Jake - Little Kelpie Boy
garnali replied to garnali's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Vet thought he would have grown out of his problems by 12 months.. Basically his growth was stunted due to lack of ability to absorb calcium.. His responses are a bit like leukemia.. High white cell counts.. Prone to infection and allergies.. Food intolereances etc.. Biggest problems now seem to be his social development.. I dont think he suffered any brain damage as functions well with daily living.. He is highly anxious which can set off another bout of pain which shuts him down for days.. He gets a bone type pain that stops him eating and walking.. On these days he gets Carprofen & Clinacin, for pain & infections. They seem to help. I guess I'm looking for ways to socialise him with minimal anxiety.. Have tried him on natural alternatives such as herbal anxiety meds.. Have tried the thundershirt.. Crating him increases his stress.. Is there anything else people have tried that might help?? Have spent many hours and dollars trying to find a solution.. His current playmate Murphy is really tolerant.. He's about 14 weeks old cattle cross pup with a beautiful nature.. They still are seperated for short time-out periods so that Murphy doesnt get bombarded with Jake's full on approach.. Murphy will be a failed foster.. He's already one of the family. I'm thinking Jake would be best as an only dog with mature people who have the time (and finances) to manage his medical conditions.. Dont know that I could ask anyone to take on his issues though.. It has been a long 12 months so far and improvement has been sporadic.. He's still the size of a 6 month kelpie with pencil thin legs and minimal muscle mass.. Is anyone savvy with herbal treatments for the absorbtion of vitamins B & D ?? These seem to be lacking.. Have also been suggested to try selenium as an additive.. Has anyone used this?? Calcium absorbtion is also another issue.. How can I ensure he is absorbing enough?? ( Scars on his back were from sub-cutaneous calcium as a pup. Did not have strong enough veins for IV. ) Any ideas, thoughts would be great. Thanks for he hug T. They are always welcome -
Jake - Little Kelpie Boy

OK... Jake is now 12 months old and I am open to suggestions... As a sickly, under socialised dog he is now being picked on by the 'home' dogs. I have broken up numerous scraps in the yard and he usually comes off second best. I have tried only having rescues that are smaller and younger than him.. I've tried older sedate dogs but he seems to get under their skin and ends up screaming as though his throat has been cut whenever they assert some authority.. He is currently the house dog but it means I cant have the others inside without constant supervision.. He screams when put in the HUGE crate (for his own safety). I cant get a lead or harness to stay on due to his scarring.. He backflips in a thunder shirt.. Seems to irritate his nerves on the scar on his back. Dont get me wrong he is a lovely boy. He has been ill at least one week in every four.. This comes from his previous illness.. He gets infections easily.. I am attempting to get him desexed and teeth and scar accessed during a 'good' week. I cant even touch him on a bad week as he bites in defence while everything is hurting... He has bitten me when in pain and the look of fear is painful to watch.. I've tried treat/rewards for good behaviour but he is a poor eater & this only works occasionally.. My dream would be to get him out and walking on a harness to see the real world and have some positive interactions... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. I have had the heart breaking thoughts that I am keeping him going even though he is in pain and maybe he really wasnt meant to survive.. His bad days are heartbreaking.. He wont eat, walk,or even acknowledge me on the worst days... -
Thinking of you today.. Last year I let my 19 year old JRT, who was my soul mate, take the journey.. Decision day was the hardest.. He knew and I knew and we cuddled for hours.. They know you care... Nothing can take your your pain away but I hope my Spud is there to greet Tara and show her the way.. Hugs for you and your family..

Need Some Advice With My Rescue Dog
garnali replied to knitmehappy's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Hi Jackie, Welcome and thank you for sharing your concerns... As a foster care many of the dogs have 'attached' to me and I find this both comforting and frustrating.. Seems that the first person to show them love and affection becomes their primary person and they exclude all others. I've dealt with it in many ways depending on the dog. One way was to have another person feed and give treats.. That way the 'care' was shared between the humans and they acknowledge that even the little people in the house are higher up in hierarchy than them. They will start to look at all humans with a respect and anticipation of good things to come. I also get other people to take the dogs on walks & participate in the training.. again a respect and trust bonding time.. If you have an off leash park that is securely fenced try and find a time when there are less people there.. Those that visit during the weekdays will often be a good source of information for socialising. Even check the park on your own a few times and ask if there is someone who is willing to have their dog play with yours.. Obedience training will reinforce all of the things you are currently doing and will be a great benefit for you all. Keep up the good work and he is very lucky to have you.. -
As a child we too raced greyhounds.. They were our pets at the same time.. When each greyhound retired it became the house dog.. Slept on the bed, Lounged around the house, Went on car trips and was the BEST temperament with children & small animals.. People perceive that a greyhound is scary as they wear muzzles.. They are really a perfect calm house dog.. Low shedding & no smell to them.. And they dont need a lot of exercise but are happy to join the family unit on a daily walk. As with all rescue's I would highly recommend going through a rescue group that has had the dog in care with a foster family for a few weeks at least.. They could then tell you all of it's habits.. Happy searching... And yes you need the love at first sight thing to really bond with your new dog..

