When a mixed breed is super cute!!!
carolineh1 replied to RuralPug's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Love the pics! This is one of my favourite rescue mutts I follow on Instagram "mysterypibble" -
I would suggest going either through a reputable rescue who has their dogs in foster care (past just the initial settling in period) or an shelter dog that has some known history (ie surrender info). You can get some absolutely fantastic dogs "2nd hand" so to speak and I don't think it's worth limiting yourself to certain breeds based on breed traits. Of course some traits are going to lend themselves more than others to their situation, but it's just as important to look at the individual dog's personality. A nice corgi, jack Russell, foxy or beagle type could fit the bill

Thanks for your comments guys - obviously it's a hard call with senior dogs, but in the case of Mojo he came in with nothing done, and has had: - microchip - C5 vaccination - flea and worming - heartworm test - full blood screen - castration - full dental - bilateral entropian surgery - 2 months+ of boarding, feed and maintenance (while on a weight-gain diet too) + council registration fee (legal requirement) (Total happiness: priceless) His adoption fee of $365 is more than reasonable, I feel. However, we are always happy to consider alternatives for the seniors - if there's a genuinely great home for him whose circumstances might restrict them from paying an upfront adoption fee, by all means they can contact us :)

Mojo from Sydney Dogs and Cats Home is a 13yr old Rotti who's come a looooong way since arriving in care. Adoption profile here

Haven't seen this posted yet, but admin feel free to delete if already posted somewhere else http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/the-sydney-dogs-and-cats-home-is-in-need-of-saving-after-it-was-issued-with-an-eviction-deadline-to-leave-its-current-home-20150328-1m6j3f.html Ken and Ella (featured in the article) have been adopted now too

She's welcome to email me - [email protected] about surrendering. We've had so many adoptions and reclaims lately we're happy to take on dogs for rehoming :)

Looking into our processes at work for a better method! So, for those that work, or have worked, in kennels - what detergents, cleaners, disinfectants and methods do you use? How about daily clean versus super-clean (ie. when an animal goes home etc)?

SOCARES is having a bit of a meltdown at the moment I've noticed, and I think they share around their 16D so wouldn't be surprised if these were one of their wayward members..

Does anyone have extra info on this story? "Ms Isbester owned three Staffordshire terriers - Izzy, Jock and Bub - which had been involved in a number of attacks on other dogs after repeatedly escaping from her backyard in The Basin, east of Melbourne." On top of an alleged injury to a person. From the article, it appears to be another Save Hugo-esque story - totally irresponsible owners taking little to no responsibility. :mad ://www.theage.com.au/victoria/legal-battle-to-save-dog-izzy-will-go-to-high-court-20140915-10h1e5.html

At What Age Do We Stop Getting New Dogs?
carolineh1 replied to Aleksandra 157's topic in General Dog Discussion
I believe as long as you have a 'backup', and have taken into consideration your own experience, energy levels and limitations, there's no right or wrong age. Anyone at any time can fall ill or become injured (or die) at any age, so really everyone should think about what contingency plan they have in place. There are plenty of 'older' pets looking for homes, that only need a few more years of love and attention. We have a lovely older lady who adopts every year or so a truly ancient dog, just to give him/her a home. She lost her Foxy a few weeks ago to bladder cancer, and came and adopted a 14yr Jack Russell owner surrender, who had a mass off her hip removed just the other day. This lovely couple doesn't mind how long the dog has left, she just wants someone to spoil and for companionship, and sees this as her way of giving back to the dog community (after many years of "full" dog ownership) -
Looking for recommendations of brands of cage-style muzzles. The last few council hold dogs have eaten plastic ones left hanging on their kennel doors (grr..). Would like a few different styles so can adapt to different nose shapes. Needs to be sturdy for dog/handler safety (we walk council dangerous dogs on these) but reasonably priced as we are only a charity shelter Any suggestions?

Love the pictures! How adorable :D

Because of his neurological condition, he wasnt available for adoption until they had done some further testing to identify exactly what the problem was. He was sent into foster care with a local family (who I recognised from their cheeky Sammy being impound a few months ago!) in the interim. I'm glad he's been approved to adoption now and will hopefully find his new forever home soon

Jumping on the wagon late here - I'm at a shelter in Sydney and would love additional contacts for working opportunities for high-drive dogs if anyone has suggestions :)

Bondi Vet "sachi" Dog Attack Victim
carolineh1 replied to carolineh1's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've watched that happen in a few threads recently and it is a real shame - both for the dogs and for the people who time and again comment, turning it into a flame war regardless of the original post or topic -

Thanks to all involved :) Milo went to NSW Samoyed Breed Club Rescue last weekend, where he was continue to be assessed and rehabilitated and depending on his response to treatment, be placed for adoption as a special-needs boy down the track!

I often cringe at the stories on Bondi Vet (and similar shows), but was pleasantly surprised in tonight's episode, where a small Terrier mix named Sachi was treated for dog bite injuries sustained in a dog park. There was no hype/speculation about the breed of other dog involved, and it was revealed at the end that Sachi had been the instigator! There was footage of Sachi sitting on the owner's lap during hospital discharge, barking her little head off at every other dog in the waiting room. The vet, Lisa Chimes, spoke about a definite need for re-training on the owners' part, keeping her on a leash, and no more dog parks if she's going to continue picking fights. It's not often you see these cases without the 'poor me' little dog being shown as the poor, innocent victim, and all-out war on the 'big vicious bull-breed'.

Hi Bjelkier I've just sent a PM via Facebook so hopefully that goes through. I think maybe I was looking at an old version of your website - I called a number listed on there who directed me to a Mel with 2 phone numbers that I've left messages on the last few days. My work email was playing up today so didn't get a chance to shoot anything through unfortunately. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the idea Dame Danny's Darling - I think we might have a bottle or two donated I can try and dig out :) Anything's worth a go!

We currently have a male Samoyed at work at the moment we are looking to transfer to rescue. He has some neurological deficits which would need further workup/diagnosis as the original owner hasn't given us any indication of what's causing it, aside from "he's always done that" - head tilting, off-balance, circling while walking. Seems to wax and wane with stress, and has 'settled' down since he arrived a few weeks ago. He's a gorgeous boy, seems dog social (not cat tested yet) and quite sweet. I've chatted to ABR, who are currently full, and have tried to get in contact with AMRA and the Samoyed Club without success so far - any other suggestions? Thanks in advance :) He's located in south Sydney area NSW
