  1. Well, if your staffy's in play drive and is focused on getting the ball, you are going to satisfy his 'play drive' by giving him the ball... If he was sitting in front of his food bowl waiting for your command, he's not exactly going to be happy with getting a tennis ball, right? (He'd be in food drive then) Is this right Steve? Just thought I'd test my knowledge after your seminar on the weekend! Is it fair to say Steve that keeping your dogs happy by being able to satisfy their natural drives you will have a more balanced/ happy dog because you are not depriving them of it..& a dog that will listen to your commands more because you give him what he needs?
  2. well, I don't even know where the hell Glendenning is anyway Pet barn was great, I had a hard time trying to stuff all the meat in the freezer though! Our electricity is connected to a farm and they need more power so are going to put our hot water on a timer :D so looks like another electrical device is outta the question at the moment Bloody pet shops! I have some left over stickers from "say no to animals in pet shops" if anyone wants one! I wanted one for my car and thought I may as well spread the word a bit more and buy a few to give to people. Maybe you'd like one Wendy & Griff when we meet up one day OK time to go feed the sooky-bubs (Tess is the winner in that department sooky la la )
  3. No caffiend42.. not THAT kind of meat market!!!!! Although, we may be able to find a couple of specimens to slaughter to feed our dogs in those places... sorry... have been drinking :drunk: :D red wine is going down good OH has gone to canberra for the weekend and left me all alone... lucky I have three big dogs to protect me! So here I am messaging again!! ...I always go off topic... the threads are kind of like a conversation anyway.. and they always change topics, don't they? hehe
  4. Get out Wendy! We were probably there at the same time... maybe you were the one who had to get the new bag of food coz it had a hole in it??!! Good shop... it is fantastic for dog food.. now just to get that chest freezer. You are welcome to visit here, Tess is a shocker on the lead, and I don't want to take her somewhere off lead when she's not my dog..too much responsibilty, maybe some recall practise first, anyway!
  5. ...I forgot to mention the 3 boxes of poo bags and the two doggy brushes :D I'm sure there's more, I just wrote the list from memory!!!! Hi neighbours!!!!!!!! I'm actually in Kemps Creek... yes we should get together, do you guys have dog-friendly-dogs? And Griff I see you frequent the pounds often, do you rescue/foster or do you like to just keep up to date with what's there and then post here? Wendy, I shop in St clair at the safeway...ooops I mean woolworths!! I'm the one looking for the reduced meat in the meat section..haha! But now since I found that Minchinbury shop I'll be going there, we eat ALOT of vegies and it's far more cheaper and more variety than woolies. I really can't stay on topic can I????? I'm going to petbarn TODAY! Plus the art shop coz I just got paid

  7. Yes pheebs you just sit there whistling and looking in the other direction ;) ;) Tess is very well mannered when it comes to food... you think Tess is a vacuum, well my dogs must be... ummm.. some big industrial hard core vacuuming machine :D my dogs eat so fast they almost choke and then I have to watch leela because she tries to finish first so she can try to steal the other's food... god she's naughty... She is settling in well, she had a bit of a tiff with leela and didn't want to know her for a day and a half, but now they are playing again.... IN THE HOUSE now that Leela has affirmed her status as top dog... she has let Tess know that all the toys, beds, pats & whatever else is doggy currency is all hers, hers, HERS! (BITCH!!!) Tessy pie is a sooky-la-la and really cries when I leave... she keeps waiting at the door for Pheebs but she is happy and quite attached to me, and has finally stopped trying to get on the couch! OH keeps making comments about the house being taken over by dogs and that they make it messy:rolleyes: I told him they are not as messy as him! I should get the dig camera and post some pics of them all... The shop on western hwy is in Minchinbury just up from the Bunnings (coming from Penrith) edited to say oh and tess has no lead manners!!!!!!! She is like a steam train.. any suggestions Pheebs? How the hell did you walk her, or is she just being naughty to me? LOL
  8. As long as the pet shop don't sell puppies & kittens I'll buy there unless of course they are rescue dogs... I just went to that little market type shop on westren hwy... normal sized butcher there and I got lamb shanks $1.50 each, lamb offcuts same price per kilo, chicken wings were 2.50 a kilo and they also had mince (human grade) if you buy 3 kilos it works out to around 5 bucks a kg. Which is ok coz the mince looked good. So they had a few things which is good to know if I run out of stuff as they are just up the road ;) there's also 'the big chicken' down the road from me were they sell cheap chicken products... although they keep battery hens I'm pretty sure and don't like supporting that trade. Why must I be so ethical it's a pain in the arse :D Let me know where pet barn is and what they have wont you dremen?!
