Hi Missy my 8 month old whippet has been doing fowl smelling farts for the past month, There clear the room farts. I am not sure what is causing it. She gets feed raw mince meat be it chicken or chicken and roo, I just brought some pet cooked meat from bucket o beef to try. I'm not sure if its the raw food or the black hawk kibble. This is why I brought bucket o beef cooked pet meat to feed this with a small amount of kibble to see if it stops the farting. She has had the bucket o beef pet meat for 4 days now and still her farts are rotten. Missy has always had raw meat since the day I got her, she has been feed black hawk for about a month and half to 2 months, before then she was feed optimum puppy.

No she is never left with the cats unsupervised. Thats the problem we have a cat here that even hisses at Missy when she walks past. The hissing and pawing just edges Missy on more. OSoSwift how dare you say I'm a rubish owner, How about you come here and meet my dogs and you will see how well taken care of and how well behaved they are. They get everything they need they come before me, I'll do anything for them. Is it so wrong to try and fix a problem first without runing to a behavourist straight away?

I guess I kept saying shes a puppy she will learn over time, I didn't think it could be my training, The trainers at obedience said to use 1 or 2 words when there doing wrong either a No or a Arh No. I use both Arh and No but not together. Looks like back to basics with Missy then well for the cats it is.

Ok I'll try that note to sself carry treats around. Hopefully it won't take to much to train her out of it.

early mornings is usually just lovely ;) Why not, when it's hot .. do some education stuff? she can practice lying still , going to a mat EVERY time she's told .. leaving food when you say no ... and my favourite , just me and a dog in a nice quiet room, doing whisper training :D I love training dogs using just a whispery voice ... we both need to concentrate , and the dog learns to really watch/listen to get the opportunity for lots of gentle ,quiet physical praise . Me? I enjoy watching the dog closely , and praising on the signs of dog listening to me ..and understanding what is wanted .It's a very tranquil thing to do .. no sudden moves, no noise, just communication ..and learning. I train her everyday only for short lessons as she gets bored easy. Normally within 10 minutes Missy has had enough and starts to shut down. Might be a dumb question but what is whisper training? Missy knows to sit and wait when she is being feed. She does know to go lay down when told just sometimes she chooses not to listen which is when I pick her up put her on the couch and say lay down.

Ok monet I didn't think of it that way. I thought once the cat let off that sorten ouch meow and a little swipe of the paw and me telling her no Missy would learn that enough is enough. Looks like I'll be walking around with a spray bottle filled with water and spray her everytime she goes for the cat, Do I even spray her when she looks at 1?

Yes I did get your PM

Missy never saw cats till she came to live with my family she was 12 weeks old when we got her, Pax I don't chase her when she has done something wrong, I also never call her to punish either. I do play chasy games with her throughout the day. I love and adore Missy and I wouldn't want to give her up. Missy even pounces on the cats if there just laying there, But at times the cats do play with her, Missy could be walking past one and he will start to play with her. The cats don't mind playing with Missy its just when Missy gets to rough they have had enough they get up and walk away with Missy still following them. I don't mind her playing with the cats I just want her to learn that when I say enough it means enough. Monet n divas mum I may try the spray bottle and see if that works. In everyother way Missy is a great dog and I really love her, She follows me around alot even sits in my lap. Missy is more of a lap dog then Rascal my chihuahua. Missy is laying beside me right now asleep, The last few days I haven't been able to exercise her due to the weather being so hot.

Raise my voice I mean eg screaming at her even when I talk i'm loud so my raising my voice is screaming. I always thought yelling and screaming at a whippet was a no no as it can make them timid. If you heard my normal talking you would understand my voice is quite loud.

