  1. Not one to judge.. Next time you walk into KFC and smile while you eat, think about where your chicken comes from.. Next time you eat your hamburger and smile, think about where the mince came from.. Oh and Vegans.. yes you do just eat vegies but if you buy them from a store can you be sure that blood & bone weren't used to fertilise your food or the excrement from battery hens wasnt used used to prepare the soil.. Unless you are a person pictured in that photo you have no right to judge.. Maybe the smile is rewarding the dog for locating a cat.. Who knows ?? Understanding & correct information are the keys to animal rescue and public education .... Judgement and blame have no place here.
  2. Saw the huge floods in Hawkesbury over 20 years ago.. Water up to power lines on flats & up to pub from river side but pound and High school remained dry.. All access roads to Oakville, Mcgraths Hill, Windsor & North richmond went under.. Windsor road used to flood near Riverstone and back up into windsor downs area.. Remember the vet surgery ( Rob Zammit) used to flood from creek at the back.. Think dogs themselves would be ok..
  3. I guess if it was me I'd take the dog back to rehome.. Hopefully with some manners.. I'd feel like I was letting the dog down to leave it in an unwanted home.. Just my personal opinion.. I did take back a dog who left as a puppy and he rehomed quite easily.. He was always a lovely pup and I knew he could do better.. I DIDNT refund any money and even asked for a donation towards finding him a home.. His vet work had all been completed so apart from daily care he didnt cost me anything.. In the interest of your rescue group I believe an offer of some sort would make for good publicity.. something we all need.. What type of dog is it and would it be rehomable ?
  4. Kennel Cough is a bit like the flu.. Some have worse symptoms than others.. I personally would go to vet to confirm.. I have a dog with hayfever & allergies that looks like KC (runny nose & red eyes) but no respiratory issues. Best to have lungs & heart checked by vet to rule out any other possible issues. KC can take up to six weeks of medication to fully clear... Make sure there is no interaction with unvaccinated dogs.. When booking in at vet let them know that you believe is KC so they can make sure no others are in clinic..
  5. Just a thiought too.. You mentioned time for chip changes.. You can go on line and change details on Austalasian Animal register (Australia wide) at any time. Is a small fee but worth it & you can give owner certificate of Chip details.
  6. I offer a 2 week trial with refund if not suited.. I also go out of my way to make contact within those two weeks usually every second or third day to start with then offer assistance as required. I have only had one dog return.. No fault of his just too smart for family.. He would not listen to commands as they were too soft. That was 3 months after rehoming and didnt offer refund but suggested I assist with finding another dog.. I dont fill my spare space til after the two week period so that I am able to take the dog back at short notice. Most people know in that time frame if it is going to work or not. If a dog was injured/sick in that time.. most families would persevere I think as they have formed an attachment to the animal.. It's a personal thing I guess and distance would have to be taken into account when anything does go wrong.. If it is a blatant neglect type thing I would want the dog back anyway and would wear the costs just to make sure it is safe. A pre adoption illness that was not found til later would also be a time when I wouldnt worry about cost just getting the dog healthy. Lots of factors to take into consideration which makes us more diligent when rehoming..
  7. How bout we do the adult thing.. ?? Welcome Needy Paws rescue & Kenreb.. DOL is a resource tool for many carers and rescue groups throughout australia.. As a new member would you like to introduce yourselves and of course how we can contact your members. Some things that other people might like to know are : Where are you based..? Are you a breed specific rescue..? What is the major focus of your group..? I.e. cats, dogs, sick animals, working dogs, small dogs etc.. How can other carers/ groups help you? This would enable other members to contact you regarding a needy animal in your area. Thanks..
  8. This new group are not technically rescue.. They do not take into foster homes but assist with direct adoption through the pound.. They do not currently have a 16D exemption.. Their hearts are in the right place but as a new group they could definitely benefit with some guidance from other rescue groups. This new group is dedicated to Griffith pound and are a good contact for any animals located there.
  9. OMG.. Didnt know these things were happening.. How could anyone justify retaining an animal that has bitten a child.. and not just a nip but a full on neck bite !! I was horrified as I went through the FB page..
  10. I think it has to be a personal or rescue group decision.. I have a set criteria for what rescues I will take as do many others.. I guess it does sometimes come down to costs but also the animals welfare is taken into account. Many of you have chatted with me about Jake the sick kelpie I have.. He did not appear to have any issues when he first arrived at 8 weeks old.. He is now my golden boy (gold credit card) as every week there have been health issues.. He is currently going through allergies and requires antihistamines and pain meds on most days.. Would I have taken him on had I known the problems and long term expenditure.. possibly not. Now that he is here though he gets the best of everything.. I have never asked my rescue group for payment of his vet bills as I had the option of pts at the start. The way I figure it is it was my choice to perservere so it's my choice to pay the vet bill.. Just my opinion..
  11. Our vet will not desex any animal under 6 months.. This too has had it's issues.. If the animal was going locally I have booked the desex and collected and had it desexed on the due time.. In the interim I have advised any family that chooses to take a young pup that this is part of the criteria for adopting..(And had them sign agreement) Small faced dogs are high risk.. Pugs,Boxers,British bull dogs ......... ( the list goes on ) and sighthounds are the biggest complications we have seen in the surgery. ( Sight hounds due to muscle/fat ratio do not deal well with some aneasthesia) Also small breeds are prone to complications. Anything under 5 kgs increases the risk factors.. Your vet should have told you this prior to surgery. Sorry for your loss and hope that others can take this into account for future reference.
