3 of my dogs are already getting the bare minimum now as it is, Shelley looks like she is going to eat the bowls aswell thats how hungry she feels. The only dog I'm not having any trouble maintaining the weight is my whippet Missy. 560grams of food is 2% of what Shelley should weigh, 740grams for buddy is 2% aswell,missy 265grams is 2.5% and Rascal is 60grams 2% of what he should weigh 3kgs at the most. Like I said variety in this town is going to be difficult.

Hi everyone I've been feeding the paws fresh lean pet mince to my dogs for almost 2 weeks and I don't like it, When the dogs poo it comes out the same it went in. Also don't know if it can happen but it is making Missy act dumb and more destructive. Also I did a bit of calculating could be more or less its says I should feed Shelley who should be 28kgs 560 grams a day, Buddy 740 grams a day,Missy 265 grams a day,Rascal 60 grams a day. If I buy 5kgs of beef,5kgs of ox heart,5kgs of ox liver,5kgs of lamb kidney,5kgs of lamb heart right there I'm looking at $95 and will only last 2 weeks,then $60 on raw meaty bones so all up $155. Now with the dr bs aussie barf patties 12x250gram patties both goldens and whippet will only get 1 pattie plus a raw meaty bone a day, 1/4 pattie plus a chicken neck or half a wing a day.So 1 12x250gram box will last Rascal 48 feeds, 1 box will last 2 days for 2 goldens and a whippet. Each box costs $24 so I would need 5 boxes to last a fortnight so thats $120 then bones on top of that $60 thats $180 for 2 weeks worth of food.

I can sometimes get a gutted rabbit for $8 each. I have plenty of fresh eggs as we own chooks, I do feed tin macheral,sardines and salmon once or twice a week. I do give my dogs turkey wings,chicken wings,chicken frames to 3 dogs, I cut a chicken wing in half for my chihuahua or he gets a chicken neck. Here I can get roo mince but Buddy my 13 year old golden doesn't like roo. I can get pork mince and turkey mince at around $5 for 500grams. I can get chicken pet mince 24 kgs for $20 but it looks quite fatty. I was planing on buying raw food on the 16th of this month so I need to make up my mind make my own or buy already made. The thing I am not sure of is do I need to add any supplements.

I was thinking of buying the dr Bs aussie barf patties as I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the ratios properly in making my own. Also in this town the only cheap meat I can buy is beef,lamb,ox heart,liver,kidney and ox cheek. For pork,chicken,turkey I'll have to pay $15 a kg. I'll be feeding 1 13 year old male golden retriever,1 3 year old female golden retriever,1 7 month old female whippet and 1 6 year old male chihuahua. 3 of my dogs have weight problems even when feed the tinyest amount of food or how much exercise I give them. Vets said there thyriods are normal.

HI I'm in 2 minds at the moment I want try my dogs on a raw diet but then I come across websites saying raw feeding isn't a balanced diet. It says raw diets are 70% water so not much nutrience or you have to feed alot of it. Reading the pro and cons on raw feeding is making me want to stick with what I am feeding now. Right now I'm feeding black hawk and paws fresh lean mince http://pawsfresh.com.au/pet-food/pouches-dogs.asp Those that do feed a raw diet have you had any problems? how are your dogs eg coat wise etc?Also would a raw diet help my dogs weight wise? Is it normal for my dogs to scratch 3-4 times a day? I could be taking them for a walk and they will come to a dead stop to scratch. Any information would be great.

I find labs shed more then goldens, I've also been told goldens mature earlier then labs. Both my golden retrievers were fairly easy to train even without the need for food. I got my male when he was 8 weeks old within a week he new sit and was working on drop. Shelley I got at 14 weeks old she took to training easy learnt sit within a week too,drop within couple of days. My whippet Missy on the other hand is stubborn and sometimes won't listen. Golden retrievers do require a brush at least once a week. The labs coat is lower maintaince.

