly, I have dog that has suffered chronic colitis and can't tolerate biscuits or a completely raw diet. The best success I've had is the last few months that I have been feeding VAN plus the recommended amount of meat, but cooked not raw. I don't vary the diet much either. I bake 2kg at a time of roo/chicken mince sometimes with a bit of grated sweet potato/ pumpkin/ spinach. I then mix in the suggested amount of soaked VAN to the cooled meat. It lasts a few days. Touch wood its working for us, no runs or colitis for weeks now. If colitis symptoms happen I find mixing a teaspoon of slippery elm into a blob of natural yoghurt on top of the food helps. Good luck. Forgive me the typos, sent from my phone, fat fingers.... -
How To Help Dogs Gain Weight.
trinabean replied to boxmeupboxer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As the owner of another skinny boxer, I feel your pain Boxmeupboxer. My boy hovers around 25kg, no matter how much good food I shovel into him. He is quite ribby and is a small eater too. I've bolded the things in Danois's post that I currently add to his diet to encourage him to eat more. I think there has been a small improvement in my dog since adding more chicken frames to his diet. He gets one most days in addition to his normal diet. Good luck. :) -
Poor little pups. Unfortunately I am usually gobsmacked in a situation like that, I think of all the things I should have said afterwards.
-
There were 4 in the bed and the little one said... Love it Ruthless. :)

My boxer got quite sick when I last used Drontal. No worms were evident but he was flat, vomited and refused food for a couple of days. I wormed him this week with Canex and he was completely fine, no side-effects whatsoever.

Lost 2 Dogs -now Found Safe N Sound
trinabean replied to Animal House's topic in General Dog Discussion
Phew! So glad they're home again. :) Did you find them or did they return of their own volition? I wonder where they got to on their adventure? -
Can you enclose an area like a laundry with baby gates? If you leave the crate open in a confined, safe space in the house with water, chew toys, puppy pads etc. your dog could be left inside the house while you are out. It sounds like at the moment for your dog being put outside=being alone. He may be calmer inside the house with the familiar smells etc. If he gets used to being in the confined area for short periods when you are home he will be better prepared for being home alone. I found it helped to mostly cover the crate with a sheet, and line it with comfy bedding (making a cosy 'den'). It also helped settle my dog to give him a special chew toy or Kong filled with something tasty to have in there. He had a few special toys he was only given when I went out. So going into that crate/area was a good thing. :) Ok, I just went back through the thread and Lavendergirl explained it much better than me.

Mason Gibbs, I went to South St pet supplies today to stock up and yes, they do have dried horse treats available. It looks like jerky sticks, you could cut it into small pieces for training etc. It's sold as loose sticks, about $1.30 a piece. They had dried 'pipes' too, which were very tough and more like a chew treat, about 30cm long. They also had dried goat.
