  1. I disagree with DA dogs needing a muzzle to protect the dogs of owners who break the law allowing their dogs to roam off leash. I have that said to me on a couple of occassions when one of mine has cranked up on an unleashed dog and asking them why their dog is off leash in relation to the laws, they have a go at me because mine cranked up suggesting I should muzzle him? Why should I muzzle him, we are on leash minding our own business then an off leash dog runs at us owned by people who can't control their dog off leash and breaking the law, and it's my dog's behaviour than needs addressing putting their dog at risk of getting bitten Not that I would allow my dog to bite another dog off leash or not, if they abided by the laws or could control their dog these incidents wouldn't happen. Mumtoshelley was in a legal off leash area. She was in an off leash area but off leash still means dogs need to be kept under effective control, meaning that you need to have voice control of your dog and be able to prevent it from approaching another dog or person. If a DA dog is secured on leash, even in an off leash area, it should not have to be muzzled because owners of off leash dogs in the area should be abiding by the law and not letting their dogs rush up to other dogs, which I think was PetSitter's point. I did have voice control over my dogs, Like I said iI was grabbing her leash at the time, If you know my Shelley she is quite fast. By time I got to yell out drop she was already a meter away from the dog.I have there leash looped around my neck so my hands are free.My dogs also know hand signals and commands. Sorry, I wasn't having a go at you. I should have been clear that I was just responding to the comment about DA dogs needing to be muzzled when out walking on leash and what I understood to be aussielover implying that if it is in a designated off leash area, then the onus is on the owner of the leashed DA dog and not on the owner of the friendly off leash dog. It wasn't directed at you personally or about the level of control you do or don't have over your dogs. I understand. I just wish some parents have common sense and not allow children to walk a aggerssive dog on there own. I often have my 9 year old niece asking if she can walk Shelley, But I don't allow her as Shelley can be quite strong when she wants to be.

  3. Maybe I should just keep my dogs onlead throughout there walk, I guess they won't be lossing much weight then. To wear them out onlead I better walk all day then, there already getting 40 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day most of it offlead. Maybe a meter was to close for comfort. I was in a legal offlead area, Shelley normally ignores all other dogs on our walks unless I say it is alright. I can only say Shelley reacted the way she did cause the dog was pulling like a stream train towards us, I was grabing her lead but before I had time to attach it she was off towards it so I yelled drop which she did straight away then called her. Had another incident today on our walk aswell another staffy or crossbred dog. This guy saw me coming, I didn't see the dog at first but I had both my guys walking in heel, another offlead area down by the river. Well the guy didn't even bother grabing his dog, His dog then went for Shelley who was minding her own buisness walking right beside me, I held her by her collar as we were walking past, Rascal was walking beside me. This dog went to grab Shelley by the neck so I let go of Shelley so at least she had a chance to defend herself or run away. Rascal my chi run back the other way to get away. Shelley run the obbisite direction. Cause the dog couldn't catch Shelley I went to pick up Rascal when the dog went for him had him pinned down to the ground, All while the owner was trying to get his dog. I managed to pick up Rascal then the dog went back for Shelley, which then stood up real tall and puff herself out to make herself look bigger then what she was. At this point I knew Shelley was getting angry thank god the owner managed to grabed his dog. Yes I had mine offlead but they were under complete control.
  4. Thats the thing this oval you are allowed to have dogs offlead, I was on one side of the oval, the kids were on the other and there dog dragged them htowards where I was with my dogs. Sheley noticed it coming before I had a chance to grab the lead SHelley run towards it she got about a meter to it, I yelled drop which she did straight away, then I called her to me which she came. I didn't expect that dog to come from one side of the oval to the other. All I am saying is if they know the dog isn't friendly towards other dogs and bites them, even on lead I reckon it should be muzzled and kids should not be walking it. All I know if Shelley wasn't friendly towards dogs and bites them outside of my yard she would be muzzled. People like this gives the staffys etc a bad reputation. From now on I think I'm going to re train SHelley when there is another dog she is to come and sit beside me till the dog passes. I will also be holding her collar just to make sure for the safety of my dog. I've seen these kids and the dog before they often let it offlead and the dog doesn't come when called. Shelley normally ingores this dog.
