I personally would train her, I feel you too need to learn it together, herding is not like any other dog thing, its teamwork! and is your trainer going to bring your cows in at night.. I would if living in NSW train you to train her however! I knew nothing when I started on my Sooty.. in fact I'd never been in the same paddock as a sheep and my own dog. so your one step up on me.. I dont know if one of the DogsNSW will take your offer on.. but I think it would be much better for you to take your dog to erskine park and train it yourself...

you can buy them online or at more decent food suppliers.. I dont like them, mainly cause it puts something extra in your hand... nothing beat a "good" or "yes"

the good thing about the space on Stephs farm is practising the outrun at gradual size increases is a matter of you walking further.. luckily for me, Training the outrun was easy.. the problem I had was if I was to far away sooty lost his power... and didn't lift the sheep, so we practised a few power exercises and now he does it well, so a 300m B course outrun wouldn't be to hard for him.. I just need to work on driving... hopefully next year he'll be driving well and I can do my intermediate runs.. and hes not even 3 yet!

inevitable, I wouldn't worry about all that stuff yet anyway.. if your dog is not up to trialling stage.. keep entering PT.. its a good way to get used to the stress, and you can practise controlling your dog in a "trial like" setting.. I do that with my bitch who is a pain in the ass.. an advanced run is tricky to all competitors.. especially if your sheep or ducks aren't compliant! on the point of cows, we are not touching them yet in perth, but one of our committee members might be getting some soon!! look out!!
-
inevitable.. its all about the outrun for HSA.. the rest of it is similar to PT in terms of control, (other than loosing points for offline..) but if you have a good dog that follows nicely behind you, or drives nicely infront... and your flanks are good.. HSA isn't so bad..

congrats Piper!!! well done, getting a good advanced run on an 10yo is never easy!! SA is much like WA.. its a growing sport.. I worried next year my high in trials wont flow so easily!! there was about 6people doing PT last trial.. so with some summer months training that'll be 6 people trialling next year!! rumour has it they might be building us a paddock at dogswa! which means herding might go to a new level in the next few years here..

I put sooty back in HSAs.. he's not ready for HIA.. wont be long though we have ducks at our next trial, so that'll be interesting. Have Jane from SA judging..

perth trials went well today... my boy took out high in trial.. lots of fun and abit of ran!!
-
what would prevent me from doing this, is the cost of finding out which sire was responsible for which pup..
-
pros and cons of what? buying 2 pups? or buying pups? or buying ankc pups?

Hey guys, this is a bit of a plug for the newly formed herding club in WA, but I know how many people I have to private message about this, so I'm making content public.. the All Breeds Herding Club est 2011 check out our website for more details All Breeds Herding Club WA sorry if there are bugs on the site, newly constructed.. I think I've got them all.. Peter

Ht you need to show a controlled stop, with some ability to control direction.. PT requires abit more work, a stop on the course, a stop to pen, a pen.. and more control, circling and excessive gripping get frowned upon at this level!! otherwise, both of them are not to hard.. and sine they are "tests" its a matter of pass or fail, not scores..

What Training Treats Do You Use?
Sherlot replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
my dogs love frankfurters and chicken chunkers.. and will do almost anything for either... -
are the rules not descriptive enough? I don't mean that in a rude way, they are doing a rule review, and if we could improve on the wording or the diagram I'm open to suggestions.. dont forgot HT and PT are just tests, dont stress, you dont loose points of off line or doing anything to wrong.. The idea is to test control of your dog. so the basic pick up of sheep, walk through to panels and a control stop in the walk and before the pen.. if the dog is a little silly this is ignored, if the dog is very norty then you'll get pulled up.. good luck!

i'd let her chase to build up confidence again, and encourage any contact she has with sheep.. if the sheep head butt really put her off.. use light sheep too, you want reactive sheep..

299 online...

Ann and Twist also got 99 1/2 in Advanced B but she won it with Jinnie on a count back. Cole came 4th in advanced A with his 96 so the standard here is very high. I might have to do an interstate trip to try for his HIT for his championship from A Course - it is really jhard to beat the good started dogs who regularly get 99s and 100s ETA Twists run in B Course was absolutely beautiful watch - she never put a foot wrong and lost the 1/2 on the fetch for a slight offline which considering how the sheep were was extremely good work. feel free to come to WA :p always a good weekend trailing out here!! July trial we have a south australian judge too

99 1/2 is impressive on a HXA trial..
-
they should make a business out of ramps.. its well built too...
-
i'm sure its abit late, first question should be.. 1. why are you giving it up? 2. what training has it done 3. what do you feed it 4. how often do you excersise 5. any bad habbits 6. any funny querks... 7. list of commands
-
my boy is now HSAs now to work on B course and ducks :p
-
my bc bitch does herding and agility training on heat.. no real difference, it affects my boy though.. he's more interested in her!
-
face judging is why external people to the dog world don't show dogs... I'm the only new border collie showing in WA for at least 2 years.. its just impossible to get into the circle of friends and when face happens you get very disheartened.. in dog sports people are accepting and you see agility, herding and obedience and all other types growing fast!!

i responded to this same question in the other thread .. email me [email protected]
