Whippet Won't Gain Weight
mumtoshelley replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree with you all my dogs are doing so much better on a half raw half black hawk diet there coats are nice and shiny and they look great. I will see if I can convince my sister to buy a better quality food for Misty. But till then I'll continue to feed her goodos and raw meat, I've got canned macarel so might start mixing that with her food. On monday I'll ring the vet and see if they will see her that day. I hate seeing Misty this thin it's heart breaking. -

I said she wasn't taken to the vets when my sister suspected gastro, she just stopped feeding for 24 hours then feed a blend diet. My sister took her to the vets a week or 2 later cause she wasn't gaining the weight back, the vets said just keep feeding her which she has. It is now been 2 months and Misty still hasn't gained back the weight. Sorry if I confussed you. -

so what you are all saying Instand of helping Misty I should let her go and suffer, If she is no better on monday I will ring the vet and see if I can get her in, The vets are closed here now and don't open till monday. The reason I posted is to help Misty not get talked down and made out to be the bad guy. I can't exactly force Misty to eat can I, I try feeding her throughout the day but most of time she will not eat or only have a bite full then walk away. -

If Misty never saw a vet, how was she diagnosed with Gastro??? Oh *forehead slap* -is this YOUR diagnosis. If the dog is eating goodos, SHE's EATING. Maybe she prefers goodos to what else is on offer - can't blame her really. Isn't this dog on a regular worming program? You don't just toss one down their throat when they look skinny. Seriously, your stories change every time you post. Get the dog checked out and stop feeding her crap. It's not rocket science. You've been receiving nutritional advice on this forum for over 12 months - surely you have some idea by now. If there wasn't a sick Whippet involved, I'd not be responding to you at all. Feeding canned food is feeding expensive water - chicken wings would be cheaper by the kilo than that. Most of what your sister is feeding is ending up in the poo shovel. You don't need to be a millionaire to feed a dog well. Why can't you share the costs of some Black Hawk?? Maybe you should simply let your mum feed her - she's had good success putting fat on your other dogs. I didn't tell my sister it was gastro she came up with that herself, I told her to take her to the vet and get her checked out but she wouldn't. I have been trying to get Misty to eat black hawk but she refuses to eat any kibble, She would eat raw meat and goodos easy enough, But this morning she didn't want to eat raw meat either ate a small handful of goodos tho. Oh the reason why my mum manages to get my dogs to gain weight is they will eat anything and everything put in front of them, There garbage guts lol. I've got my dogs all sorted out Rascal is lossing weight slowly he was 5kgs and is now 4.3kgs and still lossing. Shelley has also lost fair bit of weight pictures make her look bigger then what she really is. So my dogs are prefectly fine and are doing great with there diet. -

I know the diet my sister has Misty on isn't good and I'm afraid she can't afford premium food. My sister has given me premission to take Misty to the vet, they are closed now unless I ring emergency number. She seems better this morning but wouldn't eat her food, I've told my mum to stop feeding her goodos. I think Misty is suffering from speration anxiety, She sleeps inside with my parents on the bed under her own blanket. She can't sleep in my room as Misty and Missy will just play, plus theres no room on my bed lol between 2 humans 1 whippet and a chihuahua. I thought I was doing the right thing by worming her first. If Misty was my dog she wold have been at the vets already, Whippets don't have much fat so when they get sick it takes it out of them fast. My sister didn't take her to the vet when she had gastro she just stoped feeding her for 24 hours then feed her cooked chicken and rice for a few days then slowly induced her normal diet. -
Hi everyone I've got a bit of a problem here, it's my sisters whippet Misty she is a bag of bones I can count every rib and shee her hip bones. Misty has been like this for 2 months since she got gastro. My sister can't get Misty to gain any weight no matter how much she feeds her. My sister has been feeding her supercoat puppy biscuits and pal can food. My sister did worm her but she wormed her when she had gastro and she ended up throwing up after she gave her the worming tablet. I'm looking after for 4 days as my sister has gone out of town, I wormed her today, She doesn't look well even more so now since I wormed her. Since she has been here I have been feeding her ox cheek mince which she eats without a problem, She only seems to want to eat raw meat. Misty has no energy at all, normally she runs around with my Missy. My sister did take her to the vet they just said keep feeding her she will gain the weight on. Misty use to weigh more then Missy now Misty weighs 9.6kgs where Missy weighs 10.6kgs. The only thing I can think of is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Does any one have any ideas? I told my sister when she gets back to take her to the vet and get her checked out throughly.