New Fosters.. Guess The Breed Mix Time...
garnali replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Cattle X Terrier X Lab. ...... Maybe a small mix of JRT or Dacshund for the body length.. Guessing about 8 weeks old.. -
You could buy a sensor that starts a recording of a barking dog.. Not too difficult to find.. ( $2.00 shops or ebay) Your dog may hear the barking and join in... I have a sensor that was a toy security guard figurine.. It says things like "Back off buddy" "You're not wanted here" ... My dogs hear it and go crazy.. No one could get in the gate without me knowing.. There are also sensor lights and alarms that you could try.. Not a good situation whichever way you look at it.. There are also security bracelet/buttons that can be set to call your phone when triggered. Lots of seniors who live alone have them... Try chatting with some of the groups that do home nursing etc.. They could tell you where to find them.. Good luck & God bless your dad.. He must be a lovely innocent man..

Foster Failures And Continued Fostering
garnali replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Must get a like button! ! Dogmad & T..... You are so right. Lots of people like to sit in judgement but at the end of the day the people (and pets) that matter know how wonderful you are!!!! -
Foster Failures And Continued Fostering
garnali replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Have to agree I would have refused unless all family members were in agreeance & have done that in the past.. Family had current dog (Staffie) bonded with male in house.. Wife wanted new pup for herself.. Hubby never showed any interest and kids were not really excited.. I refused their adoption application for a staffy puppy.. I dont want to see that pup back in pound because of family disagreements. And Padriac... Yes all family members are included in foster carer application.. House & yard check are also part of the deal.. Same as if adopting. On Foster Failures I believe a good carer will have at least one foster failure.. It shows they care about the animals placed in their homes. I have one.. Wouldn't give him up for the world.. He's still my little baby and helps with any other fosters. :D -
Jake - Little Kelpie Boy
garnali replied to garnali's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Hi all... WOW.. Jake has hit the 12 month mark.. cant believe it.. We've had our tears and problems over the last few months but I have learnt how to manage most of them and his best asset is another pup to encourage him to eat. If they eat he eats.. His only problems now seem to be teeth crowding and the scar on his back seems to be twitching a nerve occasionally.. Once he's put some more weight on he will be going to vet to desex and teeth check all in one go.. He is such a horrible patient these days that we have to sedate him even for an oral exam.. His newest friend came from Goulburn yesterday.. Banjo is a tiny cattle pup who was full of worms..First dead worm was nearly 15cm long !!!! If Banjo stays small he may be around for quite a while.. Cute little fella who is feeling a bit lost without his siblings.. Will try an remember to bring you updates Thanks again to all his followers.. Without you I dont know how I would have coped. -
Quarantine - Seems Not To Be Important Anymore
garnali replied to Bartok's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
The topic in the saved lists at the top describes quarantine measures that SHOULD be in place.. Parvo is the worst thing.. Stays in soil for a long time & can be very hard to eradicate.. Sealed concrete with a seperate drain system is the only true way to Quarantine..I know people who use their laundry or bathroom area for quarantine... I'm lucky that I have two yards, Concrete yard for new arrivals and grassed yard for my own dogs and long termers. Two weeks is the bare minimum to notice things like kennel cough.. Most pounds wil parvac the pups before collection which is helping control parvo. Guess once again it is a personal thing.. I've even had KC come from a dog who was with a different carer.. It's sometimes like playing with a loaded gun and each carer needs to know their limits. :D -
I take my fosters to their new home, where possible.. I advise how to introduce and when to step in if the interaction is too intense.. If some one brings their dog to meet a possible adoption I suggest an on lead intro in say a dog park or open area where they can interact on neutral territory.. I have my own dogs at home to consider when doing first introductions... My dogs may not interact with the person and dog that are visiting.. Also the foster dog may use my dogs as 'moral support' when meeting a potential friend. I guess the main thing is to have neutral territory if possible.. Have people that are dog savvy in regards to introductions.. Not stepping in too soon if there is a growl but also knowing when that growl is more than a warning. Foster carers usually have a good understanding of the foster dog and will know the limitations of that particular dog. I would not recommend direct adoptions from the pound unless you are certain that the dog will 'fit'into your home.. Rescue groups provide support for the new family regarding behavioural issues and most have a refund policy.. There are so many things to consider when introducing new animals.. I guess the main thing is being honest and upfront on both sides in regards to the adoption.. The more the humans work together the better the chances for the adoption to be successful..