Rascal my chihuahua is on hills science prescription w/d and still he isn't lossing much weight, His been on this food for a month and half hos weight was 4.9kgs now it is 4.3kgs. My guys absolutely love raw food, I also can't believe how much my dogs are pooing I keep saying there got 12 bottoms lol. 4.9 to 4.3 is quite a good weight loss.... but is he getting anything at all extra to the dry food (by you or other family members) usually that is the cause of slow weight loss on the w/d. Raw is more expensive and time consuming and you need to do a bit of research to ensure you are providing them with all their needs. IMO mincing the meat is not going to be the best form as there is no work involved for the animal to eat it, I would mince your veggies but provide the meat on the bone or in chunks. For me since I don't have the time and only 1 dog to feed I do buy the BARF patties for an occasional meal but mainly choose to feed raw meaty bones + dry food, egg or sardines and I find this more cost effective for me as well and since I have little freezer space I can't really store large amounts of home made food. If you have a good butcher, some time + space then over the long term raw would be cheaper. Nope nothing extra unless you call eating his poo extra lol

I haven't checked out supermarkets yet but I'm guessing they will be more expensive. The only meat there that is lean not much fat is the beef. But then I can't cut out all fat from there diet. They say to feed variety well in this town that will be difficult. I do feed them turkey wings/necks, chicken frames,wings and necks for rascal. In this town its hard to get pork unless you want to pay $15 or more per kg. I understand I only need to feed 80% musscle meat 10% bone 10% organ but it has to be a variety. I have seen chicken hearts,liver and kidney in supermarkets. But pork and turkey forget it can only buy diced or minced.

Hi everyone with 4 dogs 1 13 year old male golden retriever,1 3 year old female golden retriever,1 7 month old female whippet and 1 6 year old male chihuahu. I'm thinking of trying raw feeding, I have tryed raw with Shelley and she did pretty well on it, she did put on weight tho mainly cause I think I was feeding her too much, She was getting 560grams a day. My question is would it be cheaper to buy the ingredients and make raw myself or would it be cheaper to buy it already made dr Bs aussie raw barf patties? Also would I need any supplements eg kelp,flax seed oil? With 4 dogs I would need 5 boxs of dr Bs aussie raw patties every fornight, For 5 boxes I'm looking at $120 per fortnight. Then theres RMBS on top of that for the fortnight. What I was thinking of doing is buying a meat grinder to grind up my own musscle meat,bone and organs. I'm planing on ringing butchers etc and see how much they would want for off cuts of meat anything else I should ask about? The way I am thinking is buy time I go through buying the grinder,all the different meats and organs etc it will probably cost about the same as dr Bs aussie raw.

I'm hopeless at maths which is why I am on the pension I re calculated and found I made a huge mistake, to feed 2 golden retrievers and 1 whippet I will need 8 boxes each box contains 12x227 gram patties. 1 box will last 2 days thats feeding my male golden 3 patties my female 2 patties and my whippet 1 pattie for the whole day, So thats 6 patties for 1 day. Each box costs $24 so thats $192 for 8 boxes, so for just a fornight's worth of food $384. This seems fairly expensive to me so I might feed barf plus black hawk kibble or just stick with what I am feeding now.

Hi everyone Pebbles has given me details of a barf pattie suplier here in Mildura and just wandering everyones opinions. I have did some calculations what I am feeding now black hawk kibble and raw meat/bones 2 months worth of food I'm spending $320. Now with the barf patties and bones it will be $308 for 2 months worth. What one do you think would be better off? also do I need too feed raw meaty bones everyday or would twice a week be better. The barf patties are doctor B'S aussie raw.

If I was you I would go to a registered breeder even tho you will be paying $1000-$1200 for a puppy but the long run you will be buying a well socialized adjusted puppy which has been given the best care since birth. Also ask yourself do you have around $10,000 for a hip replacement if your lab has hip dysplasia down the track, With a registered breeder if your puppy did end up having hip dysplasia the breeder will either help with treatment and possibily a full refund or they will offer you another puppy from another litter.But in saying that 2 of my dogs didn't come from registered breeders, My chihuahua came from a pet shop and my whippet came from a backyard breeder. My chihuahua Rascal has weight problems and has to be on special food to help with his weight he is prone to putting on weight, No matter how much exercise or less food I give him he just packs on the weight. He also had to have his anal glands removed as he had problems even tho I feed him plenty of bones, He also had a bowel infection. This can happen to any dog tho no matter where it came from. Missy my whippet I got from a backyard breeder I don't regret getting her as she is turning out to be a great dog, But in saying that whippets don't really have health problems like labradors do. Will I buy from a pet shop or backyard breeder again No I will not I'll stick with registered breeders from now on.