What about whippets? I love whippets too there so easy to care for hardly no grooming required, easy to exercise, fairly easy to train. Missy my whippet is so sweet and loving she is now 10 months old and still pretty hyper but is managed with plenty of exercise and training

I don't think it realy matters which breed you get, people around here are wary of my female golden retriever and won't walk past her, they do a wide half circle. In saying that Shelley isn't the normal golden retriever, she is protective over me specially at night. No one can get near Shelley if I'm not with her, She was almost stolen from me a few days after I got her at 14 weeks old. If I'm with her she will happy let people pat and cuddle her, but if I'm not with her she will bark and growl at them. But the way this world is coming too I would profer my dogs to be like Shelley she loves people and is very friendly, she warns people but I believe she wouldn't do any harm. Now days to me its not worth having gaurd dogs cause they can be decleared dangerous or be put down.

my favourite breed- golden retrievers, labrador retrievers, ckc, tibetan spaniel, weims, gsp.shetland sheep dog, australian cattle dog. I'm realy loving the tibetan spaniel the most. Least- would have to be jack russells, fox terriers

Like everyone has said every dog is different even within the same breed. Like I said Shelley will happy sit down for pats and cuddles if I'm there with her, If I'm not there she will not accept people approaching her and shelley is a golden retriever. So I would like people to ask first to pat my dogs and I do the same I ask before I touch theres. Shelley is what I call a mommys girl and she looks at me for everything, Before she goes to people or other dogs she waits till I give the ok. My dad has even said he wouldn't trust shelley if he was a stranger to her as she can be quite protective over her yard and myself. So if you came up to my dog shelley without me there exept alot of barking and growling with hackles up, She is like this cause she was almost stolen from me few days after I got her at 14 weeks old.

I went to the red cliffs dog show and most of the dogs there were friendly and loved being patted. Altho I did see a whippet there that was very scared, anyone who walked past it made the dog jump out of fright. There were also italian greyhounds there that barked at everyone who walked past them too. But in saying that these dogs could of had a bad day or the show was too much for them. These dogs were registered breeders dogs, I even had a breeder say that show dogs are different from pet companian dogs. All I know is my golden retriever Shelley will be happy to sit there for pats and cuddles all day long, Missy my whippet will run up for pats and cuddles then run around some and come back for another pat, Rascal my chihuahua is very picky some people he walk up to them for pats some he will bark at. Shelley and Missy will play happy with any other dog they meet where Rascal chooses which dog he will say hello too, If if doesn't like that dog he comes to me and wants me to pick him up.

I went to a dog show here in red cliffs I enjoyed it altho some of the breeders didn't want to talk about there dogs or answer any questions, But I guess it could be that they were busy at the time. I did get to interact with some alaskan malamute puppies, a liver spoted dalmatian,a border collie,a irish wolfhound, shetland sheepdog,a flat coated retriever. I also got to cuddle a tibetan spaniel puppy he was so cute I feel in love straight away, The tibetan spaniel breeder was so friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. His tibetan spaniels were so friendly even the dad of the puppies lap up for pats. I did ask permission before touching the dogs, I can understand people not wanting there dogs touched specially the coated breeds where it takes forever to get ready for the show.

I also don't feed what it says on the bag, My 3 year old golden retriever Shelley gets 2 tablespoons of raw minced meat or a turkey wing in the morning. Then at night she gets 3/4 cup of black hawk. Buddy my 13 year old GR gets 2 tablespoons of raw minced meat or a turkey wing in the morning, at night he gets 1 1/4 cup of black hawk. Missy my 9 month old whippet gets 1 cup of raw minced meat or a turkey wing in the morning,at night she gets 3/4 cup of black hawk. Rascal my 6 year old chihuahua gets teaspoon and half of raw minced meat or a chicken neck in the morning, at night he gets 20grams of black hawk.

Struggling With Teach Come.

What I do is I call my dogs and start jogging away from them, I also say bye while I go. It works well for my dogs as they don't like to be left behind. They come runing when they see me jogging away from them specially missy my whippet she loves to chase things. Once I notice them coming I stop jogging and call them then reward once they come to me. Most dogs love to chase, the idea is to make yourself more fun then whatit is they were doing. If they don't come call then run in the other direction, You could also use a squeeky toy while doing this to make it more interesting. -
toy: cavalier king charles spaniel small: whippet medium:aussie shepard large: golden retriever giant:newfoundland

Here my dogs eat there own food then go check out everybody elses bowl to see if they left anything. Shelley will sit and lick each bowl for a few minutes, She acts like she hasn't been feed in days lol. Rascal my chihuahua fills up on dog poo which is gross.

Don't worry I still get people saying Shelley is a labrador when she is a golden retriever. This one is funny had a lady say Missy my whippet is a tentifield terrier lol. I also had a guy say is Rascal a chihuahua cross kelpie lol his a pure chihuahua. Zorro is absolutely gorgeous love the smile on his face. -
The only thing I can think of is beef meat. Her main raw meat and bones are chicken and turkey with some roo once in while. But now bucket o beef has chicken and roo mince together so they have been getting that for the past 4 days.
