Hey Kavik - I'm going to do crate games with both Flynn and Spencer. I am really interested to see the results with Spencer. I pulled the crate out from under the house and F10'd it and we're ready to start this weekend! You can do it with a wire crate - you don't need a plastic one.

Helen I hope you don't mind me adding this to your thread .... I am very curious about the thundershirt myself for Spencer but I was also looking at the anxiety wrap http://www.anxietywrap.com.au/. The difference between the 2 is that the anxiety wrap has straps that wrap around a dog’s hind legs. Apparantly when a dog is in full panic mode, it can lose “sensation” in its hind legs which causes further panic and anxiety. The straps add pressure to that hind leg area. Has anyone tried the anxiety wrap?

Do any DOLers participate in the annual Scotland Island to Church Point dog race? I had never heard of it before and was chatting to a dog friend who mentioned it. I googled and found this link Sounds like a hoot! My spaniel & kelpie could do it but not sure the little westies could paddle for 500 metres!!

We currently have a young great dane at our agility training club. Never seen a dane do agility before and I must admit it is a little weird seeing a dane do agility. However, he seems to be having fun and gets thru the tyre fine. I suspect he will never be a speed demon :D

I have a couple of memory foam beds for my westie with HD. He really seems to like them and always goes to either of the 2 memory foam beds when he has a sleep. I purchased mine from overseas and it cost me a small fortune in shipping because memory foam beds are heavy. I couldn't find any local places which had what I wanted for him at the time. Google memory foam and you will find some local places which cut pieces to size. Personally I think the memory foam is terrific - as dianed said - it shows no sign of compacting (the other dogs like sleeping on it too!!). Also look at getting some Glyde for your lab as well as some PetArk PetGesic (powdered cumerone - natural anti-inflammatory) to help with joint stiffness & inflammation. Try to avoid putting your lab onto Rymadil as it can have adverse affects on your dog long term. Try to look at more natural options. My westie also gets acupuncture once a month (along with glyde & cumerone) and it really does wonders for him. If you have a bit of cash to spare - google adicell.

Misconception about westies – people think they are lapdogs ….. they are NOT … they are terriers who can be stubborn!! Misconception about Maltese (not my breed) – they are NOT terriers ….. they ARE lapdogs! So if you want a white lapdog - get a Maltese and not a westie!

That's good to know, without references the first page of his website alone would stop me using him. 'connecting through intuition' and a 'magical bond' just sound like weasel words. Mind you I have that problem with a lot of marketing speak. I met him once and he struck me as a genuine animal lover - from memory I think he's from South America or somewhere around there.

Monelite - some rescuers use his services. He's in Rouse Hill and seems like a nice guy who knows what he's doing. Ruthless might know a little bit about him I think.

On Blacktown Road (Sth Windsor) - between The Driftway & Richmond Golf course there is a forest of tall trees on the left hand side of the road. The trees are planted in rows. It must be some sort of tree plantation or something. Whenever I drive past there I always think it would be a great photography spot. The lines & angles would be fun to play with.

I think it's a bedlington terrier. How great are the photo's!! I love the white puli shot (met one at an agility trial the other week - never knew they came in white!!) and I really like the black & white springer spaniel pic as well ..... reminds of my boy Spencer!

If you do decide to get a fabric covered lounge - consider ordering extra fabric which can then be used as throw overs. My couches were re-upholstered a few years back from ocean blue to a lovely plain mocha - I ordered extra fabric and sewed the edges. They are permanently on the couches and get chucked into the wash once a week. The throw overs keep the couch covers in fabulous condition and if you get a good quality fabric - washing the throw overs every week won't affect the colour much. You can barely notice the slight difference in colour of my throw overs vs couch covers after 5 years! The next couch will be micro-suede. My dining chairs are micro-suede and are so easy to wipe clean. A dinner guest spilled red wine all over one of the chairs once and I just wiped the wine off with a wet cloth and there was no stain, nothing! Amazing fabric. People with young skin kids should invest in micro-seude!!!

Personally I believe it's better to have 2 dogs. Two who get on really well and are able to have some fun together. It eases the mind when you're awya at work knowing they have company. Here are some more pics of the lovely Zahra who Reverend Jo is fostering in SA:

Maybe this will make you feel a bit better Lillysmum - your vet fees sound very reasonable compared to Sydney prices ..... in April I spent $1580 at the emergency vet & my vet when my kelpie ended up with a gaping wound around his eye ...... then in June, another $1800 was spent at the emergency vet on my 9 year old westie who had a possible obstruction which started out as bloat .......

UPDATE 3.45pm: TWO Siberian huskies blamed for fatally tearing apart a grandmother's west highland terrier have been captured by the council. An 89-year-old grandmother watched in horror as two dogs ripped out her west highland white terrier's stomach in Preston early this morning. Council officers found the dogs at a Preston home at 1.30pm after a tip-off from a woman who passing them in the street and saw blood on one of the animals. Darebin Council mayor Vince Fontana said the dogs had been impounded and taken to the Lost Dogs Home in Melbourne. “One dog is registered with the council, while the second dog is unregistered,'' Cr Fontana said “With the owner's consent, Darebin Council collected Hamish's body from her property earlier this morning,'' Cr Fontana said. “We have launched an investigation and will retain the body to use as evidence, as part of a prosecution case against the owners. “Its now up to the courts to decide the fate of the Siberian Huskies.’’

"They just threw Hamish in the air and I knew he was gone.'' The 14-year-old dog's blood is still all over Mrs Anderson's front yard. Mrs Anderson said she was powerless to stop her treasured friend from being killed. "If I had stepped in, the other one would have attacked me and at my age, I couldn't fight them off, I'd be dead,'' she said. "Hamish never had a chance.'' The dogs, described by Mrs Anderson as "grey and white alsatians'', but which the council now believes are huskies, escaped around the corner into Sapphire St but have not been located. After the attack, the frightened grandmother escaped to her neighbours, who put Hamish in a box. "She had to put him in a plastic bag because the flies were already getting to him,'' Mrs Anderson said. "I can't bear to look at the box with him lying there.'' Darebin Council Director of City Work Michael Ballock said animal control officers and local law officers were searching Preston to find the dogs. “We have received conflicting descriptions of the dogs, but we believe both dogs are Husky breed, rather than German Shepherds, as reported earlier this morning,'' Mr Ballock said. “Our primary concern this morning has been to get the dogs under control.'' “We believe neither dog wore a collar or lead, and believe the animals have escaped from the backyard of a residence.'' Council officers have taken the terrier's body from Mrs Anderson's home. “We have launched an investigation and will retain the body to use as evidence, as part of a prosecution case against the owners.''