  9. where's that!!!! :D haha, us Victorians have no idea I'm kinda near Penrith about 20 mins drive opposite direction of blue mountains. If I only had a small dog to feed I'd just buy the barf (I found a distributer on this forum) but I can't buy it all the time as I am feeding three large dogs at the moment!!! One dobe, a dobe x rotti and a weim!!! Crikey can they eat... and we only have a small freezer!!!! I thiiiink I know where the hills district is ok I just looked up on whereis.com and it's about 50 mins drive from me. The pre packaged barf diet would be great for you only having a small dog, and you mix and match with other meaty bones and stuff so you stretch it out... ever tried it? I don't really like the look of "pet mince" ESPECIALLY the chicken, because I mix the meat up with vegies & stuff and when it comes out of the bowl there is a thick layer of fat left in there. I'm assuming the mince is just made from skin/ offal/ bones and a very small amount of actual meat. There is a little fruit market up the road from me on the great western hwy, and it has a sign out the front saying they now have a butcher, may be worth checking out, might go see what they have to offer today. I think I need to invest in a chest freezer!
  10. I've never been to the carabean market before... seriously I miss my Preston market!!! Sometimes I used to walk down there with an 'old lady trolley' and meet my friend and I introduced her to BARF and showed her all the stuff to buy. We'd buy our meat & fish then our vegies then go to the deli section together, and sometimes we'd bump into friends we knew. I miss it!! Where's the hills district? Does Parklea have meat? I am near St Clair. A shop opened in St Marys with fresh dog meat but closed down soon after. I must say though it wasn't that good. I might go for a trip to the all pets pantry soon and check it out.
  11. I know certain foods are not good for dogs, but then there's the foods that are poisonous to dogs, I mean we all occassionally eat foods that are not 'good' for us- no harm in giving an occassional treat I say. Butterflybob- I was just explaining to my dog yesterday that he couldn't have avacado anymore coz it's bad for him- hopefully he understood I hear a little bit of garlic is good for dogs, but have also heard that it's bad. Very funny blacklab, you'll have to take up the drinking and smoking cigars for them I have heard that yolks are fine, but whites not so good for pups, but I feed a whole egg about once a week. In the pre-prepared barf diet there is fruit and I'm pretty sure there is apple. I give mine fruit occassionally (like the watermelon skin and they like to chew it up) but I never feed grapes or raisins. I've also heard tomatoes are bad, but if I have left overs with tomatoes in it I don't worry as it's not like they eat them all the time. And it's usually only a little bit.
  12. hi all, I used to live in VIC where I could go down to Preston market and fulfil all my doggie meaty needs. There I could buy chicken necks for $1 a kilo, wings, lamb flaps, shanks (shanks were about $2 each) bones, fish (fish heads for $1 a bag- I still think they should be free!!!) offal of all kinds even heads, tongues, you name it, they had it....rabbits, even hares! So I'm wondering if there is a market where I can buy cheap meat from? I went to Paddy's market but I hated it... I don't think it was very good for meat...and the crowd my god! I think manners are left at the entrance... What does Parklea market sell?? My local butcher sells marrow bones by WEIGHT and charge me about $4 for one... this is the stuff they used to chuck before they realised they could make $$ from it. (They were $1 at Preston market..) Hopefully someone can fill me in, otherwise I'm gonna get in my car and drive around for a day and see what I can find.
