When Is On Leash Not Effective Control?
mumtoshelley replied to Whippetsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't like those extendable leads as you don't have much control over the dog. All the dogs i have seen on those leads are very bossy and get into other dogs faces. I think they should be taken off the market really. I admit i was walking my mums golden retriever Buddy when i was 14 years old, But i had full control over him. -
Thanks i thought she looked unhappy too. When i first go to her she is really happy and goes to my left side straight away and sits, She only seems unhappy when it comes to heeling, I think its a combantion of me being boring and very serious and the corrections the obedience club says to do. I'm really going to work on making it fun for her, I think i just need to talk to her in a very happy way first off to get her excited then get to heel for a few secongs then reward her by pating her then playing again like in the second clip. Just hopefully it will make her focus more on me, I know she is listening to me eg cause she is doing what i ask i just want her to be happy about it.

Thats a great video I want Shelley walking nicely like your dally is. I guess i have my work cut out for me.

I know i seem boring i'm not offended at all, I guess i don't want to look like a idiot at training. Maybe i should be doing the reward like i did at the end of the second clip, She looked so happy and was willing to do more. The main reason why the obedience club don't want you to make eye contact is they said that the dog will most likely break the stay command. I was thinking of doing obedience trails with Shelley but i'm not sure if she has enough drive for it. She is very good with ignoring other dogs, people. Her recall is pretty good and so are her stays. Her drops can be a bit sloopy here and there eg lays on her side instand on the legs and belly. Her sits are pretty good actually she sits that close to me it feels like she is sitting on me lol.

I train with these guys http://mc2.vicnet.net.au/home/mvodc/web/MVODC.html there also listed on the dogs victoria website too.

I did give her a pat and told her good girl but didn't play with her at the end like in the second video. Maybe i'm giving her the wrong singals or something. Shes good at sitting beside me, Problem is the obedience club here doesn't like you giving eye contact to the dog, I don't know why. I guess i'm going to have to go back to basics with Shelley. I have notice just after couple of times with my hand under her chin was getting the idea of holding her head up. When she looks up at me i do reward her. I just brought some kangaroo treats off ebay.

mumtoshelley replied to lappiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope everyone is safe there. -
I did some training with Shelley today she was unresponsive to food no matter what food i used. She just kept sitting then wanting the food. So i tryed something else which seemed to work. I put my hand under her chinwhile walking saying heel, I didn't do it for long but did it throught the day. As a reward she responded well too the pats and play. Here is a video of What Shelley's heels are like http://pets.webshots.com/video/3008433770107041515gMjpAg don't mind the old golden retriever in the video thats my mums dog Buddy Here is another video of Shelley heeling this time with my hand under her chin http://pets.webshots.com/video/3011962150107041515UHvGWt

Shelley isn't much for fetching she will chase the toy and bring it back but after 2 throws shes had enough. She isn't much for toys was like that since the day i got her. She loves food and really keeps an eye on the food or the person who has the food. I guess i'll see how the food works out, If need be i'll useher half a cup of dinner for training during the day and then at night she will get 1 cup of food.
-
Shelleys walk is completely offlead she is hardly onlead at all. She doesn't walk beside me tho she runs up front a bit then stops and waits till i get to her, then she goes again. When we cross the road she stops waits till i come looks both ways then when i say ok we cross. When she is onlead she is walking beside me, She seems so much happier then at training. I think it might be the pulling back on the lead correction the trainer said to do.

Shelley isn't toy driven shes not much into toys as she is with food. I might give the treat a go and see how she does.

I just tell her good girl and pat her head, chest. All the other dogs at obedience all looked happy except for Shelley she looked sad.I'll only be using heel for obedience when on our walks she can walk like she does now. When on our walks her head is held high and she looks very happy. The last time Shelley was at obedience she was happy but now she seems sad. The trainers said if she moves out of heel pull the lead back and say heel. I know she gets excited when she sees food. But i'm not sure using treats as Shelley is on a diet as she needs to lose weight.
-
I don't want Shelley to walk that close to me where i she is glued to my leg but i would like it if she walked with her head high looking up at me.She is doing good will heel but i just want to make it better with her head held high not drooping down like shes very sad. So far i've trained Shelley without using food but i will use food if i have to to teach he to look up to me.