  5. On our walk today I came accross 3 kids ranging from 10 to 5, They were walking either a amercian staffy or pitbull hard to tell. Shelley went to run up to it till I told her drop she got pretty close to it, I then called her and she came straight back to me. This dog was pulling these 3 kids all over the place, they had no control over the dog. Then they yell out to me to keep my dogs away as there dog bites. I had complete control over my dogs, Yes Shelley did get pretty close to it but listened to me when I told her drop and come. I know I probably did the wrong thing by leaving my guys offlead, BUt I did have them under control and they listened to what I said. But what makes me angry is the fact they admitted that there dog bites other dogs, If thats the case they should have had a muzzle on the dog. But what else gets me is why the hell did the parents allow 3 young kids walk a dog aggerssive dog and one that they can't control. The only way they stoped it from pulling is 2 of the kids had to basicly sit on the dog.
  6. What I would call a backyard breeder is someone who doesn't health test the parents dogs, aren't registered, breeding the female every time she comes into season, be it purebred or crossbred. They also seem to ask for alot of money on these dogs that have no health tests etc. Who in there right mind would pay $1200 for a labrador cross poodle some shed worse then a purebred lab, where some don't shed, all labs cross poodles don't look the same, some are aggerssive, some are friendly. So in a way you don't really know what you are getting. If you want a crossbred please rescue one from the pound that needs a good home instand of supporting the backyard breeder.
  7. Hi I've been told deep heat spray you get from the chemist works very well. I haven't tryed it as my guys aren't bad chewers.
  8. I hope alfie pulls through hugs to his owner.
  9. I'm still with my purebred I will only own a crossbred if i rescued it from the pound. I would never buy a crossbred. I agree with Poodlefan how about someone starts up a crossbred exposed.
  10. I love the look of the GSP but I'm not sure if they would suit my lifestyle. Even tho I walk Shelley my golden retriever for 1 and half to 2 hours a day, She goes to obedience, But here we have no dog sports.
  11. Looks like a lovely place I wish I could but 10 hours is a long way plus I won't be able to afford it, I would love to see snow.
  12. Hi I was thinking of starting up a meet for mildura/merbein people and there furkids, but anyone is willing to come. I was thinking of meeting up at chaffey park merbein letting the dogs meet one another, have a play. Then make our way down to the river/bush where the dogs can have fun swimming, playing and have a bit of a bush walk. This park isn't fenced so if your not comfortable letting your dog offlead that is fine. Theres also a channel there for doggies that may like to swim. So if interest please throw some dates in when you will be aviable to come then will make a date when situable for everyone. Link to where this park is. Let me know if the link don't work. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=chaffey+park+merbein&fb=1&gl=au&hq=chaffey+park&hnear=0x6ac307253f06e937:0x40579a430a0a270,Merbein+VIC&cid=0,0,1082405035368947488&ll=-34.169719,142.079594&spn=0.006782,0.011523&z=16

  14. As much as I would like to take my well behaved golden retriever Shelley to a show I wouldn't cause then I couldn't go up to breeders and ask questions about there dogs. Also even tho Shelley is well behaved I still wouldn't know how she would react towards all those dogs and people it may over excite her etc. So in a way I say No the public should not be allowed to take there dog to the show. I think its fine for breeders to take there retired dogs or dogs that a company for one that they are showing. How are the breeders to know that that dog is well behaved and under control, They don't, even if the owners say it is. With all the dogs there big, medium, little, all those people etc the dog could be stressed,it could just be too much for the public dog to handle. While it may be a good socialization for them it could also be a bad socialization they get. Like someone mentioned having a dog in tow restricts what you want to do. Its not like you can tie your dog up and walk away to return hours later. I also don't like seeing people go shopping and leave there dogs in the car, We often come out a hour later to see the dogs still in the car. I would love to take Shelley everywhere with me but it is not possible, I do not like to leave her tied up and alone.