What do your obedience trainers say about Missy harassing the cats? Have they given you any tips? Perhaps ask them for advice as they actually know her? Or even better get a behaviourist to come to your home and observe the behaviour. Have you thought about taking Missy rabbiting or lure coursing or some other activity to get some drive satisfaction? I have thought about taking her rabbiting but not sure how or where to start? Also I'm worried about injuries as Missy can be a bit clumbsy. Her obedience trainer just says to say No in a firm voice.
-
Got a baby gate and the cats can go in there to get away from Missy but they don't. She plays with the other dogs Shelley chases her around the yard all the time, Buddy wrestles with her, Rascal barks while chasing her. I my boyfriend and my dad chase her around the house too at times. She has plenty of toys which she plays with, hard to keep her occupied with when theres a cat around. If I really raise my voice at her she will listen but I don't like doing that.

I didn't say I couldn't train her just after some ideas to get her to leave the cats alone so I have one problem with Missy and you say rehome her, yet someone comes on and asks for help with there dog aggerssive dog and you all help how about saying PTS instand. Mind you my parents whippets were taken out rabbiting everyday so its a bit different as Missy isn't used for rabbiting. Missy is a great dog even the obedience trainers said her training is coming along nicely, Missy knows heel, sit, sit/stay,come still working on drop but the trainers say not bad for a 7 month old sighthound. She is just stubborn when it comes to the cats, I don't like using shock collars, citronella, But if I have to I will. Is that the normal pratice in this forum have 1 problem better off to rehome the dog instand of working through it.
-
My parents had whippets over 30 years old so the breed has probably changed since then. My dad said his whippets were never as stubborn as Missy is, They never really barked much. My missy is a talker, Voices her opinion, If you tell her No she barks at you. I do play fetch with her but she will only play for so long before getting bored. what do I do to up the Ante No doesn't work, putting her outside doesn't work, food doesn't work, toys don't work, The only things I can think of is a small tap on the bottom, putting something horrible on the cats to make them smell and taste horrible, but cats lick themselfs so I don't think theat would work. Or spray Missy with something everytime she annoys the cat.

Here we go again..... You've had this pup for 3.5 months. You were counselled against getting her and when you did, you were advised to stop her annoying the cats IMMEDIATELY. So now we're here. You have two choices: * step up and discipline her sternly for doing this. If she's got a collar on, EVERY time she goes to molest a cat, grab her by the collar. Roar "NOOOOO" at her and put her outside. * rehome her now. Given that you've never shown the slightest indication that you're capable of following any of the advice given to you here, I suggest this is the better option for this pup before she actually injures one of the cats. You have no idea how infuriated I am that your failure to think this through and to train your pup is now placing her future at risk. And you wonder why I told you NOT to get a Whippet. This is deja vu I could seriously have lived without. (and for those who have no idea what I'm talking about, a read of the relevant posts in the Whippet thread will be illuminating) I wish you luck getting her breeder to take her back. But then you didn't follow any advice about sourcing her from a responsible breeder either. Maybe your sister will bail her out. For Missy's sake, I hope so. I have told her No and even put her outside when she has annoyed the cats it doesn't help. As soon as you let her back in shes at it again so I tell her No again and then leave her outside till bedtime. What am I meant to do hit her she is very stubborn, I have told her No since the day I got her with the cats. She goes to obedience every monday night the trainers just keep telling me to say No in a firm voice and she will soon learn. I know Missy just wants to play but she won't learn the meaning enough is enough. The cat even starts hissing but still she won't give up this is when I normally step in. She gets that stubborn that she won't even listen when theres food around.

Hi everyone Missy my 7 1/2 month old female whippet won't leave our cats alone she keeps biting down on there heads and necks even if the cats have a go at her she still trys to do it. My parents are getting fend up and I'm getting annoyed as they said if she doesn't stop she will be staying outside 24/7. I keep telling her No Leave but within a second she is doing it again. The cats can't get away from her cause where ever they jump to Missy can reach. What can I do? if it comes to it I might have to rehome her which I do not want to do.