Hi how can i get my female golden retriever Shelley to heel properly. Tonight at obedience Shelley would walk with her head to the ground she always has when i tell her to heel. I've never really used the heel command with Shelley as she normally runs up front so far then stops and waits for me to catch up. It seems she has more confidence offlead then she does onlead. I want Shelley really heeling like this Shelley hasn't been too obedience for a year and tonight was her first night back and i would really like to work on the heeling more and stand. I've also got to teach her long distance command and touch. So we have our work cut out for us till next monday.

here is a picture of Shelley at 35kgs

people are just to use to seeing fat dogs and thinks that is normal,They should look that way. I admit of had some battles getting Shelley to lose weight if i give her more then 1 and half cups of food a day she gains weight. Tommorrow i'll take another picture of her since she has lost 5kgs. Heres a picture of Shelley at 40kgs.

I always thought that you should be able to feel the ribs but not see them thats what my vet said. I've seen alot of overweight labs here,There that bad that some of the dogs can hardly walk. My Shelley is a bit overweight but i'm working on that actually she has lost weight already, She was 40kgs now 35kgs so has lost 5kgs in 2 weeks.

Close Encounter With A Brown Snake
mumtoshelley replied to mumtoshelley's topic in General Dog Discussion
so far she is still active she can still walk and run. I'm keeping a close eye on her but so far she seems normal. -
Hi everyone today on our walk Shelley and I came accross a juvenile brown snake, Shelley was offlead she was right ontop of it. I yelled out Shelley leave and she backed away from it. I didn't even see it myself till it moved. I didn't see it strike it had its head to the ground the whole time. It just slithered away about a foot from my own feet. This happened about a hour ago, Shelley doesn't have any marks or blood and isn't showing any signs of been bitten. I'm just so glad she listened to me and back away from the snake. Should i be taking her to the vet anyway or is it safe to say that she will be fine.

I never gave my Shelley toys that looked like a bird but yet she loves to chase the ducks and any other flying bird. She is to slow to catch them. But i call her away from them which she listens pretty well. Actually at times the ducks seem like they want to play lol

Want A Dog, But Need Help Choosing A Breed.
mumtoshelley replied to jebee's topic in General Dog Discussion
Here are some questions for you 1,do you want a dog that sheds or doesn't shed? 2 do you want a overly friendly dog or a more independent dog? 3,what weight range do you want your dog to be? I own a female golden retriever she is a great dog loves people and children, She can be active but is happy with 30 minutes of offlead runing. They are very easy to train and can be trusted offlead. There very friendly, loyal, faithful, they do shed about twice a year. But i find its easily maintained by brushing every couple of days. They do love to be around there family, They will also like the idea of going bush walking. They also love water and will do anything to go for a swim. Golden retrievers will suit you too. -
thanks for the reply i'll be buying dog shampoo from now on. I don't mind spending money on a good product. Just want a product that will get rid of fleas, leaves my dog smelling nice for a while eg not just like 5 minutes. I love the smell of perppermint, lavender, orange, I want something that smells girly for Shelley.

When she comes to me she is noramlly lying of her bed she always seems to have to feel sorry look to her all the time. She begs anyone who walks in the yard for a pat and won't leave them until she has got a pat. I often call her to me and pat her, When i stop she trys to go to another person often that other person is my dad which he pats her but as soon as he stops she nudges his hand for more. My dad often tells her go to bed which she listens and goes. But as soon as someone else appears she straight to them begging for attention. Werid thing is she seems to ignore other people on our walks. Other people on our walks can call her and she won't go to them at all. Ok so I'll stop looking at her when we are going to go out.
