Hi, my email was referred to Tracey. They have sent an action plan which I will try once the antibiotics stop and see how she responds to it. Fingers crossed we get some results.

Hi, as above said but also depends what else you are feeding too. I give one and some kibble to my Shepherd. That's it for the day, and she doesn't get any treats or scraps due to stomach issues. So being a smaller dog, if you are feeding just chicken frames and nothing else she might need something else as well as half a frame. Best to monitor her weight and also if she seems really hungry compared to usual. I tend to monitor weight more then anything.

That's alright, you have to tell so much of the story to show what you mean or what the experience is and I'm all for that. It's frustrating to find what the real issue is and what works. You get that way you don't dare stray to far from what seems to work in fear of upsetting things again. I have read about coconut oil but had trouble buying it or really getting some good info regarding dogs and success with it. Yeah I found info that should feed meds with a 2hr gap from slippery elm. Trying to work out which way I will do it or if I will hang off till she's finished most of her meds when she goes down one tablet a day, then I can do one at either end of the day instead. I noticed on the herbal site he suggests once a day feeding as well, Koda seems to do better on 2 small feeds at the moment. So annoying being in remote WA at the moment with such a problem. 18months to go and we will be back somewhere where we can get products etc to assist Koda. I like to see products if possible first not just a photo online.

okay. haven't heard or seen that version of it.

Yep, I'd found it too and sent a message. He also has the amount and time frame for slippery Elm on his site too. Would love to know what is the real cause though. She was fine when little. It started at about 7-9months but at the time it coincided with a food change and we initially thought it was that. then from that point we were struggling to find a food that worked for her.
-
Thanks for the name, I will look him up. We are in remote WA at the moment and our vet options are very limited. 2nd opinions are always good.

Valid point. But we have re-evaluated her diet and can't do much more with it. She only has the kibble we find that works (gluten free), chicken and turkey and roo which she seems fine with. She does not get any treat food, scraps, left overs, the kids don't feed her anthing and no food is left so she can get to it. The vets are at a loss with her at the moment. She's been on restricted diet since the first occurence a year ago. She was suspected of being an EPI dog but they ruled that out. Seems to be IBS related.

Hi, I have a GSD that has regularly presented with colitis symptoms and ends up on drugs each time. We usually get no warning and she has bleed each time as well. She is currently recovering from the last episode (Monday last week) and is still medicated. I have read some people have found slippery elm useful with stomach issues. I have two questions: 1. Can I add this to her food while still on the drugs....eg. does it affect drug absorption etc 2. Do you stir it into water first and let it turn into the jelly stuff and how much do you use. Any help would be appreciated. So which we could get her stable.

Here's a pic. Yesterday I washed it with aloveen shampoo to help calm the skin down if it is eczema type thing. The cream we put on it is ilium neocort to try to calm it down. Until yesterday is was just bare. She seems to be scratching it now. We use Sentinel on our dog. Can we use advocate at the same time. Advocate doesn't seem to cover tapeworm. So does this look like a mite problem that a product like advocate would resolve?
-
Yeah, I have a couple of creams I'm using at home to see if it is but in a couple of days if not improved will head to the vet as well....prices here are ridiculous is all so if I can fix her up at home would be preferrable. Fingers crossed.

Hi, our GSD has presented with a skin issue this week. A little bit under her eye the fur thinned out. Initially no redness.. More fur is missing and it it irritated now. Any suggestions on how to treat. We are in a small town and have limited vet options. Just don't want it to get out of control. Will go to vet if needed. Other thing to mention, we have moved from sydney to Karratha wa....very very hot here.

Dog Behaviourists That Are Ok With Prong Collars
best4koda replied to heroeswit's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I understand why your asking. What I hear is that you have done some of your own research due to the probs you are having, heard prong collars may assist with your problem and you are wanting to seek advice so to look for one that is open to prong collars is what I would do. I have one for my GSD. Never had to use one with the other 2 we have had. Check chains and halties did the trick but our little miss has no respect for them. I had a friend who trains dogs and was open to it and we went thru all the collars and slowly got to the prong collar. Some of it is my own technique with this one. Sorry I can't help you locate someone in your area. Just wanted to add my support that you are trying to work your way through the problem and find a behaviourist that can help you work thru the problem whether that is a prong collar or the other collars available and some technique... All the best in finding one. -
They should come and see what it does to my dog and all the others we know. After being forced to look at ingredients we don't use proplan any more. Hoping to get a better one for Koda soon. She does well on Supercoat sensative after we tried some expensive brands. Explosive poo. Once she's been stable along time we will try something else now I think I might know what the prob is. She also gets raw as well though. At the moment it's what works so we will go slow with it.