Another What Breed Thread - For Multi Animal Household
mumtoshelley replied to casowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
You will be happy with a whippet they are great dogs. My whippet Missy follows me everywhere she is my velcro dog. She is fairly easy to train. I quite enjoy watching Missy run and she is very easy to exercise and to maintain her weight. Missy is easy to groom, she doesn't smell unless shes rolled in something that does lol. Now to the bad points whippets love counter surfing well my Missy does and she also loves to get into the garbage bin. -
Whoo Hoo I Am Getting Whole Rabbits
mumtoshelley replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well rabbit did go down to well with my dogs SHelley ate some then walked away,Buddy had a little bit then walked away, Missy had some licks then left, Rascal didn't even touch it. So I have 1 and half rabbits out of 2 rabbits left which my sister is going to see if her dogs will eat. Missy my whippet was hoping for chicken or turkey lol. -
Op is at fault he should have went and grabed his dog and put it on lead if it didn't come when called. Shelley my GR,Missy my whippet and Rascal my chi are mostly off lead on our walks. There only on lead till we get to the oval. But in saying that if I see another dog or human I call them to me Shelley and Rascal I can leave off lead and just say ignore and they do, Missy on the other hand I hold onto her till the person or dog has gone. Missy is getting better now she is only 7 months 1 week old and is learning the command ignore, But I still keep a hold of her when there are people or dogs around. Sometimes tho Missy spots another dog before I do but I know by her body language that she has spoted something, I call her when she looks I start runing the other direction which normally gets her to chase me. There are times where Missy hasn't chased me and went to play with other dog or human, I say sorry to the people and put Missy onlead,They normally say its alright and ask how old she is and when I say 7 months they say oh only a baby. They understand she is still in training but I still feel horrible about it.

Whoo Hoo I Am Getting Whole Rabbits
mumtoshelley replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Private source he catches them for human food too. I can also get cleaned rabbits for $8 each at one butchers when they get them, another butcher wants $15 per rabbit cleaned. I thought it would be too much meat not enough bone and too much organ, I thought they needed some organ with each meal. This is getting confusing for me. So raw meaty bone with some other musscle meat do I put just a little organ or give a full meal of organ once a week. If anyone got some reciepes would be great. Also would fish oil or emu oil be better or both. I do plan on giving a raw whole egg, mackerel, sardines or salmon once or twice a week. I'm all new to this and am quite slow when it comes to learning which is why i'm on the pension so please be nice. I know I need to feed 80% musscle meat 10% bone 10% organ but just finding the reciepe to feed my dogs is a bit difficult. -

thats why I wanted to try them first to see if they like them. I'm still researching raw feeding, Should I give them a RMB everyday or every 2 or 3rd day? If I was going to feed 400grams does this sound alright for each day for the goldens 150grams of beef pieces 150grams of lamb,ox heart 100grams of organ for Missy my whippet at 3% 109grams of beef pieces 109grams of lamb,ox heart 100grams of organ For rascal 20grams of beef pieces 20grams of lamb,ox heart 20grams of organ If I feed a RMB eachday I'll only half that amount. Is this still too much organ for them? if so how much organ should I give them weekly in grams? I already buy turkey wings/necks,chicken wings, chicken frames and chicken necks. I can get ox cheek pieces and lamb flaps cut up too. -

You will have to weigh your dogs and the rabbits. Missy - 3-5% of her bodyweight PER DAY (not per meal) The Goldens 2-3% The Chi - no more than 2% You can still make and keep a dog fat on rabbit if you overfeed. Ok thanks I'll weigh the rabbits when I get them, 2% of what shelley should weigh it says I should feed her 560grams I was thinking 400grams is plenty for her, Buddy it says 740grams which I think is way too much and will probably feed the same amount as Shelley, Missy says 265 grams at 2.5%. Rascal 60grams at 2%. -
Hi everyone I'm getting some whole rabbits minus the guts and fur. I do have a question tho how much should I feed? Should both my golden retrievers get 1 rabbit each for the whole day or half a rabbit each? How much should I give to Missy my whippet and Rascal my chihuahua? My dogs haven't had rabbit before so I'm trying them out to see if my guys like it. If they do I may buy them more often or when I can get them. I'm getting 4 rabbits for $20.