  13. Well, I think I have put it down to the dry food. I am going to get off my butt and stop being so lazy feeding dry food. I'll keep an eye on their turds if it happens again I'll surprise my vet with a lovely present. mmmmmm I have been checking their poos and Leela has been eating some carpet, sticks, bugs and insects, rocks, and a few other foreign objects. She is a twit I swear! BTW I prefer NSW weather to the north pole... couldn't get a tan there
  14. eeek! I think it may be caused from when I give them some dry food. But they do eat alot of different things (they are mainly on a barf diet).. Yuck, I don't mind 'poo scooping' but the mucousy ones are really disgusting, can I just rock up to the vet with a mucousy poo? I'll keep an eye on them, and next time it happens I'll get it checked out (sounds like $$$$$)... And I'm not exactly sure if it's mainly one of them doing it or both... So many different responses. There is never any blood in there... Are you cold at the north pole InspectorRex?!
  15. As the title says, my question is about mucous on dog poo, which both of my dogs occassionally have. (It looks absolutely gross too ) I am wondering why it is there, what it's from and is this a cause for worry? Is it a sign of infection? Does anyone else get this (not you, your dog/s ) To explain exactly what it's like, it's like a mucousy coating surrounding the poo... I could take a photo if you like Sorry for the immaturity I'm displaying, I never got over toilet humour...!
  16. hi vizsla girl... Remember me? Leela woke up with hives on the same day... She has just been to the vet coz they are still there after two days. The vet said it could've been a bite, or an inhalation reaction... remmeber someone else came on line and said they'd seen 6 other dogs with reactions like that on that same day, so maybe it was some sort of plant/pollen that was out around then, or maybe an insect went on a rampage... Anyway she's had an injection & I've got tablets, I asked for extra incase it happens again. If you see your dog having trouble breathing, I'd rush to the vets (which I'm sure u would anyway )
  17. Here's my info... do we get to see the fact sheet when you are done? Would be interested. 1. what do you feed? Lambs necks, flaps, hearts and sometimes liver, but when I serve liver I cook it ever so slightly on the outside otherwise one of my dogs wont eat it. Turkey legs, chicken carcasses. I also make a mince mix with either chicken or beef and vegies pulverised in a blender, sometimes I'll add an egg. To this mince mix I also add kelp powder and cod liver oil. Sometimes they'll also get some tined sardines or mackerel. One of my dogs will eat raw fish heads which are really cheap. I'll also give them bones. Veal bones are great because they get a good chew but they are also soft enough to eat. I don't feed the big marrow bones. Oh, and sometimes some supercoat because they love it and sometimes I get lazy 2. how often? Twice a day for my dog who is almost a year old, she'll go to once a day after she's one. The other gets fed once a day. 3. how much? Around about 500g. I just sorta guess. Less for the arvo meal. 4. what breed, age, sex and weight is your pet? Doberman, 11months, female about 30k Rottweiler x doberman, 3 years, male, 26k 5. where do you purchase your ingredients from? Pet shops (the mince, but only if it looks lean), supermarket, markets, farm outlets, I'm always on the lookout for suppliers. 6. have you always fed your dog this diet, or did you change over to it gradually? if yes, how did your dog react? I didn't notice any changes really. Although now I get so many comments about how healthy they look and how their coats are so shiny. I fed the little one raw from a pup. 7. what have been the advantages and disadvantages? Disadvantages are that sometimes you get blank looks when you try to explain to the butcher what you want. I feel that it's harder than the convenience of commercial food, and sometimes feel a bit alone in the decision making process of this kind of feeding because my vet doesn't really go for it. Would love to find a vet that supports how I feed my dogs. (I've moved now anyway so have to find a new vet). and as someone else said, my family thinks I'm mad too because of the effort involved! also it's much easier to pick up a dry hard poo at the park instead of a voluminous stinky moist one. Too much detail!!!??? And if you step in the poo in the backyard it usually just crumbles. 8. have you seen changes in your dog, ie. coat, energy levels? The older one seems to have more energy, and both of their coats are shiny. I have had skin problems with the doberman since she was a couple of months old, but I don't know if it's diet related so I guess that irrelevant. Hope that helps!