  12. Lots of rescue groups in Canberra.. CARA, ARF, CPR could all use these I'm sure.. Try some of the FB pages for them as carers do not always check here..
  13. The pup had broken hind leg..(visible) No pain meds and we were unable to xray as owner would not stay... Many people do not know how to treat a fracture and I would not advocate self treatment unless they have the necessary experience & pain relief for an animal.. (My opinion) I cant elaborate details as was a court case recently. Was merely trying to help advise 'HOW' RSPCA can help them.
  14. Having dealt with RSPCA in regards to a cruelty case the best thing to do is to complete a statement of details about the incident.. RSPCA will attend to all medical needs of the animal and their investigators will usually follow up within the week. The ONLY way to have the person prosecuted is to surrender to RSPCA and let their vets make a report. If the current treating vet can also make a report that too would help prosecute.. Have done the same to a person who refused to have a broken leg repaired at vet surgery. This person was then prosecuted.. Person who alerts RSPCA does not get disclosed. p.s. there may be security camera vision available from railway station if acted on quickly.
  15. Must be a way we can add a 'like' button here.. OH has at times grumbled as he cleans up the mess from the four legged children but supports every rescue I take in.. The son and grandkids who share with us are awesome too. They all know that 'Nanna' is addicted to helping those who cannot speak for themselves. Granddaughters have gained a huge sense of responsibility caring for the sick and injured that we bring home and are proud to tell the world that we have rescue pups at home. As for the four legged children they have adapted and changed with each new rescue. The look from the cattle dog as he sees another new dog come through the door is sometimes one of 'not another one'.. He too has his place though as leader of the pack showing them the ropes etc. I lost my best 'socialising' dog this year. My 19 year old JRT would introduce himself and passively show the newbies how to interact. He never once growled at them, just gave them a knowing look. To those who stand beside us a HUGE We wouldnt be doing this without you !!
  16. If you do take them as 'adopted' try to get something in writing so that you can prove they were handed over to you.. Even vet details etc.. the more paperwork you have the less chance she can claim they were stolen. If she asks why just tell here you need to get microchipped for council registration and they need confirmation that the animal is yours.. OR take a chip form for transfer with you and have it signed by old owner.. Tread carefully as once you take them, desex and rehome them they may come back to bite you if you dont cover your ass.. Good Luck..
  17. He's doing amazingly well.. The other pup is 3 months old now and getting too big for him to play with.. He's had his first fight too !! Because he has been so sheltered his social skills are a bit skewed.. He decided to pester the other two dogs in the yard and all I heard was his screams.. Thought his throught had been cut but it was just his pride taking a beating.. He forgot how small and fragile he really is.. Not a mark on him though.. :D Guess that is the next step for him.. learning how to be a real dog !! Everyone calls him my child as he will seek security from me if anything goes wrong.. Think part of it is me not wanting to let him go too.. Have seen how sick he was and just cherish every good day he has.. Thanks for all the supportand I will keep you updated.
  18. Jake the TEACUP KELPIE.. had his first big day out at Belco pets re-oening.. He had a great da and met lots of new people.. He's doing well and is off most medications.. something I dreamed of but didnt think would ever happen..
  19. WOW... Jake is now close to six months old and the current regime seems to be working.. He's holding his own despite some quiet days.. He's become the spoilt brat though and knows he can get away with most things. I've attached some more photos.. The other dog in the picture is BJ who is now 12 weeks old and really settling in well.. Have decided Jake can start a new breed : TEACUP KELPIES !!!
  20. Jake is doing really well.. Have kept hom on regular carprofen & calcium & he seems to be holding his own.. Will update wth some new pics soon.. On a sadder note My old boy Spud was pts last week.. Had a good innings ( 19 years) and was the best mate I've ever had.. He had lost the gleam from his eye and wasnt eating.. I knew the time would come but was hoping it never would.. I pray that he's sent Jake some of his fighting spirit to keep going..
  21. The mayhem continues.... Jake is still doing well and now has a new off-sider.. A little kelpie pup who was surrender thru work.. Both boys have had us in fits of laughter as they do laps of the house.. All fun til they get under your feet.. Have had to start doing the puppy shuffle again. Here are some pics of the boys in their quieter moments.. BJ is a foot puppy and sleeps where ever your feet are.
  22. Here are some photos of the terror at large in the beautiful afternoon sun today.. ( Yes it does get sunny in Canberra !)
  23. Jake the terror has taken over my sweet little man... LOL.. He is happily bouncing around the house again and this time we are maintaining his Calcium supplements in the hope that he does not have a bad turn again.. Seems to be a bit cyclic in nature.. He has a few good weeks then hits the down hill again.. I watch him for any changes and medicate him as soon as he slumps.. Thanks for all the good thoughts.. I'm sure he knows.. Fingers crossed he stays this healthy !!
  24. Those vibes must be working.. When I got home from work today he ran across the carpet to meet me !!! Then promptly flopped on the floor in front of me .. Hasnt done much since but I know he's telling me he's ok.. That's what this is all about, the special moments.. Thanks to all for your support
  25. Thanks Robyn.. He's improving slowly.. Didnt lose the strength in front end this time and is alreday trying to stand again.. Didnt need his pain meds or antibiotics so far.. just rear end let him down.. Back on Calcium supplements in meantime.. Loves his heated cat bed and pokes his nose out to make sure we havent forgotten him.. His growth plates are swollen but not painful.. Hoping he will be walking by Sunday.. Oh takes turns taking him out onto grass for pee & poo.. At least his housetraining has been usefull.. for a quick recovery..