Love him his real cute. I love the look of pugs just don't like piggy noises lol but in saying that Rascal my chihuahua makes piggy noises lol.

I don't have children and I don't plan on having any my pets are my children, But in saying that I do have a niece who can be a little to rough with animals so I watch her. I do not allow my niece to try and train any of my dogs as she can cause them to go backwards in training. She still trys to train them which I tell her no as she does it all wrong. My niece is 10 years old and has adhd and finds it very hard to listen to people. In saying that I got Buddy my 13 year old male golden retriever when I was 14 years old altho my parents paid for his food,vet treatment etc. It was up to me to groom him,train him,feed him and exercise him, Everyday before school I would play with him and feed him, then when I got home from school I spent all my time with him. I would play with him,take him for a walk,train him, If my friends wanted to play with me they knew they had to include Buddy in the games too. In saying that I spent more time with Buddy then I did with any of my friends, Buddy was and still is my best friend I sit beside him and talk to him and when I was upset I would always talk to him and cuddle him. Buddy gave more comfort,love and friendship then my human friends would. But I always grew up with animals even when I was born my parents had pets, I grew up loving animals and still do my pets are my life. I guess it really depends on the child and how they were brought up, I couldn't deny a child to grow up without having a pet around. But in saying that I wouldn't expect a child to take full responability of a pet the parents should always have the responability the animal is looked after etc and let the child have fun but also help with the pet eg feeding,exercise,cleaning,grooming.

I own 4 dogs 2 golden retrievers 1 13 year old male named Buddy and 1 3 year old female named Shelley, I also have 1 7 month old female whippet named Missy and 1 6 year old male chihuahua named Rascal. All my dogs prefer me and we have a strong bond, they spend the day outside then inside at night. The goldens get put outside to sleep when we go to bed. My dad and I can be outside with the dogs, My dad would throw a toy for missy to fetch and she will always bring the toy to me. My dogs love eacthother and do play with one another all the time but if i were to pay anyone of them attention they all want in on it.

Why? Unless you have an obese dog or a dog with pancreatic issues they need fat in their diet. I am aware of that - I thought the OP did have an obese dog? Yes Shelley my female golden retriever has gone from 33kgs back to 40kgs due to the pet mince, I think I'll go back to feeding human grade mince. If I feed my dogs anyless then what there getting they will be eatting everything in sight, The vet also said not to drop there food intake anymore as if I did they won't be getting enough nutrience. As it is Shelley is only getting 1 cup of food a day.

I would but my mum believes too much bones isn't good for them. My guys get feed in the morning then again at night. In the morning I like to give them a raw meal then at night I give them premium kibble.

LOL I know that I just want people opinions on if it looks good to feed to the dogs. Like does it look to fatty? would you feed it or choose a healthier mince?

Hi everyone I went to another butcher today and got 2 bags of there pet mince to try, I'm not sure it looks good but it looks to be fatty. 1 bag is chicken mince at $2 a kg and the other bag is cow cheek also known as ox cheek at $3:50 a kg. I also took a picture of the $2 a kg chicken mince next to a $1 a kg chicken mince from a different butcher. Please let me know what you think. If not I plan on going back to feeding human grade mince. The ox cheek mince Chicken mince other mince from a different butcher the $1 a kg bag The $2 a kg bag and the $1 a kg bag Out of the $2 a kg bag and the $1 a kg bag which one looks better? I know pictures can be difficult. The $1 a kg bag is a brownish colour where the $2 bag is fairly pink in colour.

I've always let my dogs offlead as soon as there allowed to leave the yard, I did work on recall at home a fair bit. Even tho I let my guys offlead so young they never wounded off far. If I saw someone or another dog I would put them back onleadvwaited till they have gone beofre letting them back off. I tryed the long line with Shelley when she was a puppy it didn't work to well she kept getting tangled and with Shelley it made her worse she wouldn't listen when on a long line.

I wouldn't mind trying a couple of samples of this food but don;t like the idea of putting my credit card details online. Does anyone know how I can get some samples of this food without needing to use a credit card?

Missy my 6 month 3 week old female whippet just peed on our carpet and she hasn't done that in the last month, I thought she was house broken but after tonight nope still have to keep on eye on her. I don't think Missy will ever be house broken she knows to go outside to do her business but yet will come inside and do one. I make a big fuss with her when she does it outside and still doe2sn't make a difference.
