i guess it was that they were a little bit more solid in body shape our previous boy was a staffy, he'd been sat on, walked on, loved lots, and had always been there for our Autistic son.Dog are cleaver they know there is something a little diffrent with kids like my Son.It's an amazing bond a dog makes with a child with special needs, but i have seen it go wrong too many times, with a dog getting hurt unintentionally by the child, and the dog either ends up snaping at the child,or being too scared to interact. Afterall there is just not the childs welfare to consider, but the dogs as well, and i've seen it time and time again, that the dog ends up being rehomed ( or worse), cause it just isnt working. this is just my opinion, from a parent who has a child like the origional poster, her son may not be as serverly Autistic as mine, so he may be more aware as to what is around him

i'm not sure how your son is with dogs, but there is no way i would have a whippet with my son, he sometimes isnt as careful where he puts his feet. i think they are a great little dog, but my concern would be that the child could unintentionally hurt the dog, i guess it would be the same for a JRT too. we had a beagle on our list of breeds, but ended up going with our girl who is an ex renbury poundie. does your son have a preference in size? My ASD son loves them big, the bigger the better for him, he used to love the dane x at the dog park

We have 2 kelpie x with our Autistic son if i was doing it all again, i would get an adult dog, either from a reliable rescue or from a breeder and i wouldnt go too small, it needs to be big enough that it doesnt feel threatened by any sudden or eratic movments, and that it can get away if needed good luck, i'm sure you will find the right dog for your family our first dog was a staffy, he was ideal with our boy

i have a very good boarding Kennel that i use here, and am happy for them to make the call about who my boy plays with while there. They know him quiet well, and he is very submisive towards other dogs. He loves going, and is spoilt rotten when he is there. He was even allowed into their house one cold weekend when he was the only dog in, and spent the night on the floor in front of the open fire with his kids. he always comes home happy and exausted, and it's nice to know that he's had a great time while he's been there.

we have K9, named by OH huge Dr who fan, after the Dr's faithful traveling companion. we also have Jess, she made that choice herself a cockatiel named Bird (he belongs to the autistic son) we used to have a budgie called blacky, he was all yellow and loved to throw a tenis ball, a SBT named Mack,(as in the truck)

I think it depends a lot on the child my 12 year old loves our two,and would do anything for them.she has been with us each time we have added to the family. when we got our staffy, she had no say in which one we got, that was the breeders choice, she was only very young, but helped to pick lead, toys etc.she wasnt there when he was PTS, but understands why it had to happen. K9 came to us, and i think he is were she has developed her understanding of animals in need, he had been dumped and was emancipated, but she loved him and saw he needed our love, and kindness. this was also obvious when it became time to add to our pack again, and she knew that we wouldnt be bringing a dog home with us if it wasnt the right dog.she also wanted to give a dog a home that really needed it( very proud of her ), so when i thought i had found the one, we took her and her youngest brother to meet Jess at renbury, it was at first sight between the 2 of them, and there is still and i think always will be, a very special bond between them. my daughter helps to feed them, train them and play with them, and helps walk (only with us with her).she is a smart kid, way beyond her years, but is only 12.she always buys them things with her own money like toys and treats.they dont seem to mind :D

thanks for the imput. i dont know this person , she is just a friend of a friend, and when i read that she was looking to rehome them and they were undesexed, alarm bells went off in my head, it wasnt till i said to her that people might try to get them , to be breeding machines that she actually thought of it. thanks and i will pass on the ideas given i have suggested she get them desexed first too

Hi, a friend of a friend needs to rehome her 2 girls. they have recently moved to a property and the girls(Gemma and Bessie) are not copeing with farm life. she had them on facebook looking for homes for them, but i just expressed my concern that they might be used as breeding machines by BYB's. i have convinced her to try and contact some rescue orgnisations tht maybe able to help. i'm in nsw, so not familiar whith who operates in the area. can anyone point me in the right direction of rescue groups in the area please?

K.9- he gets K, K-man, little dog, big fella, hairy butt maximus Jess -Jessy,Jessy-bessy, lanky long legs and they both come to all of them

based on looks, and looks only - no particular order 1. border collie- black and white or red and white 2. staffy- black brindle 3. blue merle Aussie sheperd 4. lab-black 5. sheltie no.6 would be old english sheep dog

nearly 5 years ago we were visiting a small local ( 40 mins by car away ) town, we were at the river and found a small pup, he was skin and bones, it was near dark, so we door knocked the few properties that were close by, a local had been trying to get a ranger to come and get him for the last week.called the ranger, got a message service.so with no options we took him home with us, we wernt about to leave him there to starve to death. the next day i called the council,they didnt want to know, left yet another message for the ranger took him to my vet ,no chip was present, the vet diddnt think he would survive, he was that malnourished called local radio station and placed him on their lost and found, placed ads on the local supermarket notice boards finally heard from the ranger nearly a week later, he told me that if we didnt want to give it a home we could either , surender it to my local pound, and due to his condition he would be PTS, bring back to him, and he would have him PTS we decided to give him the home he needed, i have found other animals, they seeem to like coming over when they cant find there way home,i walk them down to the local vet, or call the ranger, and they deal with them.

i had cats growing up, but have since only had dogs i too would probably have a cat here now, but dont like the idea f them roaming, and would want to get a cat run for it, which we dont really have the room for OH doesnt like cats at all

my girl came to us from a pound at about 18 months old they had been calling her Kelly, but she didnt respond to it and we thought a new start needs a new name, she was without name for a good week , we tried alsorts of names, but i called Jess, and she responded, so she is jess, i wouldnt worry about your boy needing a name simillar to rhys, so just go with something that you all like

The SBT we had ate most things think it's a staffy thing but his favourite thing was right shoes, only the right, never the left watering systems, hoses, buckets, kids toys, the kids cubby house we still have the cubby house, and the teeth marks brings back memories of when he was here neither of my current 2 are really chewers, but Jess loves to baby the soft toys , then guts them

this is a great idea my daughter loves to give to others at christmas, and i'm sure she will jump at the chance to send a parcel over to a detection dog. what kind of toys do you send, and can you send them treats,like smakoes, or is this not possible due to customs.

we bought a 07 tarago 12 months ago we needed the room for a special needs child and for the rest of the family, furry kids included. the dogs sit in the 3rd row comfortly with my daughter, other 2 middle row. we have plenty of room, but i couldnt tell you about fitting creates etc in the car as we dont show, but we sure do load it with plenty of "stuff" when we go away, and the dogs are comfy in their seats. we looked at the teritory, and they were just to heavy on fuel for us