Very interesting. Have enquired to see if they have sample packs. Very interested for my troublesome GSD

Coles usually stocks more of the supercoat varieties. I use supercoat sensative for my GSD which woollies does not stock and always get it at coles except when the shelf is empty. Petbarn usually stocks them all if you have a big one nearby. The SP Supercoat is the only one we have found our GSD tummy is stable on so far. Most likely because it's gluten free and fairly low in fat. We will try one of the newer/dearer ones that have appeared that is gluten free in a while. We also feed fresh chicken/turkey/roo and fish. We are trialling protexin and thrive D to help the gut recover from the bouts of the runs. Yes, our dog from childhood was the same no vets till old, table scraps and the odd bone (cooked ) and was thriving compared to the dogs now. Possibly they used to do well as the food was fresh and fairly simple without additives as it was what we were eating.

Hi, we have moved from nsw to wa and somehow in the move we have misplaced the spoon that comes with thrive D. Does anyone know what the spoon that comes with it equates to by solid measure. e.g teaspoon. The instructions just say 6gms which is too small for me to weigh accurately. Have emailed company but they are shut till the 9/1/12. If anyone could let me know would be great.

High Calorie, Highly Palatable Foods For Sick Dogs
best4koda replied to Aidan3's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to hear your pup is ill. It is so hard as we love them greatly without realising it. Not sure what everyone has said but when our first was sick with cancer and he couldn't eat much we were told to feed him cat food as it was like dogg-lova being high in calories. Not sure if this is a good thing for yours or not but that is what our vet used to help in keeping the weight on. -
Has anyone else got any other experience with thrive D.
-
Nope there isn't and it's one of the reasons we've opted to stock it. Many others that advertise on the front of their bags as " turkey and rice " " lamb and rice " etc still contain chicken. There's also a few manufacturers that are changing formulas, I feel for those who are using a product and we're getting good results that now have to look for something else. Awesome. Obviously Pro Plan sensitive now has chicken meal in it, the rep has said that it "shouldn't" upset my girl's belly because there's not enough chicken in it but shouldn't isn't really good enough when you have a dog that is in pain from her upset belly and can't do what she wants to do. Thanks for that Ams, will try for a sample. Hi, for those that want to try. I did email Canidea au site and they were happy to mail samples out for me.

We have bought protexin but she has been having my inner health plus sprinkled onto her food as we are packing the house up and I didn't want to open that one until we move due to carting it from NSW to WA. But the vet was happy for me to give inner health each night.
-
Hi, I have just started Koda (GSD) on thrive D after another bout of the runs and antibiotics. I have noticed in the last 24hrs she's gone a little soft. Not going more just soft. Has anyone found this to happen and is it just a settling in period and then they come good again. Just wondering as we don't need another trip to the vet as we are moving interstate on Monday.
-
I will check out optimum but I think I didn't like the ingredients for my girl at the time when I've checked but it's always good to recheck from time to time. I have bought protexin and thrive D to try. Thrive D I will start tonight. Has anyone used it here? I feed twice a day so can anyone tell me if I just split the dose between the 2 meals instead? Protexin I will start after we move but after the antibiotics stop in a say she can have some inner health till we move.

I take slippery Elm bark myself as I get a lot of gas and acid reflux. I'm going to give it to my dog too. Is it best to give before food or can I mix it with his food? Yeah, won't stop the runs but hopefully will help make the gut more tolerable to upsets in the long run. I will be staying away from all food with gluten for her now. Not sure about slippery Elm but I was under the impression you just add to food. Someone on here should be able to let us know.

Trinabean, lol...sorry didn't realise that's what you meant by rigmarole...LMAO now....I seriously missed it....but it's given me a laugh now. Yeah, I think that is what i have done wrong this time adding things that I shouldn't to the diet...not bad things but enough to unsettle her gut. Mason, we are moving to Karratha in WA so vets will be very limited indeed. A long way from Perth. Just done a quick check of all the dog foods we have tried and they all have some form of gluten. Either directly wheat or corn gluten, or milder forms such as oats or barley.