  15. moose is gorgeous, Bernese mountain dogs are so fluffy they must be alot of work with brushing them
  16. If I had a car and licence I would come but I'm afraid I can t. I know for a fact my boyfriend wouldn't drive that far.
  17. our chickens have been catching the ones outside just yesterday they got a mummy and babies lol so fun to watch them fight over the mice. Inside we have 4 cats, plus mice traps.
  18. I brought Shelley on main registration so I could of bred her etc if I wanted too, The breeder even said after I done the health tests etc she would help find the prefect stud dog for her. I've never bred a dog or did any showing, Plus to me I wouldn't know what to look for in a show dog. To me I think Shelley would have been a great show dog, but thats cause I love her and find her good looking. I got Shelley desexed at 5 months old, I would have waited longer but I couldn't keep her safe in the yard we had back then. Plus I didn't want to risk lossing Shelley during pregancy or giving birth. To say that a desexed dog is misrable is wrong. My Shelley is very happy, If she were still entire means every 6 months she would be locked up and can't go anywhere or do anything for 3 weeks, Which I know my Shelley wouldn't be happy with. Shelley loves to go out and about and explore the world. Also to say getting them desexed makes them fat and lazy is wrong too. My SHelley is on a diet as she is fat but thats my family and I's fault. Shelley is no where near lazy she is quite happy to walk, run, swim for as long as I am willing to stay out for. Shelley has got a off button when at home she will lay down and sleep if I'm not out there. If I'm out there she is straight up and ready for anything. Shelley I would consider a fairly active dog.
  19. She was swimming that day I took the pictures so was still a bit wet. I have noticed her coat seems thicker I just hope it doesn't change how much she sheds and the no to little odour she has. Hopefully since cutting her food back from 1 1/2 cups to 1 1/4 cup plus with the exercise she is getting she loses the weight. She went for a 1 and half hour walk today, a 30 minute offlead run/play at the oval on friday, Then on thursday, wednesday, tuesday and monday 2 hour offlead runing/swimming at the river and bush. So I have uped her exercise cut back a bit on the food so we will see how we go, If not she will be only getting 1 cup a day. I don't know how much food I can actually cut down too without doing any damage to Shelleys body. From a distance Shelley looks in great shape, but the closer you get you can tell she is a bit on the porky side. I feel like i'm a bad owner I not only have 1 dog overweight I have 2 overweight dogs. Then add me on top of that lol the whole 3 of us are on diets. God I feel so bad now after thinking about it.
  20. I already do NILIF. I make her sit and wait for dinner she is only allowed to go to eat when I say its ok. My dad can even joke around and say Shelley ok and she won't move till I say it. Every so often she gets this way of being stubborn and not listening. It mainly happens when I don't let her go swimming when she wants to. Normally a gentle tap on the bottom and a firm No gets her back into line. I normally would allow her to swim to her hearts content but not in horrible weather where she won't be dry by night fall. I guess in a way i'm too serious I aspect a dog to behave all the time. I normally give my dogs 2 warnings the next time they misbehave they are put back onlead.
  21. Shelley is 3 years old,Hr hearing is prefect she can hear food drop a mile away.
  22. Has anyone noticed there dogs got dumber on BH? Ever since I have been feeding BH Shelley seems to be more stubborn and not listening much I often have to tap her bottom to get her attention. Or could it be that I am giving her too much freedom as she is offlead alot?
  23. OK back from the vet, Rascal had his sitches taken out so while I was there I weighed Shelley and Rascal. Shelley now weighs 36kgs so she has lost 1kg from the last time I weighed her which was 2 weeks ago, So her food needs cutting back a bit. Rascal weighs 4.7kgs from 5kgs so his food is getting cut back too.