So sad that we have lost both a little friend and a new foster carer through an irresponsible act by a rescue group.. I dont know who the group is but I would be seeking compensation if I was the carer. Wondering which group would just sign you up and hand you a dog.. All of our carers are house checked and given copies of foster carer agreement etc before even contemplating taking a dog.. The first dog a carer takes has usually been in care for a while so temp and needs are known.. Wouldnt expect a first time carer to quarantine & vet work a dog straight away... I recently rehomed a small dog who had had a tough start.. he was kicked & beaten and bit the person who was hurting him.. He was at risk of being listed as a dangerous dog because he defended himself.. I told everyone that had interest in him what had happened and he now resides in a family home where he is adored.. They needed to know that if he found himself in a tough situation that he would fight back.. If nothing else I hope this makes people wake up to the fact that not ALL dogs are rehomeable and some are in the pound for a reason..
-
Sounds like you have a perfect home Tunagirl.. Anyone that racks up huge vet bills is obviously caring for their animals. :D Would you like to adopt an Amstaff puppy??
-
Sad to think that rescue's have a difficult to deal with image but being on the other side maybe I can give some insight into what we have to deal with: I currently have 12 week old Amstaff pups that were orphaned and hand raised. All have lots of pink skin on face and ears ( sunburn easily) Of over 20 applications and numerous house checks etc I have only rehomed 1. Reasons for decline: 1. No fences ( but our other dog never ran away!) 2. Outside dog ( Yard did not have a blade of grass or tree for shelter. No kennel or shade areas. ) 3. Second Dog ( Hubby did not show any interest in wife getting a new dog. The comment was 'whatever'..) 4. Price ( could you drop the price to say $200.. only a pensioner.. vet work alone has been over $300 let alone the feeds for an orphan) The list of knockback reasons was huge.. I do however let people know why they are knocked back.. Even if they dont want to hear it.. Most of the applications would have been ok for an older less sun prone dog.. Oh and the one that did rehome is all white & lives both inside and out with owners who were besotted with him right from the start.
-
Some pounds dont charge that much.. Every pound must ensure dog is microchipped before release.. Some also require council rego. Some give discount desexing certificates that if taken to the right vet cut that cost to under $200.. The incentive is if you buy at petshop $600++, then desex etc will cost nearly $1000. Some pounds release for around $100.. Best thing to do is contact the pound.. Explain that you wish to save this dog. Ask if they have a desex program. Ask what cost of dog covers.. ( some are already parvo vacc. ) Some will cover vet work. Most rangers do not want to see the animal destroyed, especially a young dog and will try to help you..

Hawkesbury Urgent Pound Listings
garnali replied to AWDRI's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thought I'd just check the urgents again.. Can we clarify why 2 people have urgent Hawkesbury Lists.. One is very detailed with lots of updates .. The other has less info.. Getting confused between the two as both have comments from DOL'ers And yet infomation about saves is different.. SORRY have to ask.. Which one is correct and could we perhaps combine forces rather than running two lists ?? -
Hawkesbury Urgent Pound Listings
garnali replied to AWDRI's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I believe there were two hawkesbury threads runing which was very confusing. . They were posted by two different people. Can understand the confusion. . Not a personal attack just needed clarification. -
RADAR carers in Naranderra and Griffith areas are isolated and could always do with some help.. Update: Carers in Narranderra Leeton & Griffith look like being evacuated tomorrow.. Pounds are being used as refuge for stranded pets and could certainly use the support of anyone able to temp care while houses and fences are rebuilt.. Flood expected to peak on Saturday and with towns already isolated they are making do with what they have. Rescue groups in the area include.. RADAR, Needy Paws, Best Friends pet rescue.. Not to mention the Wagga rescue groups like Wagga Animal rescue.. Fernleigh has lots of boarding dogs now due to floods and cant take any more.. Thoughts are with those at imminent risk and those trying to clean up..

Head Of The Piaa Caught In The Act.
garnali replied to pandypam's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
All I am saying is that until we look at ourselves we cannot judge another.. We were not there when a feral cat was destroyed.. We dont KNOW the circumstances We are not there when livestock is detroyed for human consumption either.. Yet we assume it is humane.. For those that do not have facebook or have not seen the post. As PIAA President I understand that this photo may be upsetting to some. This photo was taken in the Mornington Sanctuary in the Kimberly in northern Australia as part of an Australian Wildlife Conservancy program to eradicate feral cats destroying native wildlife. This is a massive problem. One feral cat on the loose is understood to kill on average of 5 native animals in one day, which is in the order of 60 million native animals killed a day across the country. This cat was tracked and humanely shot under strict protocols and the photo serves to document this important program. Steve Austin Just remember that that one female cat has the posiblity of creating thousands of kittens who in turn can reproduce. They are not family pets. Most people would not hesitate to kill a germ carrying mosquito yet have strong views regarding feral animal eradication. I myself have no problem with the eradication of feral cats, dogs, goats, pigs, cane toads etc... As long as it is in a humane manner.
